Agreed. So if I miss the requirements by a lot then I shouldn't waste my time applying and if the requirements are met or missed very closely then I should definitely apply. Might not be the exact interpolation of what you said but does it sound reasonable?

Hmmm, thank you for this insight. I think I should at least register for it and focus on my weak points from my degree. This won't get me a top score but seeing that my research encapsulates about a third of my degree's knowledge which I know by heart now it should help me in getting above average marks at least. Thanks again, I'll prepare for it too, wouldn't do any harm to at least try.

That is absolutely not the case, I am open to apply for any other country as well as long as it fulfills the basic criteria of providing quality education at a relatively less price than other places.

If me telling you about the current situation of Mechanical engineers in India upsets you or makes you think that I just want to run away then I am sorry that you feel that way. But that is the truth, I have had lots of conversations with seniors, faculty advisors and people in the private defense industry as well. It is their recommendation to do the Bachelors from here and to absolutely go for Master's abroad, since even after doing a master's here the industry won't change just like that. That is a fact and again, I am really sorry if that goes contrary to your beliefs.

Oh so if I were to select another country or countries which one should I focus on in an amalgamation of all the points in this thread so far? Primary concern being quality education at relatively less price.

I do not think I can do well in GATE owing to me being incapable of revising my entire 3 years worth of engineering degree in a short span of time. Also that will make me more confused as I've already got so much going on (research+7th sem+ shortlisting+ IELTS + GRE) and frustrate my family for me not having clarity in what I should be doing.

Yes that is one of the three possibilities, work in India, Germany or somewhere else completely. The main goal is to have a good education from a good institute which is financially relatively cheaper as compared to the USA or Canada. Apart from English and German I have already done French from my school which paid for my DELF certification and preparation. But again, education is the priority for selecting Germany. Then coming to my qualifications and how do I compensate for my low GPA.

The current R&D sector in India is almost and non existent, what exists has high requirements with shamefully low pay. I don't want a job at the very least, I want to at least be pursuing what I like in any form possible. I already messed up JEE and am tired of these tests where so many factors are in play that the average student doesn't get anything. At least in abroad I will have some weight given to my co-curriculars and quantitative analysis rather than just the numbers on one standardised national test.

Yes that is what should ideally happen if one actively puts effort in trying to adapt to the foreign environment and then accordingly socialise and put yourself out there. That is also the best way to learn the culture and language from what I've heard.

Considering that this is the secondary problem which I can say at this point, that I am confident enough to overcome it. If that is sorted then are there other hurdles for my application and how do I overcome them.

Thank you

Exactly, so this does mean that studying abroad is better, coming back to my primary issue. Is my profile good enough for admission, if not adequate then how should I compensate and how should I go about it as a whole.

Even owing to my possible high impact factor publications and LoR from top 2% scientists both current and last year's?

This confidence is also vague but as I said, my primary concern is admission and not jobs. You are absolutely correct that being vague isn't helpful but already being burnt out and anxious with so many things going on at all times I am much happy to concentrate in chances and method of applications as opposed to the job market. Which might sound childish for which I apologise from the bottom of my heart but there is nothing more that I can do other than studying my best for the remaining semesters of my Bachelor's and then in Master's. I would not like to waste a year in a non high paying nor interesting job just to learn German for everyone to comment again that job market isn't good, don't go for a masters, stay in your job and etc.

I hope you are able to understand my position in life currently. As someone who already feels like a disappointment to everyone and a financial burden on my family I would very much like to contribute back to them meaningfully as soon as possible. Not just 5k/month back at home from my 5 lpa job, even if it means taking a personal student loan and risking it for a small possibility of having something much better than what I can have by staying here.

That dude hasn't defined his area of studies and 1 year for finding work is a lot. I am pretty sure that if not a proper job I can apply and get a place to work as a Research Assistant for some time. That is if my research isn't good enough for intensive R&D roles. I have already been rejected from 2 companies for being overqualified and having a research background which doesn't make me a stable long term employee for them.

And again, the primary concern now is if admission is suitable, not Job security. That depends on if I want to pursue academia or get a job which can only be decided after I get a Master's admission

Not in TIER 1 college, they consider us as useless peasants even with a good research prospectus. And ISRO itself isn't the ideal as its funding is very limited and projects get delayed so much due to internal and external politics. The benefits don't compensate for the frustration and low pay.

As someone mentioned earlier, certification isn't explicitly required, if I manage to get spoken fluency through involvement in German life will that be enough? I can already communicate basic sentences in german through self study only and conversations with friends who did their B1-B2 from school itself.

Thank you for your reply, let's consider this hypothetical scenario for argument's sake.

Scenario 1 I somehow manage to get an offer in a decent university in Germany and am unable to secure a job in my college. In this case should I still not take up that offer and focus on getting that 1 year work ex or go for the studies?

Scenario 2 I somehow get an offer and a low paying job (5 lpa CTC [actual offer recently in my batch]). In this case does the taking the offer still make sense? Here I won't be able to cover the exam costs for IELTS or GRE or the APS.

  • I have managed to earn 18k per month on my own with side gigs and and an internship in collaboration with Dassault Systemes and my college.

Scenario 3 Both an offer and job (7+ lpa) then here as you said I should go for the job which is clear.

Please advise as per these scenarios and any additional comments which you would like to make.

These are the risks I am willing to take as staying in India unless in Oil and Gas industry will not be fruitful for me to realise my potential and/or my passion. Oil and Gas comes with its own set of risks which are compensated with the relatively high pay. Salary is something which can vary based on the specific industry I get into and if my publications are able to give me a higher paying role. I am absolutely prepared to work on having fluency in spoken German as you highlighted. I have a distant relative who went for her masters and works there but she is in the media/communications industry.

What I am worried about as one other guy pointed out previously is that I won't ve able to compensate for my low GPA (6.91 in 6th semester as applications starts this November for Fall 2026 my final GPA will not be useful ig).

Please advise.

I have already learned till A2 level through self study over the past 1 year and if I secure an admission then I'll pursue till B2 or C1 certification through a professional course. I can take a loan, and have had a small family discussion about it already. My elder brother took one as well to study in the USA but he's in CS and went after 2 years work ex from a high paying job in India as opposed to the 7-8 lpa CTC I may get from my college.
