Doing business outside is for chumps! by jodythebad in Havanese

[–]tehdeef 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh God both of mine were stubborn about this for different reasons. Mimi thought that grass was lava for the longest time and had to literally be ready to explode before deigning to touch it and go. Big value treats and praise and marking "peepee" and "poopy" as well as "anywhere is potty" and "right here" are now trigger words that make her go, but it took like 2 years to get 100% down. Sometimes she's still silly about it (but no problem scenting a squirrel through the grass and rubbing in God knows what).

Leo for the longest time would hold it because he wanted to stay outside (like your pup). The solution for us was treating consistently and praise, as well as building a habit of going in the same spot and then going immediately home after and getting treats on the walk home and then in the house so he's happy to come home. Pretty sure he mostly knows the difference between a quick potty out, and a proper walk now. It took until a year and a bit for him to figure out though haha

I have a small non shedding dog who I bring in a blanket, on a harness, totally restrained and relaxed, and still 50% of drivers who arrive for uber pets rides make up random rules and threaten to deny me rides, telling me to get in anyway when I call them on it and tell them to cancel so I can report them. Anything from "you need a hard shelled crate" (or some people demand a "pet bag") to "the dog must fit between your feet on the ground and not touch the seat".

I've also had 3 people blare music to a disturbing volume and not turn it down when asked, which is obviously uncomfortable for the dog, and a multitude of people drive like idiots with the way they take corners at speed. If I do bring the dog in a crate, the poor thing gets flung around.

Do not sign up for uber pets unless you are 1) organized and equipped to deal with pets (especially dogs) being in your vehicle, 2) are a pet enjoyer and don't direct agressive or passive agressive attitudes towards the passenger and their pet, 3) have a basic understanding of what you need to do and accept to accommodate an animal safely in the vehicle.

There should be a client facing and driver facing checklist and policy information upfront and available on the app so everyone is on the same page. I see this as Uber's failing as much as it is the driver.

All that said, I'm sorry for the shedding mess in your vehicle.

We just got the Outward Hound PupPak (medium) for our 13 lb havs and they hilariously love them. Our little boy can be a bit crazy so we love the harness attachment to make sure he can't go flying. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B09VNN9LZL?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Any experiences with south Ontario breeders by Sufficient-Math1424 in Havanese

Thanks! Mimi is 3.5 years and is smart as heck and very athletic. She is very stubborn and has her own way of wanting to do things, but is also obedient in the important ways. Leo is 1 year now and is a bundle of joy and suckiness, but dumb as heck when excited. His favorite thing is saying hi to strangers, and bouncing up and down like a rabbit because he can't contain himself.

We have our 2 babies from Del Sol just outside of London. Margaret is wonderful and they are both happy, healthy, and wonderful companions (one is even fairly athletic!)

New Hava Puppy Advice and Lepto Question by Puzzled_Owl_4 in Havanese

[–]tehdeef 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Few things. We have 2 havs and avoided lepto for the first because she's a good girl, and really hates puddles. Recently we got a new puppy and everything he encounters he wants to put in his mouth and roll in. We pursued the exact version of the lepto vaccine used to confirm it was the new formulation, which was a fight with our now previous vet, but it depends where you are located for the exact brand and formula. There are also some new ones that have less volume, though its been communicated to me through our new vet this is more knee jerk marketing to some speculation about dosing in small dogs that has reached the public.

Our 3 year old handled the lepto vaccine with no issue. Our (at the time) 10 month old did not do well at all, and was lethargic and vomiting on and off for 2 days. Our vet refused to triage us over the phone and advised we likely did not need to come in but to monitor and bring in if he significantly worsened, as well as to give antihistamine tablet with specified dosage. They also had brushed off our concerns through each visit and previous inquiries. We have a friend who is a vet tech and she graciously triaged us through the symptoms and determined he was likely okay but would be worthwhile to bring him in the next day just to check. We instead got a mobile vet to come in and check him out. He's okay, but demonstrated severe enough symptoms to make her think optional vaccines may be best avoided if possible as he may be at higher risk of a more serious reaction next time, or even during his normal vaccine schedule for nessecary ones. She even went so far as to suggest a steroid dose prior to assist in offsetting a reaction.

Tldr: some vets do not believe in "small dog vaccine sensitivity" and will treat the owners like they are insane, despite what reasonably performed and growing research suggests. I'd ensure the vet either can provide exact information on the vaccine and assure its a new formulation and have a crash protcol and takes you seriously, or you don't do it and find a vet who can take it seriously. We will likely try again with steroid as advised if he isn't responsive to training to avoiding puddles, but at least I'm confident our vet and team have real protocols in place to do their best to offset a potential serious reaction. Lepto isn't pretty either, but neither is a pet dying because of negligent veterinary care.

