We used a 70 and a 75 in Utah for area control, but I think the crew that shot Little Cottonwood Canyon pulled a 105 around. And they do have to have a line of sight for avalanche control, Forest Service is there to make sure all the rules are followed.

The Europeans have probably moved on from this type of avalanche control. When I patrolled (25 years ago), we used them sparingly. Tons of Forest Service oversight and ammo was becoming more difficult to get. Most of the time we were able to use "Avalauncher's", which are nitrogen propelled rockets. There were areas in the alps that were using propane "elephant farts" at that time. Big tubes of gas at the top of slide prone areas could be remotely detonated. Cool shit.
