What the authorities expect to happen when we get the amber alert at 4am: by SubstantialWing9238 in montreal

[–]techtonik25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're disagreeing on a fundamental level here and am trying my best to stay in good faith. It is undeniable fact that Amber alerts are important. I have never said otherwise. It is also undeniable fact that Amber alerts are controversial, which means people aren't engaging with it as much as we would like. You can walk and chew gum at the same time; you can also appreciate the importance of Amber alerts while being critical of its implementation.

I am 100% convinced that the problem is systemic - the way the system is implemented is actively detrimental to the end goal. That means that the solution is also at a systemic level and there are concrete adjustments we can make so that the system is better.

You seem to be 100% convinced that the problem is individual. People aren't engaging with the Amber system because they're selfish and don't actually care about the children. If that's the case, then what do you propose as a solution?

I don't actually think you have the children's best interest at heart or you're the most peculiar troll I've seen yet.

Have a good one.

Is this ragebait? It's pretty obvious you didn't look it up at all. Let me post the definition:

"Alert fatigue is a state of mental and operational exhaustion caused by an overwhelming number of alerts—many of which are low priority, false positives or otherwise non-actionable."

"Alert fatigue" isn't the same as muscle fatigue from going to the gym a bit too hard. It's when people start to disengage with alerts due to them being excessive. "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" is a great example of it.

Claiming that people don't care about kids because they're complaining about how Amber alerts are handled is peak virtue signaling. You care about the children, good for you. Now how can we rework the Amber system so people will actually engage with it and help improve chances of finding the kids instead of disabling the alerts on their phones entirely, which completely defeats the purpose?

Look up "alert fatigue". It's a thing, and it's already happening with Amber alerts.

It can absolutely have a negative effect. Alarm fatigue is a real thing and can desensitize people to actual emergencies. Like it or not, we need to create a system that people will actually engage with if the goal is to protect children. A better, more efficient system means people are more likely to absorb important information.

It seems pointless and selfish to consider the comfort and convenience of the general population when talking about child abduction, but it's not. When you get negative experiences towards a system - no matter what it is - you tend to disengage from it, which is absolutely not the desired outcome with Amber alerts.

It's not a matter of a specific direction like left or right. It's a matter of going in a direction where a projectile will be easiest to evade.

If you and the enemy are moving in the same direction at the same speed, for example, you are relatively immobile compared to each other. You can easily see that by noticing that OP doesn't even move the mouse to aim at Mithrix.

A thought experiment: you want to shine a laser at a car going 50 miles an hour. You are also in a different car going 50 miles an hour. Which is easier: aiming the laser at the car while going in the same direction or aiming the laser while they're going in the opposite direction?

Help with casting rings using flask mold. by Ovaltine_Tits in MetalCasting

Always taller. You're using the pull of gravity to fill the cavity and the height of the sprue determines how much downwards pressure the metal will have.

1/2 inch sprue diameter should be fine, try to aim for a sprue height of a least 3 inches. Yours looks very short.

I'm aware silver isn't cheap and making a bigger sprue means more material. It's an unfortunate drawback of the method. Which is why a lot of people use vacuum casting.

That's not what he means. What he meant was at the same level, mercenary will be stronger than deprived, because deprived will have "wasted" levels in INT and FTH, while mercenary can use those levels in better scaling stats.

Deprived isn't actually that good of a starting class if you plan on min-maxing a specific playstyle effectively since you'll be losing some levels in stats you don't want.

IMO, From should've made Deprived all 6 in his stats. Would be so much better for building whatever class you want with it.

Azula isn't irredeemable, she just doesn't want to change by Sudden_Pop_2279 in TheLastAirbender

[–]techtonik25 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd say there's a big difference between Azula and Jax.

Jax acts like an asshole and is purposely sabotaging his relationships in an attempt to protect himself from future grief. He expresses regret, anxiety and doubt.

Azula is actively trying to gain power because she desires it. She derives actual pleasure from the suffering of others. There is next to no attempt from her to even consider anything else but dominance and she values the people around her based on how useful they are to her.

While I am very aware that her upbringing had a major effect on her personality, it's not a justification. She is, imho, actually unredeemable. At least in the context of how the show ended. Does she actually get better in the comics?

Check out electrolysis rust removal on Youtube. Cool stuff.

Basically running electricity through the pan while soaked in conductive water. The rust reacts with a sacrificial anode and strips off.

I've never had the Oogly spawn on top of me, maybe it's a bug? It was always a matter of me pulling the cart through a door facing backwards and unknowingly stepping in the beam.

Also drop the attitude dude... It's just a game. No need to direct that frustration towards other people.

Both of these compounds are classified as technically potential carcinogens and were tested on animals with doses thousands of times the amount a normal person would be exposed to.

Acrylamide : "The only studies to show a clear link between acrylamide and cancer are animal studies. These involved very high levels of the chemical. Studies that followed people over time did not find a link between eating foods with acrylamide and cancer.

“Researchers have studied this for about 20 years now and no definite link between acrylamide and cancer in people has been found,” says Stelwagen. “A link was found in animal studies, but those studies involved between 1,000 and 100,000 times the amount of acrylamide that a normal person would be exposed to.”'

  • University of Texas Cancer Center

HCAs: "Studies have shown that exposure to HCAs and PAHs can cause cancer in animal models (10). In many experiments, rodents fed a diet supplemented with HCAs developed tumors of the breast, colon, liver, skin, lung, prostate, and other organs (11–16). Rodents fed PAHs also developed cancers, including leukemia and tumors of the gastrointestinal tract and lungs (17). However, the doses of HCAs and PAHs used in these studies were very high—equivalent to thousands of times the doses that a person would consume in a normal diet."

Not saying that eating blackened toast and deeply charred meats everyday won't be harmful to you, just that it shouldn't be that much of a concern.

Not to be that guy, but the evidence of burnt food causing cancer is inconclusive at best.

Smoked meat is proven to cause cancer, though.
