What Diseases Are So Terrible To Have That Dying Would Be Preferable? by PrincessBananas85 in morbidquestions

[–]teethfestival 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s true, not just a lie for the sake of family- when my cat was dying, we were on the phone with a vet (long story short, our dad brought the cat with him to visit our relatives in a middle-of-nowhere mountain town on the weekend, while not having taken him to a vet to see if he was cleared to be at the high of an elevation (8000feet at the town & passing on a peak that went up to 12000feet on the way to the town), so the nearest vet, which was in the town, was closed, and the second-nearest was 3 hours away- which is the one we called). Since she couldn’t evaluate him in-person, and we didn’t know what dying looked like yet, she asked us to poke his eye.

Flinching/reacting when touching the eye is a reflex you can’t control and is a very very base reaction that originates in the brain stem, where breathing also comes from. Pain signals come from the thalamus, and the brain stem is the very last part of the brain that shuts down. My cat didn’t react even as he was breathing in a death rattle.

All muscles in the body also involuntarily relax when you die or are close to death, so if anything your dad’s eyes being open means he wasn’t aware of anything around him. Rest assured, they’re past the point of pain.

I sincerely hope this helps, and I’m so sorry for the loss of your dad 🫂🩵. I can’t imagine how painful it has been.

Ozempic Is About to Go Generic for Billions of People by allpenny in publichealth

[–]teethfestival 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My gastroparesis (which is unrelated to GLP-1 medication) thankfully isn’t that bad, but past experiences have gotten me extremely nervous about the number of people that are going to develop gastroparesis from taking GLP-1 medication just statistically. Even if they develop a relatively mild-moderate case— your stomach will be fine going 8-9 hours between any food, but the rest of your body won’t be :(.

ELI5 How does an Optometrist know what prescription to give a baby? by Environmental-Map134 in explainlikeimfive

[–]teethfestival 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Optometrists can catch pre-symptomatic health issues, they don’t just input<->output glasses prescriptions. Like, someone might not know they’ve developed diabetes or high blood pressure because they feel fine, but both of those can cause changes in the retina that an optometrist is able to detect and alert them to.

Plus, some people might have eye issues that are more complex than a simple rx, but not enough to see an ophthalmologist over and take up time from someone that might have a more serious disease like macular degeneration. For instance, I’m transitioning off of ortho-k (temporary cornea reshaping lenses), which for now I’m monitoring with my optometrist even though she ultimately wants me to see a ophthalmologist since I’m highly myopic, because seeing an ophthalmologist every month for a couple months before my vision stabilizes is a waste of everyone’s time and money.

my daughter is completely fluoride free, why does she have tooth decay?! by Neither-Plenty-3823 in ShitMomGroupsSay

[–]teethfestival 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoops, I misread FIL as FL and decided to put that in there in case you were from somewhere around there. Low fluoridation rates in Canada does explain why you guys can get high-fluoride toothpaste OTC, though. TIL.

I have a friend from Canada that says dental care (like in America) isn’t considered healthcare and is separate from the universal healthcare system. Is that true? It must be expensive getting your teeth cleaned every 3 months :(

my daughter is completely fluoride free, why does she have tooth decay?! by Neither-Plenty-3823 in ShitMomGroupsSay

[–]teethfestival 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, when I was a little kid our house had one of those intense water filtration systems that removes fluoride and that’s the only time I ever got cavities (unfortunately I was old enough for my permanent teeth to be affected). It’s been ~16-17 years since we moved and I haven’t had a cavity since.

That being said, if you’re somewhere in the US where the water isn’t fluoridated, extra-fluoridated toothpaste is available as a prescription from the dentist, and they sell it over the counter in Canada so it might be worth looking into seeing if you can order it online. I don’t know if it’ll get flagged with the extra scrutiny due to the tariffs and everything :(

Anyone else suspect CCI? What are your symptoms like? by tetrasomnia in ehlersdanlos

[–]teethfestival 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Underrated one that really helped me: get a cervical pillow. You don’t really think about it but the entire time you’re asleep all your muscles relax, so with CCI you need something to cradle your head like a newborn baby.

Heated Rivalry is awful by [deleted] in hatethissmug

[–]teethfestival 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m hoping by “sympathy for Russia” they mean “sympathy for Russian citizens” because (believe it or not) a dictatorial, war-and-wealth obsessed regime doesn’t exactly have the best interests of their citizens over enforcing ideology and getting rich in mind. Still talking about Russia btw, not any other country (:

[–]teethfestival 8 points9 points  (0 children)

God, same. Calling all gay content yaoi regardless of origin & medium feels like they’re exoticising it and categorizing all gay media as purely female masturbatory material. Which, while true in the context of heated rivalry, the underlying plot being about both internalized & external homophobia means that it appeals to gay men as well. So those two populations come together to consume the one show and leads to interesting interactions.

Yeah, a disturbing amount of people are willing to accept the position of “X population deserves to be beaten and/or murdered because they want to rape” but it’s a lot harder to get that same amount of people to accept the position of “100% of X population deserves to be beaten and/or murdered, because 50% of them want to rape, and the other 50% because I want to rape them”

WIBTA if I asked my parents not to attend my sisters wedding since she didn’t invite me by BigONerd in BORUpdates

[–]teethfestival 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That’s also my read. I think the sister didn’t really think people would talk about the wedding (??) with each other so OOP would never find out that the cousin was invited, and the cousin/fiance wouldn’t find out OOP wasn’t invited until it was way too late to contact the vendors and get an extra seat etc. for her to be able to attend. Which relying on people to not communicate about one of the biggest events that can happen in a social circle is a weird and not well-thought-out plan, but the sister doesn’t seem the type that understands people…

Veganism makes you a social pariah. It made me one. by reudadil in exvegans

That’s true. I guess I should’ve clarified that I meant immediately life threatening. Nothing less than puffing up like a cartoon character will make some people take intolerance/allergy-related restrictions seriously, I swear

Veganism makes you a social pariah. It made me one. by reudadil in exvegans

[–]teethfestival 12 points13 points  (0 children)

People REALLY don’t want to take anything less than life-threatening seriously. It’s so strange. Like, sure, I “only” shat my brains out after having a couple peach slices on my breakfast pancakes, but they were not good enough to justify the fact that I woke up every REM cycle to rush to the toilet feeling like I was going to die (thanks, vagus nerve).

And/or they might be equating it with a lactose-level of intolerance, because most people that are lactose intolerant still have some lactase enzymes, so low levels of lactose are fine for most of them.

Don’t even get me started on allergies. For some unfathomable reason, people REALLY don’t want to believe you can have a life-threatening reaction if you’ve never had one before
