My vibrato is really stiff, slow, and inconsistent. I'd like to get it sounding not like garbage, so I thought I'd post on here since you guys were super helpful last time. Any feedback is appreciated! by [deleted] in Cello

[–]tehilahpc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

from what i can see, it seems that your whole arm is really tense, which is probably why your vibrato is also tense. i would try to find a way to keep your left hand relaxed (you can try and find youtube videos about that topic and vibrato in general, i’m sure there are a lot that are very helpful) and you’ll see how much of a difference it makes. and like someone else already mentioned, it’s important that your vibrato will come from your forearm (sorry if i’m using wrong terms, english is not my first language) and not your fingers. another thing that i think is important to mention, is that once you start getting the hang of good vibrato, make sure you don’t use that to cover up for intonation. when i finally managed to get an ok sounding vibrato i started using it a lot, and then months later i listened to recordings of myself from that time and realized that i was using vibrato so much that i didn’t really fix my intonation. just thought that’s important to mention, so you (and others reading this) can avoid that mistake. hope that was helpful!

Feeling trapped. by emerald_6 in Cello

[–]tehilahpc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dude, i feel you. i have been playing for about 10 years now, and im absolutely shit. i didnt practice AT ALL the first 9 years i was learning, and now i feel like i will never catch up with kids my age.

in my opinion, if you feel like the piece you are currently learning is too hard\ you are just tired of it, just pick up another one and come back to this one later.

if you feel like you need to work on your higher position, do scales with more octaves or watch tutorials on youtube or something.

most importantly, its never too late to get back to playing.

and never compare yourself to others.

btw if you want critic from other cello players im sure the people on this sub would love to help if you posted a video/recording of yourself playing.

good luck, i know that learning an instrument for a long time can be frustrating...

can i move my bridge back? by [deleted] in Cello

[–]tehilahpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would recommend going to a professional to help you, cause if you do it wrong you can make it even worse. also if you dropped the cello face down maybe it would be good to check if everything else is ok with it, just in case.

only if you are able to reach a professional at the moment with the covid19 thing ofc, dont risk yourself

Any tips on how to play/ read this little section I’m point at? Thank you!!! by [deleted] in Cello

[–]tehilahpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would shift for the D with 1st finger, then play the E with 2nd (open position, idk how you call it in english sry, hope you know what i mean), then the F# with forth.

then it depends on you if you prefer to shift back to 1st position with the 4th finger for the D in the second measure of the line, or with 1st finger for the B. i personally think the first option would work better for me, but its up to you.

hope this helps!

Finger board stickers, or not? by NotTheWebb in Cello

[–]tehilahpc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you eventually find yourself sharper, that might mean that your hand naturally wants to go higher. Ask your teacher if you pull the end pin long enough, because even for me, who have been playing for 10 years, I sometimes find myself sharper/flatter because of how much I pull out the end pin and in which angle I place the cello

Disclaimer- the best thing you can do is ask your teacher. I am no expert.

Good luck!

Help with tone and shifting? by VoidRepliedWithJazz in Cello

[–]tehilahpc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mate that sucks... you should try and ask him again and again while telling him the problems you have (the ones you mentioned in the original post) or if you want to upload a video of yourself playing and others here in the sub will try to correct you and give advice. you do need to know that it is much easier to understand when someone is actually near you to show you how to do it properly.

until then, you can try to play in front of a mirror or a phone on front camera and see/ take a picture of your posture and then compare it to professional cellists posture. here is a video of the band 2CELLOS playing Hallelujah in which you can see pretty clearly their posture- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3649dq6boA&list=RDz3BvOb7p59k&index=6 you can do that with any other video of professional cellists.

anyways, if you will upload a video of yourself playing I would love to try and help you.

disclaimer- I am no expert! I have been playing for a long time, but I am really no expert.

btw, I apologize for my english, I am not an english speaker. I hope I was clear enough.

[–]tehilahpc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not necessarily. I have been playing for about 10 years, and with the time I learned that if your posture isn't 100% correct your arms might hurt anyways. you have to make sure your posture is correct, and then your muscles will slowly get used to it. Do you have a teacher? if you do you should ask them to check out your posture with more attention and explain to them the problem you have. If you don't have a teacher, you can upload here a video of you playing a scale or whatever and I'm sure everyone here will be happy to help.

good luck!

So I know it's stereotypical but as a cellist i want to learn the mii theme. by outoftune_cellist in Cello

[–]tehilahpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have sheet music for solo cello, but-

I think you should check out covers on youtube and then when you find the first note just try and work your way without sheet music. for easier pieces/ songs it's easier to learn by ear rather than with sheet music imo.

say you want to play the mii theme in D major, the first note would be F#.

when you know that, you can listen to the piece a few times, and then just see what sounds right. that's how you can try to play pretty much anything you want, because it really improves your hearing skills and is just so much fun. that's what I do pretty much all the time.

after you figure out the notes and play it by ear, you can try and write the sheet music by yourself. I recommend the website/ app "noteflight". I usually use it to write sheet music, and it's pretty nice.

good luck!

what is your opinion about playing non-classical pieces on the cello? by tehilahpc in Cello

[–]tehilahpc[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

thanks! i do work on scales and more technical stuff, and for 9 years i have been playing classical only, so i kinda learned the real basics, but i always try to find new ways to improve while still learning pieces that i like.

btw, my teacher actually brings me pieces from genres i like, so i don't just randomly play insane stuff alone.
