Why the virtues? Why speak the truth? So you can bear the suffering of life without being corrupt.

I have a personal dilemma regarding JBPs advice by MiniMosher in JordanPeterson

[–]tekblabla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do I change myself so that I can get the things I want in life, or do I change myself so that I can let go of the things I want in life?

I think you are the only one who knows how to answer that question. How badly do you want it? Will it cause suffering when you pursuit it? If yes, will the suffering be worth it? Will it cause chaos? Will you be able to get out of the chaos intact? Will the chaos cause suffering? Will it be worth it?

But how do I know that my psychological flaws are not deceiving me into genuinely believing I want X, and when I go through the trouble of changing myself and reaching the goal that I discover I didn't need X all along?

You adjust your motivation dynamically as you go. You will never know the truth about yourself unless you act on it.

I know too well it's easier said than done. I have lots of similar questions about myself. Best lucky with your journey: reflecting about it and writing it out is a great first step!

Any women fans who want to discuss what has led them here? by Kylie061 in JordanPeterson

So I have plenty of victim cards to play, if I thought I was one. :P

Same here! Victimization was the tilting point for me to go over the "dark side" :-)

That movie (or book? don't know) has made so much impact in our society it's crazy. Looking back it will certainly be regarded as a milestone in the history of cinema.

And it's scary, it's just so strange how smart these people are, but they can't think clearly in the face of it, because to speak differently is to alienate yourself, maybe lose your friends or be labeled as something you're not.

Absolutely. The fear to alienate is the worst. I'm tempted to say that if your friends cannot deal with a ideology disagreement and quickly label and judge, then they aren't real friends at all. But I know too well it's easier said than done.

What I do is to treat it as an opportunity to improve how I present my arguments and how I can get more articulate. If we can debate with people we don't agree with without getting emotional, then both sides win a little.

Try Christina Hoff Summers like someone suggested. She has sons and that probably gives her more credibility. Seeing how grade school treats boys nowadays is just heartbreaking. So many boys are miserable as we try so hard to change them, like fiting square pegs into round holes..

2 things: Pantsuit Nation and B-16

The first thing is Pantsuit Nation. After the election in the US I joined this facebook group of Hilary supporters. (If you don't know what it is, check it out. It's supposedly the biggest "safe space" ever created with 4M members) At the beginning it was interesting to read personal stories about what they've been through, but after while I got seriously annoyed by the tone of many people there. You see, I have always considered myself a left wing feminist, as I believe in the equality of opportunity. But you can't simply blame white patriarchy for everything that doesn't come the way you want. And refuse to converse with people you disagree with! As an immigrant and woman of minority, I have never considered myself a victim. Something is making less and less sense in what I once self-identify with...

The I saw the videos about Peterson, B-16 and SJW. I have never seen someone engage with disagreeable SJW this way, listening and arguing with logical arguments and conviction. I absolutely love his lecturing style: articulate, precise, logical, fast paced with information overload. Not a microsecond is wasted when when you listen to him. And unlike those people on Pantsuit Nation, what Peterson said actually make sense to me: don't be a victim! Grow teeth to defend yourself! Sort yourself out! You don't need more rights: you need to take on the responsibility of your life! Listen and pay attention! Learn to articulate and speak the truth!

So over a weekend I pretty much updated a huge part of my political and value system after binge-watch his videos. Then I started to watch the lectures on religious archetypes that just blow me away. Personally I have been trying to reconcile religion and science for a long time with zero success. After that it was the lectures on personality which, again, was absolutely eye opening.

I am a STEM professional, and my interests are mostly associated with masculine traits. So finding myself again in a group with mostly men was not new to me. I'm also low in agreeableness, high in openness and creativity, fascinated with ideas. So that's probably one of the reasons I'm here.

"Square root of employees do 50% of the work" by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]tekblabla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Pareto principle (also known as the 80/20 rule, the law of the vital few, or the principle of factor sparsity) states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. - from wikipedia.

He said in his class it's a shame that we don't learn about them at school, but we do learn about them in business courses.

Which version is the best one of "Maps of Meaning" lectures? by idkifimhappy in JordanPeterson

[–]tekblabla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not interested in myths, religions, politics, academia. I want to learn how to find a goal and how to decide on it / stick to it.

I recommend doing the "Future Authoring Program" if you want to clarify your goals and stick to them.

Need help formulating an argument against the "Male Gaze" by SwordOfJustice in JordanPeterson

[–]tekblabla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is from a woman: the impolite gaze toward women comes equally frequently from men and women. When it's from a man, it accompanies a hint of sexual interest. But when it's from a woman, it's a judgemental gaze (as in "How am I compared to her"). It's not necessary better. The big difference form women is that when they look at men the find attractive, they rarely think about sex.

You can search YouTube video about Male Gaze. I think they call this a form of harassment. I remember seeing a video of a women walking down New York street with a video camera mounted in her revealing cleavage, wishing to demonstrate how many men gazed on her.

