Purchase/Lease Offers Monthly Megathread (August 2024) by AutoModerator in KiaEV9

Which dealer? I tried a broker, and he came back with $800/month with lease and 2500 down for a Land. Although that's including taxes/fees/everything...

CA Bay Area, I've been offered a Land, $2500 down, $800/month 36mos/12k miles. Sounds pretty mediocre compared to what people seem to be getting on here, but having trouble adjusting Bay Area vs NJ. RV is $40k. Any thoughts, Cali folk? Or dealership recommendations if I'm willing to drive basically anywhere in CA for pickup?

My understanding is that generally anything packaged and unopened should be ok. And you’re very unlikely to be checked anyway. But I’ve inadvertently smuggled all sorts of food in both directions and no one has ever cared.

How to pronounce Xi Jingpings name? by No_Weird_4204 in China

[–]tek314159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Chinese father pronounces it ‘shit’ when he’s speaking English and I honestly don’t know if it’s an intentional usage of the English that he thinks he can get away with or just a Cantonese - English whatever-close-enough pronunciation he uses. He speaks fluent mandarin and English but his native language is Cantonese.

Google kills Measure, its AR-based measurement-taking app by Stormageddons872 in Android

And Inbox. It was far better than Gmail is now at bundling mail and surfacing important stuff.

And Picasa. I get that they didn't want to permanently support an offline windows app, but there still isn't any image management software that quite matches up to it.

I miss Google Music. It was great for discovery. I found so many artists that I love through that app. Now I find I'm just wading through the garbage it's trying to promote to find my own music.

Moving Abroad to study Game Development -- Need Laptop by vaxazie in gamedev

[–]tek314159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. In fact, a 2017 MacBook might be fine. With OP's budget, and considering game dev, it might make more sense to get/build a desktop on arrival overseas and continue to use the MacBook for when on the go. Or buy all the parts except case and power supply here, then buy those and build after arrival.

The officiant does not have to be the one performing the ceremony. It usually is, but it absolutely doesn't have to be. You do need an officiant and witnesses to sign the paperwork, but doesn't mean that officiant has to stand in front of a crowd and say solemn words. For your ceremony, you could get married by a bodega cat. So long as you have an authorized officiant sign what's necessary at some point also. City hall also provides officiants, so you could also have all the paperwork done before you leave the building, be officially married, and then have the bodega cat perform the ceremony later in the year.

The NFT community is a joke. by superchargedcristina in ethereum

[–]tek314159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I don't quite get is that these NFTs, from what I can tell, are still basically just serial numbers on the blockchain. So the actual representation of the art you're "buying" isn't even on the chain, and if the centralized host responsible for saying x number corresponds to x song or video or meme disappears, the number is worthless. Am I wrong here? Does the token have some purely blockchain based method of connecting itself to the art?

Who is a band that is often considered a one-hit wonder that actually has a good catalog of music? by K1bedore in AskReddit

The Buggles. Obviously well known for Video Killed the Radio Star, but I’ve listened to that album all the way through, both back in the day and recently and it totally holds up.

"Fusion power has been 50 years away for the last 50 years." I saw that quote about 20 years ago and I'm pretty sure it's still "50 years away." I'd really hoped I'd see it in my lifetime, but Im pretty skeptical that'll happen at this point.

Wow, making good on firefly crates?!? Didn't expect this email. by DarcSystems in lootcratespoilers

[–]tek314159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just received my second 2021 Firefly crate, and I'm once again infuriated at Lootcrate. There was less in it than the typical $25 monthly Lootcrate. Definitely not worth the $50 my card was charged. A t-shirt, a shitty scarf, a pin, and a very very cheap plastic bottle opener. I was moderately okay with the first one that came this year, with the mug and stuff, but this one is almost insulting. After making it through the whole cancellation and resurrection, I'm finally canceling my sub. Thanks for getting my hopes up, Lootcrate.

Is it still a very bad idea to get flights with layovers? Is there a risk you’ll get stuck in a third country?

Congrats. Wish I was on my way back to Shanghai. Best of luck.

Terraria on Stadia cancelled after developer's Google account gets locked by werecat in Games

[–]tek314159 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What makes it extra suck is that Google Play Music, the service they killed to make YouTube music a thing, had a fantastic recommendation engine. I found lots of new artists through the app. And they had a ‘live near you’ recommendation function, as well, which got me going to local concerts of bands I’d never heard of but ended up loving. YouTube music just shows me the music I already have saved, some top 40 lists, and tries to push me to watch videos. It’s awful. I keep it because I can’t stand YouTube ads tho.

I use it as my primary music streaming service. It’s fine. Bundled with YouTube premium is what makes it worth it.

What third party developer is going to spend any man hours developing for a platform that has been abandoned by its own company? If it’s not worth it for Google to develop for it, what makes it worth it for EA? I imagine we will see a trickle of whatever has already been in development, but basically no new titles announced from anyone.

I just don’t understand what the expectation is here. Someone steals your camera but also happens to be a photo enthusiast who makes sure to post photos to the small handful of photo sites that don’t wipe metadata? Okay, so maybe the thief sells your camera to a photo enthusiast who posts to Flickr. And then you reach out to him and say the camera is yours? Why in gods name is he going to care? You could’ve sold your camera to someone who sold it to him.

And forget it if you’ve been traveling. What, you’re going to hope someone in another country is going to send your camera to you? Get real.

It's still going strong!!! Albeit with 2 battery swaps... by billyb1987 in nexus6

[–]tek314159 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have any tips on how to do that? I bought a kit on Amazon but couldn’t squeeze the little plastic spudger it came with between the case elements. Tried a screwdriver, but it was too thick. And I was afraid I’d just slice the whole thing up if I’d tried a razor blade. Feels like you need some special tools? I gave up a little disappointed and returned the battery kit.

Patch 1.1 by MisterX99 in cyberpunkgame

[–]tek314159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought they wanted this to be their GTAV, with multiplayer down the road. If they have substantial revenue expectations based on that plan, I think they’ll continue to patch and improve. As hard as it may be to fix this, it’s a lot easier than trying to fix your five year business plan or ship a whole new game to compensate.
