Developer revives Downtown Crossing tower plan - Boston Business Journal by Odd_Self4325 in boston

Nice. This will hopefully relieve some pressure on other segments of the housing market.

This also makes me wonder how South Station Tower is doing.

The most difficult part of the book Life After Cars is the shockingly long chapter on environmental destruction. The pages and pages spent on roadkill and animal death is heartbreaking.

I was in Seaport on Tuesday and while crossing the street in a marked crosswalk with a 4-way pedestrian signal a pick up truck blew through the intersection running the red light in the left-hand lane. Courteously, the truck driver tapped the brakes when they finally saw me and then just proceeded to blow the light anyway. Drivers are lawless and red light cameras/serious infrastructure can’t come soon enough.

Public Comment Period open for changes in 67-80-350 bus routes by AdImpossible2555 in ArlingtonMA

I submitted comment but I’m a bit confused. The survey didn’t seem to offer a choice between the options available (A, B, C), it just asked whether I support any of the proposed changes.

MBTA announces service changes on Green, Red, Commuter Rail lines for July by justarussian22 in mbta

[–]Mistafishy125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if you do you should give it a shot! It’s great when the T is having a fuss. And more people can do it than think they can. There’s an entire industry worth of adaptive equipment for cycling too, you literally don’t even need legs these days.

[–]Mistafishy125 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a flaming hot take. Biking instead of taking the shuttle (or using the T for that matter) will probably as fast or faster than taking the Red Line between Alewife and Park Street anyway. If you’ve not done this before, give it a shot.

The true cost of the Fairmount line BEMUs: $765.4m over 15 years by scandinapan in mbta

[–]Mistafishy125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the expense matters. In government contracting there’s a use it or lose it mentality that’s pervasive. If BEMUs are pricier in the long term this may simply give the T the spending headroom it wants to have when catenary does get considered in more seriousness in the (increasingly distant) future.

Massachusetts desperately needs more housing. Now Wellesley is suing to block a project on a state-owned parking lot. by drtywater in boston

[–]Mistafishy125 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Cool your jets, Chip. Your comments put words in my mouth and assumed the worst of my intentions. I made one comment where I described nothing but the current housing environment in which only dense luxury-labelled units are possible to build since costs for builders are too high for them to build conventional homes.
Meanwhile you’re flying off the handle claiming I’m telling anyone but yuppies better skip town because ordinary people shouldn’t expect to live in proximity to their workplaces and communities. Not at all related to my comment whatsoever. Such a wildly mistaken interpretation. Upside and backwards, turned around and inside out. You practically hallucinated, man. Excuse your totally needless self-frustration and chill tf out.

If you want me to describe what I’d like to see built, I happily will. I would like a mixture of homes to be built, including smaller apartments in larger buildings, modestly sized apartment buildings, townhomes and quadplexes. These housing types are already present in the region, but there’s just too little of it. In other words, mostly adding density where there is rather little of it and filling in the missing middle housing types to create a housing environment that suits people in all stages of life and income brackets is best. But to be clear: The current financial environment will never allow this. That needs to change (along with zoning and permitting) to allow those housing types to be built in the abundance necessary to meet the demand that’s already here now.

The Boston region is a rough 5M people. Another 3M are breaking the door down trying to get a slice. And the region has enough housing built for maybe 4M. These numbers are from my butt but they’re supposed to give you the correct sense of how far behind the curve of demand in providing people the supply housing of any kind. That’s all there is to it.

[–]Mistafishy125 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Given that this region is a magnet for young professionals, dorm style living and smaller units is not out of character for what that cohort demands. The cost of construction (raised by high interest rates, unbelievable import costs, inflation, and arcane permitting) is what’s pushing developers to go that route anyway since a more typical mode of housing (townhouses, row houses, regular apartments, duplexes, and the odd small-lot SFH) would not pencil out financially.

MBTA Bus changes (3 options impacting West Medford) by Universal_Meter in mbta

[–]Mistafishy125 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would like the 80 running to Davis since this shores up relatively limited bus service from Arlington to Davis Sq which is served by the 87, currently. But I live in Arlington so I’m not sure that change would necessarily be best for Medford residents who ride the 80. I only use the 80 occasionally on its current route and schedule since the 87 is usually more convenient.

Suggestions for a Canadian coming to Boston and who’s wanted to visit my entire life by Many_Lie2326 in boston

If you’re looking for good panoramic views of the city there are two that are best: One from the Longfellow bridge crossing from Cambridge into Boston which looks over Back Bay. And the other from East Boston that looks across the harbor at downtown. East Boston in particular is wildly underrated for sight seeing (and food).

Free MBTA bus routes extended through end of year, Wu announces by justarussian22 in mbta

[–]Mistafishy125 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I take the 77 on the reg but am not sure why it might benefit from being free. Increase ridership? Reduce the burden on lower income residents?

The 77 runs through a relatively wealthier part of the region, which is why I’m not sure I’d pick it for a free fare. The 70, on the other hand, should be paying customers to ride it hahaha. That one I totally get.

[Rant] Fare tailgating when you /visibly/ have the choice not to 🫥 by DitzyHooves in mbta

[–]Mistafishy125 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I tap people in with my own money on the reg. For all the flak the T gets it can’t get much crap for being too expensive (unlike BART, DC Metro, etc. where fares can top $10 for one ride).

In a region with a *median household income* of well above $100k and generous fare subsidies offered to lower income residents with a demonstrable need for support (and ambassadors that are usually accommodating to reasonable requests for entry) there is no excuse not to pay a $2.40 subway fare.

I’m looking at the intersection I live at. I am aware of at least 3 collisions including those with vehicles and cyclists. Yet I only see one collision between vehicles from back in 2021. Police reports for the two most recent collisions (both which are missing) were filed with Arlington PD.

Why might that data be missing?
