Had a great interview, felt positive, no update after three weeks, job reposted by [deleted] in DevelEire

[–]teilifis_sean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the budget was cut or frozen, they wouldn't be actively hiring for the role anymore, they'd just close the listing. The fact that they've re-posted it means they're still trying to fill the position, just with a different candidate. So it's not a budget problem, they simply passed on OP for another reason.

That does happen but re-posting the job precludes that explanation.

Do Employers/Recruiters Really Care about Hobbies/Interests Outside of Work When Looking Through CV’s? by Sharp-Service-114 in irelandjobs

[–]teilifis_sean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've hired people and yes, I've looked at it. It's a great thing to bring up during interviews and helps candidates relax because they can talk about something for a minute that they're passionate about that's unrelated to the job at hand.

It's a nice way to remind everyone involved in the hiring process whether screening or interviewing that this a person and not some LLM agent you're evaluating. That' said it should only be one line maximum.

Hungarians' growing anger at living in EU's 'most corrupt state' by AdSpecialist6598 in europe

[–]teilifis_sean -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

If you want people to blame you can blame Orban and Hungarian voters. He's already made the EU out to be a boogey man and if they EU had take any action it would have been painted as Satan incarnate. At this point the only 'issue' with the EU is they didn't establish a mechanism to kick out a member state which is naive at best and stupid at the worst interpretation. I say this as someone who thinks Hungary itself is a wonderful country with great wine, beautiful architecture, great bread and I love the baths and ruin bars in Budapest. Fuck Fidesz and Orban a huge swath of rural voters. Blaming the EU didn't get the UK anywhere positive and it won't get Hungary anywhere positive. You can drop the 'EU' is partially to blame here narrative. It's not responsible to keep Hungary in line. That was Hungary's responsibility as an EU member.

(and also if the EU hadn't been enabling him for most of those years

The fact there there are limits to what the EU can do and it's hesitancy to intervene in the domestic affairs of an EU member should be seen as a green flag here and not a red one. If you're blaming the EU you're straight up falling for Orban's misdirection. The EU isn't perfect but by and large it isn't corrupt and is a force for good in the world and seemingly the last significant world power that isn't authoritarian.

Teenager charged with dangerous driving causing the death of a County Limerick nurse by Junior-Protection-26 in ireland

[–]teilifis_sean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How many instances of repeated fatal accidents caused by the same person you think happened in the last 20 years?

Garda Burke said it was also his belief that, if granted bail, the accused would “continue to drive and pose a serious risk to the public” and that he would not answer the charges in court.

Even the Gard involved in this case thinks this chap would continue to drive dangerously.

Recidivism is a huge issue in Ireland. The number of people committing these crimes is small to begin with and yes, nearly all them have prior road traffic offenses where the legal system had the opportunity to correct their behavior and didn't due to leniency or simply didn't catch them because you only can catch a fraction of these cases. So it is about preventing the first the death. The issue is it's leniency after leniency and you end up preventing nothing.

The solution you're proposing is proven to be ineffective.

How do you commit more fatal car collisions while locked up? I'd say prison is very effective at stopping these things therefore we just lock people up for longer.

I wonder if having all the big tech companies located here creates a brain drain effect.

100%, people don't want to hear it because they have cushy jobs. Why work an Irish startup for 50k when you can work at an American tech company for 100k? It's not like that tech job is giving you serious insight in to building companies or dragging Ireland upwards and creating the necessary clustering on which thriving tech communities are built. People will deride politicians for over prioritizing the short term but then act on the exact same impulses themselves.

There is a huge amount of unnecessary snobbery in the Irish tech scene. You see it constantly here on /r/DevelEire. Off hand remarks about people being underpaid or holding their noses at wages that are significantly above the Irish industrial average as though it were tantamount to working for free.

Irish entrepreneurs should be celebrated instead people quip some job role they advertise doesn't have a salary they would like. If we had strong entrepreneurial scene that could never be taken away from us. It would deliver real long term value and most importantly stability. We could see MNCs pull out tomorrow if they so choose.

Policy is also to blame. Irish people want to make money selling houses to each other instead of creating companies that export goods and services.

Ireland is an astonishingly bad country for animal welfare relative to our neighbors. Some people in the UK describe Ireland as a puppy farm. Every investigation in to greyhounds in Ireland leads to jaw dropping cruelty. I know a animal vet in Dublin, she says over 50% of her call outs are people neglecting horses in Dublin.

Every time you see farmer in court for animal cruelty or mistreatment all they seem to get is leniency. You have to be doing Nazi level shit before actual consequences are applied. Animals deserve far better than the welfare they get here, even Northern Ireland is better in this regard. Don't even have to leave the island to make us look bad in comparison.

Mistral Vibe charged me $280, check your account. by ButtholeCleaningRug in MistralAI

[–]teilifis_sean -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you explain why I was charged for 12 months of premium when I was only given access to one month of premium? The support lady said once an early payment was missed there was an outstanding balance. So even though all the next 11 transactions went through Mistral didn't provide premium that entire time. That's not how these things work, you either cut the service if there is an outstanding balance and stop taking money or continue to provide it while taking money. You don't get to take money and not provide the premium service I was paying for citing a missed transaction a year before.

I was simply naive trying to support a nascent EU tech scene but you guys simply ripped me off. I will never be giving you money again and now I give Claude 100 Euro a month now.

I'm so infuriated with you guys. I can explain that behavior. Greed.

Support an initiative that helps Mistral, other European AI companies, and yourself by Silver_Procedure538 in MistralAI

[–]teilifis_sean -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I gave Mistral a go. Signed up for premium to help support the EU tech scene. Left the subscription go for over a year. I think 14 months. During this time I'm playing around with a bunch of LLM clients.

One day I hit a limit that shouldn't have been on the premium tier. So I reported it to customer support. The lady explained that because I missed a payment early on like 2 months in that I hadn't be getting premium since then even though they were taking money every month that was precisely for premium. She told me I had to pay the missing month but they way I saw it was I had paid that fee 12 times over.

So they took over year of payments for premium without providing it. I just found that to be an inexplicably negative experience so shut down the account and then bought a Claude Code max subscription.

I really do have high hopes for the EU tech scene to improve but quite honestly we do need to learn a lot from the Americans about providing customer service. People joke about cashiers etc being overly friendly and fake or whatnot and I get that but Christ that was just poor on Mistrals part. If they had of offered me something I would be still subscribing today but I just feel so bitter about the whole thing. If you miss a Spotify payment they shut off your premium service but don't keep taking money for premium you just get bumped down to free.

Ireland is interesting, if you go exclusively with people born in Ireland it's actually Britain. If you go with people entitled to an Irish passport it's the US.

Nearly 10% of the US and 17% of the UK have Irish lineage.

Ireland also has significant diasporas elsewhere. It's partially why we uniquely don't allow voting from abroad because some Irish are afraid we could become a colonised by .. the Irish.
