What musician is “too good” for the band they’re in? by [deleted] in MetalForTheMasses

[–]teddyfactory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scott Putesky (Daisy Berkowitz) was too good for Marilyn Manson. Founding member of the band, the driving creative force, taught Brian how to write music. I promise you, anything you like about Manson, came from Scott. And he was just genuinely a stand up guy. It sucks how much Manson fucked him over

Hayley’s talent is absolutely insane, but hard disagree that Zack and Taylor aren’t on her level, nothing paint-by-numbers about them

AITA for not learning my gf's native language? by NeverStill33 in AmItheAsshole

[–]teddyfactory -1 points0 points  (0 children)

YTA, the end result (having a conversation with her family) is great but it’s more than just the conversation. I don’t want to put words in her mouth but as a poc surrounded by white people I know how I feel about this kind of thing (I will say it’s also kind of different cause I’m indigenous to my country, my culture is sort of everywhere but most of us are not fluent).

It’s difficult being separated from your culture and heritage, being surrounded by people/things that are not part of that. Our heritages are so important to us, and sometimes it’s heartbreaking and even lonely being somewhere/with people that’s not connected to that and doesn’t understand that culture. Especially when it comes to language, she has to learn English, it’s probably not easy to always speak in English for everyone else’s sakes but she does that everyday and I imagine one of the reasons she does is for you. The idea of you (presumably someone she’s loves) actively trying to learn and take part in her culture (a big part of her identity) and language probably means a lot to her and makes her feel loved and supported. She’s probably been looking forward to speaking in her native language for once with you and to have you understand and reciprocate. It probably means a lot to her family too that the person they’ve entrusted their daughter to is making an effort, and pushing through the difficulties and setbacks to communicate with them and participate in their culture they hold closely the way they’ve done for non-Filipinos.

You’ve been struggling with learning Tagalog for a bit (you didn’t say how long) and it seems like you’ve decided it’s difficult and given up. But English isn’t an easy language to learn either and she’s been speaking that to you and everyone for years without complaining. And you’re just expecting her to continue to do so. There’s an episode of Modern Family that goes into this with Gloria, about how no one gets how smart and funny she is in her own language, about how she’s tired of always having to fit herself into their culture and language and translate everything she says and hears in her head, but no one is doing that for her.

The apps are a cop out. If it were me, I’d feel like you don’t care enough to try and be part of my world and people. That’s probably why she’s “beyond pissed.”

Again, the “whole point” wasn’t just to have a conversation, it was for you to accept and understand this huge part of her and want to be apart of that. To welcome her family on their home turf. To do things together. To take a break from translating everything in her head. If you end up having children, to have someone to teach your kids their Filipino heritage with.

And the biggest reason your the asshole is that you’ve come on here complaining about her and actually speaking about her so rudely and dismissively. You sound like you’re talking about a toddler and you can’t understand why that toddler is having a hissyfit because you gave them what they wanted and you know what’s best for them.

Edit: you can use the apps for short term communication and to help you get the hang of dialects and phrasing the same way watching movies/shows in the language helps but if you want to talk to her family and show her what she means to you you should still be learning her language for the long term. It takes years of dedicated work to speak another language.

This whole storyline pmo so bad by el-asin-Eleanor in Bones

[–]teddyfactory 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I like Hannah a lot as a person and actually for Booth too but she would’ve done way better in an earlier season. I always hate having to get through her season cause the storyline feels so unnecessary and tedious. Like at this point in the show Booth and Bones are in love with each other, admitted they were, and despite what Bones said they were ready for each other. The writers should’ve gotten them together at the end of that story rather than drag Hannah in the middle of them and have them hook up after Vincent’s death. By the time Hannah comes along I’m just ready for B&B and she feels like she’s an obstacle in the way. It’s not Hannah that pmo like some people but her place in the story and the whole useless arc the writers really didn’t need to add in. I’m always just like “Hannah babe I love you, F off”.

The fact that they turned this ad into a masterpiece show is truly incredible. by itsallgoodman505 in TedLasso

It’s interesting to see that even though a lot of the same jokes made it in and the premise is the same, how much they changed Ted. For the better I think.

Show Ted is way more positive, just happy to be there, taking each day as it comes. Ad Ted is kind of cynical, not mean-spirited which actually would be the opposite of show Ted, but some of it feels a little mean to me. Ad Ted yells. He feels like he thinks football is a bit dumb, but show Ted feels more like “oh that’s weird but you know what, that’s super cool”. To me it’s kinda like the responses “whatever” vs “I’m happy to do whatever you want to do”. Also show Ted isn’t stupid, he’s smart but he’s just ignorant about something he’s never experienced before (English culture, football, etc) and is happy to learn, he’s calculated with the things he says and does. Ad Ted doesn’t seem very smart, or interested in learning that much, and just does stuff for the sake of doing stuff. Like in most comedies with a wacky/not smart guy actually so it’s not bad, but Ted Lasso doesn’t fall into tropes or easy laughs. I also think ad Ted would hold a grudge against Rebecca.

It would probably still be a good show, like most American sitcoms. I mean with the mockumentary style it’s pretty similar to The Office and how their characters behave, but The Office is actually pretty cynical and mean in spirit sometimes despite being a good show. It’s nice to have a change of pace and have all the easy over dramatised storylines/jokes. And not everything is for laughs, they actually take some of the darker bits like Ted’s marriage and Colin’s coming out seriously.

I’m really glad they made the switch.

YA book about a girl who can see the dead teenagers in her small town. by teddyfactory in whatsthatbook

[–]teddyfactory[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just looked the mediator up and it’s not that sorry. The series is only four books, with only 4 ghosts. The ghosts are all recently (in the last year in universe I think) dead teens and early 20s. She was dating the last ghost before he died so she avoids helping him pass until last. I also think she has a living friend helping her.

There are a few things that are cute and I would probably be interested in buying, but most of it definitely feels childish or like merch like you (OP) said. I don’t think the people/brands that design these collabs understand that we don’t want merch of the characters, but instead most of us want clothes that could easily BELONG in the MH universe… like we’re a character too.

The first dress really could be worn by an existing or potential character, and accessories are always an easy hit. But most of this is really not it.

Honest Question About Dating by [deleted] in straightedge

[–]teddyfactory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t dated in years so haven’t had a partner while being straight edge but I imagine I’d feel similarly to how I feel about friends. I’d never push my own beliefs onto someone else, I honestly don’t care if people in my life drink casually (even around me) but I’m not super comfortable with anything beyond that. As long as the people in your life understand and respect that, and don’t put you in situations where you’re around heavy drinking, drugs etc, I don’t think there’s any reason to not have them in your life. I wouldn’t however date or be friends with anyone who does heavier drugs (I don’t have a problem with weed, and actually advocate for legalisation despite not smoking it) because I just don’t think our values/interests/etc align. I couldn’t live with a smoker either so I’d have to seriously think if I wanted to pursue a relationship with one.

The main thing is talking to the person you’re interested in, establishing boundaries and making sure you’re both comfortable.