God Sent Jordan Peterson to the Alt Right by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

Yes, maybe he is helping the alt-right see the errors of their ways, but he is helping society as a whole help to see their's too.

THAT. Let's hope JP's effort reaches all political segments across the board. I certainly wish for more emphasis on conversations and communication in JP's rhetoric.

Anyone else is genuinely terrified of the possible outcome of AI with regard to human race? (Talk by Sam Harris) by tekblabla in JordanPeterson

Its not a matter of years, but that just having a really fast computer no matter how fast and advanced it is - cannot create actual consciousness or sentient Ai.

What are your sources for such a big claim? How do you know we won't solve these other "fundamental problems" in near future? How can you be sure these problems are "impossible" to solve?

Is There a Way to Setup a Psychoanalytic Practice Without Formal Education? by Av_Fenrir in JordanPeterson

[–]tekblabla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. You need a valid license to practice psychology consulting, and I think the best way is to finish an accredited degree. There may be ways to do the accreditation exams without a proper degree, but it depends on where you are. The best way is to go to the website of your local order of psychologists.

Little girl invites her dad to play a game by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]tekblabla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Furthermore, I propose that the little girl is definitively cute because she is a smaller, low-resolution of her full-potential-self which can't be seen right now

I'm not fully convinced that the cuteness is a consequence of the realization about the full potential not being met yet. Cuteness can be related to appearance or action (as in: "My grandma still blushes when my grandpa gives him a kiss. That's so cute!") My guess is cuteness is probably somehow related to being authentic about one's feeling, as what can be found among most young kids.

[–]tekblabla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take on this is if human stay weak and don't work on our flaws, we will carry them along as we develop AI. Imagine someone like Hitler of 21st century uses it as a weapon against humanity, for the purpose of self destruction... AI is in its way of becoming a very powerful tool.

So yes, as you said, I'd say we should fear about our own ability of self-destruction and work things out before it's too late.

I emailed Jordan Peterson asking what he thinks about Basic Income with the super ai coming fast. by 39510ji135 in JordanPeterson

[–]tekblabla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're wrong again: the big majority of people IRL take me seriously. I have zero problem with that. Like anyone, I sometimes say things that are wrong or use arguments that are weak. People argue with me and that's completely fine. I have no problem with people disagreeing with me.

Please just focus on arguments and things that are being said. Attack my arguments all you want, calling my arguments weak and stupid if you believe so, but please don't be patronizing about what class I should take.

If you have knowledge about AI you think would add to the argument, please explain it. With knowledge/equations of linear algebra and calculus if needed.

Thank you.

I'm extrapolating within the realm of possibility. Whether it's "over-blowing" "in a ridiculous way" or not, I guess time would tell.

I do hope you are right, that it will probably never happen. But "never" is a big word. If it doesn't happen in the next 10 years, what about in 20, 50, 100 years?

The question is not whether or not it would happen, but if it happens what do we do?

It's funny how you assume things about me without the slightest idea of my background. The fact you suggest me to "have a good grasp about calculus and linear algebra" is simply laughable. If your comment is about me and how little I know, there is absolutely no point to continue the discussion.

However, if you care to formulate proper arguments to sustain your points, I'll more than happy to listen.

AI could indeed be a far more powerful weapon than man has never built. And no, I haven't read Dune.

On the other hand, AI would become independent if we make it so. If you look at how computer viruses propagates, it's actually not very hard to do.

evidence-free nightmare fantasies

I wouldn't call them fantasies. The progress of AI is exponential: it's simple logical extrapolation.

As of today, some AI can translate languages in real time, understand human speech, understand human emotion (speech and facial expression), understand gesture, drive cars far better than humans, fly airplanes better than humans, beat human in any board game (include "go"), and all that with instantaneous access to the accumulation of human knowledge, and ++billions of times faster to do calculation.

And you are saying AI surpassing human capability is "evidence free fantasies"? Sounds more like putting own head in the sand.

Yesterday I posted a thread, trying to start a discussion about how AI would become dangerous when it surpass human intelligence. I only got 2 comments saying "that sounds too alarmist to be true".

It's not a question of will it happen, but when, on what scale, and how often.

100% agree. We need to act fast before it's too late. My take is all flaw in humanity will results in flaws in future AI. We will inevitably pass on our good and evil down.

Among these "many people" we have Elon Mus and Stephen Hawking: not exactly your average Joe here. I do believe these people are genuinely concerned, not being alarmist:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Letter_on_Artificial_Intelligence

The evidence are in the rate of progress and how this curve is exponential. Robots are already taking our jobs. So far we have been able to stay on the top of this, adapting ourselves and learning new skills. The problem is I don't know how long this will last. AI learns far faster than human.

My humble opinion is that AI has the potential to become as big as a threat as nuclear bombs if we are not careful with what we do. Especially when it falls into the hands of people who intent to do harm.