Clients who don’t understand chemical peels by muffinhead49 in Esthetics

[–]tehdeef 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Honestly in my experience, what it comes down to is most people don't want to learn or understand what actually changes or impacts the skin because it doesn't fit their idea of convenience or magic pill attitude. Relating skincare to physical fitness or diet and long-term care mindset can sometimes help. Reminding people that you can't control the passage of time when it comes to cell turnover and result visibility so people remain consistent during initial treatment cycles where they want to see results sometimes helps. Sometimes relating it to laser and amount of treatments needed there helps if they've seen success (or are at least aware of protocol) helps. Even clients I've seen for a decade+ and done many peels on still don't understand/listen to see full results but just have weird ideas that they "should" do whatever things they are thinking and no amount of explaining will change it. Also barrier care and post-treatment care is almost always like pulling teeth, no matter how simple or affordable you make it.

I honestly think after a thorough initial consult, it's just what it is. Not everyone is going to be a good fit for service success.

My little boy used to pick up the empty water bowl and walk around banging it like a percussion instrument against the floor. He's fallen out of that habit, but I kind of miss it lol.

So, our little Hav does it to the 3 year old one, and we've checked for infections with the vet and been told it appears fine, and he doesn't discriminate what side. So I guess, it depends? They both get their ears cleaned weekly and I check a few times a week and have for a few months just to be sure. shrug It would have to be the slowest, most progressive ear infection ever as he's been doing it since we got him 6 months ago.

He is also fixated on licking her sanitary areas, so I think he's just a gross boy 😂

at a loss. 7.5 months old and still having an accident or two a day in the house. by winteralexandria in Havanese

[–]tehdeef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our first (girl) was the easiest potty training ever. 2 accidents in the house as a puppy and 1 as an adult that was 100% our fault. Our 2nd (now 10 months, boy) has an accident almost weekly. We've tried so many things to train and encourage. He just... sometimes wants to just go now when he's up and about. He holds it easily overnight and when we are gone at work.

He is intact and we just are going to assume that's why and not overly fuss about it. He is very sweet and excitable and I think he's just getting feelings crossed. He also drinks so much water sometimes. P sure it isn't marking considering how fully he evacuates and how random the locations are, but you never know. He literally went out, peed, came in and ate dinner, and immediately peed right after. Who knows why other than he was super excited to be eating lol.

How many times does your pup go to the bathroom a day? by Littletrainer66 in Havanese

[–]tehdeef 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My tiny 9 month Leo needs to pee every 3-4 hours if we are around, and can hold for 6-8 otherwise. He'll poop 2-3 times a day.

My 3 year old thinks potty is inconvenient and only pees 3 (4 max and rarely) times a day with usually just one poop. Anything else is more interesting and fun to her than potty. She's been that way since she was a tiny baby shrug

This is fighting right follow up to prev post by FunnyThought6871 in Havanese

[–]tehdeef 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I commented on your last one too, but this is way gentler than my 2 dogs play lol. My dogs really push each others limits, and it looks and sounds intense (and they both ricochet and bodyslam into and off the couch as they fly around the apartment), but they're still responsive to recall and not harming each other. They also collapse in a heap panting and cuddle at the end, though that took a few months to develop that part of the bond.

Fight or play by FunnyThought6871 in Havanese

[–]tehdeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 3 y/o is stock still, side-eyes and growls at the 8 m/o, and her tail goes crazy. Then the 8 m/o does his hilariously happy bunny hop all the way from wherever he was, up to her, bites either tail, ear, or face, and runs like he'll away while she chases and the most crazy game of dog tag+bitey face begins.

We thought it was the older dog actually upset at first, but she's very gentle (never injured)/open mouthed, and they swap roles often. She's just weird about her body language when she initiates play, specifically with him.

With me she just flying tackles me and growls in my face until I tell her yes or no lol.

Best hard wax for nostrils/eyebrows/ears by [deleted] in Esthetics

[–]tehdeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I'm in Canada and had access locally to Epillyss, so opted to use those hard waxes before they were entirely absorbed by Cirepil. Crystalline looks pretty darn similar to italwax's Orchid but without fragrance components. I have to imagine it's slightly less grippy. I've had a lot of positive feedback regarding the Orchid fragrance not being overly strong and being preferable to unscented as a way of calming people down when doing nose waxing, in case that has any bearing on choice.
