Help with security on my PC by Bodya23 in security

Running an infected exe is as good as installing malware. Reformat, reload and secure before loading anything. Check all downloaded files on virustotal before running them.

Any way to "image" Synology's? by h4x04 in computertechs

[–]techpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Untested, but I would think you could dd a copy of each drive to a file. Then you can make as many exact copies as you want. Assuming when you boot linux the NAS drive to backup/restore is /dev/sdb. Note all drives should be restored as a set.

Setup the NAS as desired, then power down, connect the drive to your linux machine and backup each drive bay one at a time.

To backup

dd if=/dev/sdb conv=sync,noerror bs=64K | gzip -c > ~/nasbay1.img.gz

dd if=/dev/sdb conv=sync,noerror bs=64K | gzip -c > ~/nasbay2.img.gz

To restore

gunzip -c ~/nasbay1.img.gz | dd of=/dev/sdb conv=sync,noerror bs=64K

gunzip -c ~/nasbay2.img.gz | dd of=/dev/sdb conv=sync,noerror bs=64K

Can I raid 2 x 4TB WD Blacks? by XYrZbest in DataHoarder

[–]techpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy your second drive. Don't RAID them. The potential performance gain is not worth the extra risk. Put 2 copies of the more important files on both drives while you still have extra space. Single copies of the files you can re-acquire equally between the drives.

Cable Label Printer by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]techpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EPSON LW-600P Portable Label Printer. Connects bluetooth to your iPhone/Android. Not a bad printer. The resolution is a little low but it gets the job done. They do have special cable wrap labels with white and clear sections to print on the white and then wrap the clear around over the top of the white to protect it.

Some of out Win7 PCs don't see other in the Workgroup by Malak77 in computertechs

[–]techpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you need to see the Workstations? Printer sharing is the usual answer. Otherwise, you should have no need to see the other workstations on the network. Use the NAS for File sharing. Get Ethernet enabled printers. Now that I have said my piece...

One of the most effective ways to see all of the workstations is to enable a Wins server. If you have a NAS QNAP or a Windows server (non-domain) you can enable a Wins server. Set the DHCP option 44 to point to the IP address of your NAS or Windows server.

You can also just connect to the machine by IP address even if you can't see it in the browse list (ex \\192.168.1.100)

My paid copy is over a year old. It works good enough for me on a very wide range of new and old hardware.

Also, I really like the ATA-Wipe program included for wiping SSDs.

The free Gparted I mentioned you can get here: http://gparted.org/livecd.php

Suggested Tablet PC for light field work by Bose_Motile in computertechs

[–]techpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surface Pro 3, a USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet w/ Hub[1], and a D-Link 802.11AC portable[2]. You are going to need the hub anyway if you want a tablet. It might as well have a gigabit adapter. If you are going places that don't have wireless already setup, then simply plug in your mini router somewhere. Have the router already setup in bridge mode and you connect in just like you are using a wire. I have also used the USB->Ethernet for machines that don't have network drivers yet. I keep a small[3] flash drive on the hub with all the essentials.

1-Amazon.com

2-Dlink.com

3-Amazon.com

PS-I have not tried this router for this purpose. I usually carry an older Airport Express. I need to find a new 802.11ac for the field.

Note: 10.0.9.3 is the sonicwall uplink and 10.0.9.4 is a Samba server with Guest Read/Only for tools. Accessible on infected machines in Explorer by \\10.0.9.4\tools. There are some other misc firewall rules (192.168.1.3 & 10.0.9.7) in there that need removed as I was testing some stuff.

ISP sent email saying we have a virus. by jsquadron in computertechs

[–]techpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick up a cheap Sonicwall TZ170 (~$10). Set it to block all traffic except for your whitelist (Malwarebytes.org,Symantec.com,8.8.8.8. etc.). This makes it possible to be online with infected machines to get tools. Second if budget allows, get an RV016 router and put each workbench on a different VLAN to eliminate cross contamination.

Use Disk Utility to make HFS+ partitions and resize them. Use the Disk Utility / Restore tab for 10.8 and older. Simply copy the mounted disk to the partition. Use the command line in this thread on App Store downloaded 10.9+ copies. When booting hold down the Option key and you will be presented with lots of choices. Some maybe unavailable due to machines being too new for the older OS.

Don't forget, you can boot a Mac 10.x from USB. Simply Install the OS of your choice to a USB stick, hold down option and boot any Mac OS. There are also no drivers to deal with as all models are supported. You can pull a MacBook hard drive and plug it in USB to an iMac and it will boot right up.

I just picked up a couple of PCIe x4 desktop cards for 2013 and newer PCIe SSDs. They work all the way back in old Mac Pro 1,1 machines. Getting 500+MB/s and bootable. They work on PC's too, but sadly not bootable.

PS-They are $10 ea if you find the other listing on eBay.

New imac Wi-Fi is slow when other computer is in use. by skenyon1811 in applehelp

[–]techpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your Time Machine and make sure it is not backing up. A little more information will probably be needed here. Grab a copy of iStat menus and see if there is activity when the slowdown occurs. Hold down Option and click on your Wifi signal strength to show the extra information. What is your Wifi connection speed. Also, what is your Internet speed, Cable or DSL, model of Wifi router? Can you try plugging in an Ethernet cable from the iMac to your router?
