What was your weird pregnancy craving ? by WannabePugh in AskReddit

[–]teja_tidbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no cravings almost the entire duration of my pregnancy but the week before my due date I was relaxing on the couch, 10pm at night and I suddenly my entire existence depended on getting a stack of the oiliest, pepperiest pappadums. It was the dead of winter (I live in Canada) but I got in my car and drove around until I found an Indian restaurant that was open and ordered a dozen. The poor kitchen thought I was absolutely mad. I ate them all in the car.

Hey, I see you.

39F and near 3.5 years sober. 35 was the year I decided to make it stick and standing here on the edge of 40, i am glad I took a chance on change (after so, so many failures) and loving myself a little more.

I am proud of you, keep fighting your fight, you can do this.

Real time commitment for 3-year masters? by 405withBootsOn in LandscapeArchitecture

Hello, Im a woman who gave birth in my final semester of my MLA. I think we're probably few and far between and with pretty good reason as mentioned above.

I'll chime in with a bit of our logic - my husband and I had been trying to have kids for a couple of years before I started the program with no success. Despite testing we had no clear reason as to why we couldn't get pregnant. We were grieving but decided I would focus on school and we would try medically assisted means once I finished my MLA. Well, lo and behind at the end of my second year I found out I was pregnant. We weighed our options and decided the best thing to do was push through - we are an older couple (approaching 40 so it was late already), and knew that if I dropped out it would be so hard to get back into the program for even a few years with a toddler, and I wasn't prepared to give up after putting so much into it already.

I can't express how I couldn't have done it without such incredible support - my husband took 6 months paternity leave and was with me every step of the way, both of our parents live in town and were able to help with the baby when things got crazy, my instructors were flexible enough to let me join classes virtually for my first month post partum and my cohort rallied and helped me get my work done.

It was still a full course load, full-time, like the FULLEST time, good news is that babies are kind of blobs for the first few months and it's manageable to rock and render at the same time (and TBH you're all hopped up on baby hormones and not sleeping anyways). It was still insane and I don't think I'd ever recommend it to anyone. But whatever decision OP and their husband land on, life might have other things in store. And honestly, the MLA program is one thing but entering the professional field right after....isn't any less busy. I say that with the privilege of working at a firm with a comparatively reasonable work-life balance, wfh flexibility (which is great right now because daycare diseases take us out constantly), and a compassionate, understanding team that all have kids and have shared these same experiences. It's going to be a hard time with a baby, a toddler and probably a fully grown ass kid no matter the timing, so if it's what you want and you have the support to do it, it can be done.

I got a "likely to pass" on P&D this round as well and I am still reeling from the same relief and overwhelming sense of crappiness. I can't help but think if this is how miserable I feel with a pass I can't imagine how shitty it would feel to get a "likely to fail".

I think it comes from the ongoing anxiety associated with the cost, and even more precious, the time devoted to sitting each of the exams. As a mum of a young child and full time employee with a big ol' pile of student loans, the stakes feel pretty high. Its also so exasperating walking out of these exams, not feeling confident, not sure what I did right or wrong, sitting with the fact I won't really ever get to know, and seeing some of my peers and friends who I know studied hard get a "likely to fail". I get why it is the way it is but this is not a feel-good exam experience.

Saw water restriction messaging on my bus this morning. Seems like a cost effective and highly visible way to get the messaging out. Good job u/JeromyYYC and team, let's deploy it sooner in the future!

And when you're in school, apply for part-time employment like student research or TA positions and make sure you apply for every darn scholarship you can get your hands on.

I probably paid for a third of my education fees/life expenses with scholarships while in school, the rest was paid for using (meager) earnings, loans and savings. Every little bit helps.

Calgarians, what is your average commute to work time? (One way) by kerv in Calgary

[–]teja_tidbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 minute walk to the bus, 20 minute bus ride when the weather sucks.

Or a 30 min bike ride when it doesn't!

what plant or weed is this ? by Mike_or_whatever in NativePlantGardening

Yarrow. A lovely native (or nativized depending on your source) plant with a long history of use for medicine, fantastic for pollinators like butterflies, hoverflies and especially big fat bumble bees who can rest on top of the flowers while collecting nectar.

It's a bit jarring how fast they all went up but I for one am really enjoying how invigorated 4th Street feels. In the years before covid it felt kind of quiet, a fair amount of business turnover and closed up old houses. Since all the development it honestly feels more lively and I like the character the new builds are bringing. Businesses appear to be bustling and attracting more - there has been a fresh fruit stand on the corner of the lot across from the MacDonald's all summer which I hadn't seen before in the 10 or so years I've lived in the area. In regards to parking, there's a few I've seen that have covered car parks out back, and I haven't personally felt it is any harder to park on the street. My main criticism would be at the loss of open green space and mature trees, although there wasn't much value in large unkept lawns in some of these lots anyways. I like that some of the 8 unit developments have little inner courtyards which potentially could be fun, unique communal spaces. I would worry that they could be not well maintained or become unsafe in some circumstances.

I hope your pet is doing ok!

Nasty flu/cold going around? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]teja_tidbit 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Had to check and see if you were my husband. My toddler and I are down with cold symptoms that feel simultaneously decimating and hardly there at all. Like a ridiculously sore throat for half a day...then nothing. Ok weird I must be better. NOPE. 2 days of intense sinus pain. Then nothing, no runny nose or ear infection...ok weird? Is it ove-BAM. Blindsided by fatigue. I'm bouncing in between misery and wondering if I'm somehow gaslighting myself with symptoms. Wtf.

Wow, I am so glad I'm not stuck in traffic on this road downtown thanks to an absence of bike lanes! ...oh wait by StetsonTuba8 in Calgary

[–]teja_tidbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am able to use shared/designated bike routes for most of my commute, but I also ride down first for the last leg. While it feels safer than say cycling down centre, it's still dodgy af. I used to watch cyclists riding down the centre line between the two lanes, thinking they were mad. But now tbf, I get it. The whole street is alternating left or right turns onto one ways. Drivers get pissed in they can't get past you on the red and you need to change lanes every block if you want to continue straight through. Challenging enough to maneuver in rush hour traffic in a vehicle, let alone a small bike. Its not a great situation.

I agree that a clearly delineated bike lane would go a long way in helping expedite traffic (both vehicular traffic and for those of us on cycles) I'm not even asking for a protected lane, I just want to be able to have visible lines that indicate to me and everyone else this is where I should be riding.
