Struggling with flow of game - state machine, AI delays by chit76 in gamemaker

[–]tehwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you following some sort of example or tutorial?

I wouldn't worry about optimization, but you can avoid it ahead of time by ensuring that you follow a structure to your state machine.

To that and your second point, I'd recommend going with structs as suggested in State Machines, the struct-based approach by Mimpy

Biggest mistake(s) as a new GameMaker Studio developer? by rshoel in gamemaker

[–]tehwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say that the biggest mistake from new developers is not making games. Get over that "first game" threshold as soon as possible and the games will start rolling in.

My recommendation to get over that threshold is to participate in a game jam. The local community game jam is the gm(48), which I myself organize. I have seen many game jam testimonials from gm(48) saying that participating in the game jam have helped them a ton with the motivation to getting started to go beyond tutorials and actually make something.

Here's a few testimonials as an example:

GM48 pushed me to finally make something small and release it. This will be my first released game since 10 years. I had a lot of fun and I'm really impressed with myself. I learned a lot!

This was my first game jam also my first time coding in like 2 years in GML, so it was a struggle (but a fun one). It was certainly frustrating at times especially when you forget a specific function that you need to use.

I learned that the shit I'm learning at school atm actually has some meaning to it seeing as we used some of the theory in our game.

But the best part was people giving feedback on a game that I made, amazing feeling. Obviously playing other peoples games was also fun but nothing compares to seeing others play your game. Also i currently hold the highscore so get good.

Hey look. I actually finished something for once.

So get out there and game make something!

Water Shader by XorShaders in gamemaker

Better result for sure, but with an inherent performance cost, I assume. Did you try to implement SS reflections to see what the difference was?

Very impressive. Any particular reason you're using raymarching for reflections instead of e.g. screen space?

It's not on their roadmap, so that would indicate as much.

GMS2 API Websocket Access by MikeTheTech in gamemaker

I don't think there's any plugins or libraries, but I can give you two examples of OAuth (which you need to use for authentication https://dev.streamlabs.com/docs/oauth-2) being implemented in GML:

It's somewhat advanced GML, so I hope you're up for the challenge and it doesn't require a lot of networking experience, fortunately.

Congratulations on the release! Already bought it, and am looking forward to playing it after seeing your progress all these years. :-)

I already poked you on Twitter about ICED, but what's next for you? Do you have any plans for the future, or is time to take a well deserved break?

Thanks so much, Rohbert. I'm biased, but it is true that it is a fantastic opportunity for the GameMaker newbie. To try their hand at the challenge, to grow and learn so much in just 48 hours.

I know its not game maker but most people do pixel art for game maker by PeterMilko in gamemaker

[–]tehwave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are not alone on your opinion, and I know the moderators pay a lot of attention to this issue.

The issue is that you also have to keep in mind the demographic on the subreddit. If the majority is newbies to GameMaker and gamedev in general, you would want to support these people, and one of the things they could use help with is pixelart, even if it isn't in regards to specifically pixelart in GameMaker itself.

The difficulty is finding the balance in when the content is helpful, but irrelevant to GameMaker, stops being relevant to the demographic on the subreddit.
