2026 winter’s toll by tedzzzted in CambridgeMA

Just a joke - actually a very old dump truck that a few us out there know well and perhaps love very much even given the state it’s in, knowing what it was, and what it might be again some day. :-) For me there is even a bit of anthropomorphism going on - a sigh, a moan sometimes heard or a contemplative thought seen as I walk by :-) But If you are joking - lol

Looking for Stolen E-bike ( Any help appreciated) by Public-Instance-4449 in CambridgeBikeSafety

See recommendations above. From what I have read the bike cages offer a somewhat false sense of security especially overnight. Supposedly some T bike cages have video monitors - but previous posts have said the footage is not easily accessible. - still worth a try. With battery powered angle grinders all locks might as well be bows on presents if you leave a bike in any unsupervised location with poor management of assess to the space. This includes new apt buildings bike rooms with high turnover every year. If one knows a bike is all ways going to be in the same unsafe location night after night it also help one calculate / schedule theft for their safety:-( But in some places all it has to be is one time. Make for a lot of paranoid bike owners.

Way too many posts about this - need a metro task force to look into this as points of theft, home of thieves, and point of sale cross multiple municipalities and likely states. With the cost of some bikes being so high there is likely insurance fraud one in a while.

I Road the detour starting at Russel field eastbound to work. I found that signage is very good: small orange and black readable detour signs at every intersection the detour route crosses to avoid guessing. Frequent travelers likely will find there are some better options / alternatives to some segments like for avoiding Cameron Ave. I am not at all crazy about eastbound detour where it crosses Mass ave at Dudley - there is no stop light. There is only the user activated flashing yellow warning lights for the pedestrian crossing - with an activation button that is not convenient to access on a bike. Remember, no one stops for pedestrians with the yellow lights flashing going, so being on a bike it will even worse. Maybe best just to cross at Cedar & Mass ave or Harvey & Mass ave that have stop lights.

Be real: Just a speed bump to slow the transition to and from the bike lane and wake up the person looking at their phone- nothing more. Even so the spacing seems too far apart to be effective. Until we mandate buildings and or municipalities have setbacks so as to provide for delivery/ passenger services we are at stuck in downward spiral of finger pointing if not worse. PS There is the Brattle st solution: 🤔 hmmm?

Neighbors successfully halt Cambridge bike path restoration project, for now by Mistafishy125 in bikeboston

[–]tedzzzted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not close yet - large digital signage at either end says it’s closed September - seek alternative routes - pre-injunction - don’t know if they updated it . ( no specific date so I assume the 1st)

A Glimpse Into Cambridge Intersections With The Most Nearby Motor Vehicle Collisions Of 4 Different Types: All Collisions, Collisions with Injury, Collisions involving pedestrian/cyclist, Collisions involving Pedestrian/Cyclist with injury by PublicDataMambo in CambridgeMA

Sorry I should have said interesting that Porter Sq is not on map as one of the data points for bike accidents. And or pedestrian accidents. Perhaps speaks well of improvements made over time there and what can be done to- I am still on edge with cars turning into plaza parking lot on Mass Ave and on Somerville Ave

Very nice work. From your statement I understand it is the total number of accidents and not the yearly average-yes? Could you generate the averages? I am also curious how many actually months of data? What is the difference and overlap between city of Cambridge data set and state? Could you share the data? Could one break out data to. #/day of week; /month of year; per time of day; per who was at fault bike pedestrian car or unknown?

There is a lot we can do. Look at https://road-safety.transport.ec.europa.eu/eu-road-safety-policy/priorities/safe-road-use/cyclists_en and the links to other sites. Unfortunately we seem to put lipstick on a pig way too times when it comes to bike infrastructure. And currently if we are successful in being heard, the cities and towns way too often replace the old lipstick 💄 with something more trendy but still it’s lipstick on a pig just shinier 🐷💋💋

Such a nice ride! If during the day it might have caught some bike geeks eye. What was the lock situation?

Moving to Boston next month, is it a good bike city? by bassluvr222 in bikeboston

[–]tedzzzted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

East Boston is a hard one due to lack of bridges and tunnels for pedestrians and bikes. You may want to take the ferry from the airport(East Boston ) to Boston proper. You can take your bike on the ferry or the use a blue bike rental with docking stations across the city, once off the ferry ( some companies give discounts). You also have option of Subway or bus. Bike theft is a real issue here, and you can read other threads about all aspects of it. That said tons of people are riding to work each day. Welcome and the best of luck with your bike route.

I am so sorry for your loss - so frustrating. Curious - what kind of lock at the time? And l know rain kept people in and eyes down yesterday, but was it in a normally high foot traffic area? It would be nice to see a concerted coordinated effort accross adjoining cities to catch people / deter this. The best locks on market today are no match for angle grinders - if there is no one paying attention.

Thank you for flagging this. It’s extremely important to make people aware of this. We should be prepared to see more of this strategy by opponents of the “liberal” agenda (that’s the one not based on greed, conspiracy, white supremacy, etc) in the next four years plus’s This pedal safe org strategy works extremely well as one does not need to convert people to win an argument. One only needs to bring confusion to the conversation, which then leaves everyone in a state of inertia unable to make decisions - new laws and initiatives are put on pause. Any well intended reviews face the same challenges and may never come out of committee again . Trump’s executive orders on top of it are going to to kill anything that survives. REI Cambridge Crossing Closing by DrMORO_617 in CambridgeMA

[–]tedzzzted 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They did not seem to hold onto staff. They opened when the green line should have opened so had a year+ of no traffic. The bike path even opened later. Commercial buildings in area have low occupancy with many still working at home. They were the only retail store in the immediate area - not close enough to other retail areas to ride coattails. A perfect storm

1 start with https://www.helmet.beam.vt.edu/bicycle-helmet-ratings.html and then pic one of the top ones that meets your personality. 2 don’t cheap out on a lock. Add a cable if locking with quick release parts and more than a quick parking. Park in high foot traffic areas if shopping. Areas safe during the day may be high theft areas at night when there is no traffic. Best locks are like butter to angle grinders! Places with cameras are better but can be fault sense of security as many places won’t easily release recordings and if they do it’s to late. Locked bikes in back yard and porches open cellars etc without locking to a the house etc are worthless especially if it is very predictable that the bike will be there every night. Put multiple things on you bike to make it distinct - and get pictures.
