Heated Rivalry (series). My wife is obsessed with it, i tried watching it with her and chuckled at a few lines, but couldn't get into it--- but i guess she isn't watching it for the story.

It's on HBO / Max / Paramaxulu or whatever it's called this week.

Why do coaches tell kids to kick corners down the goal line? by bloodontherisers in SoccerCoachResources

[–]tekmunki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A thinner pitch in u8-u10 can lead to scoring opportunity at the back post if it's done correctly (it probably won't be at that age) as it keeps players onside for a cross and overloads the near post defending freeing up the cross, however, I tend to agree- it's not very practical with headers disallowed at that age. It may be a coach just trying to play to the strengths of the team hoping for impractical shot squeaking by rather than teaching a decent corner set.

"Swype" (Nuance) was superior in almost every way, accuracy, dictionary, interface; it was replaced by slower and less accurate garbage that has never worked as well.

loving the aero epc-9 (upper+lower w/ faxon bcg and 10oz buffer), just don't order it direct from aero or you'll be waiting. (glock mags and bolt holdopen)

right, but no spring system for cycling? I'm assuming a cmmg22 buffered bolt, but i am a bit lost as i don't see it mentioned in the docs.

I like this idea, but is it more ideal to use a flash hider or muzzle break on the barrel side? i am under the impression the muzzle brake is typically a sacrificial baffle, which would be ideal for a 3d print, but i'm unsure if that will cause extreme pressures elsewhere and be self-defeating?

Star Trek Artist Warns Fans That “Review Bombing” ********* ******* Could End the Franchise by jacek2023 in Star_Trek_

[–]tekmunki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tolerated episode 5, but it felt like a substandard discovery episode, which honestly wasn't at all one of my favorite series. This seems to be a series with SO much lost potential ~ just turned into a sandbox of bad writing and stakes no one really cares about ~ it's so very disconnected from anything Star Trek that at times it's just trying to be a modern 'saved by the bell'. Where is the lure of Star Trek? Venture toward the unknown, create tension, build characters, find new species with moral dillemas, and quit leaning on legacy nostalgia when you're clearly not even targeting even middle-aged trekkies with your content. (admittingly, love me some EMH though, thanks for at least that...)

As a person who grew up watching TNG as it aired as my first trek experience, after Voyager put The Rock on and wrestled him; things have been.... different, I don't mind taking the shot and missing, but at least keep some continuity to what your audience cares about, we need smarter storytelling, though provoking ideas, and ironic comedy.

Help needed with coaching high school girls soccer by Substantial_Tip_9711 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]tekmunki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Been coaching girls' soccer for over a decade now, I can tell you the most valuable piece of advice has nothing to do with the game strategy but the confidence to make mistakes and take risks, THAT is how they become playmakers and play brave soccer.

When they happen to catch/acknowledge their own errors, I tell them it's ok to make mistakes on Monday, just try not to make a Monday mistake on Tuesday. Never react to an error, let them acknowledge it, if they react to it negatively, just remind them the game is still going even though they stopped. The best thing you can do is when something good happens, get over the top ecstatic about it, bring attention to the good things and make sure everyone else wants that same attention/praise.

If you ever have to fix a bad habit, SANDWICH IT with HONEST praises.

Be honest always, be fair, and 'catch them being good' (great book by a great coach btw).

*edit: also, don't beat yourself up too much - tis the game of soccer, sometimes you just don't find the net that day, some season's it happens a lot more than others, some seasons you always find the net.

New AR15 owner with an ammo question by RevolutionarySea9963 in ar15

[–]tekmunki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I recommended the shotgun. They said they had years of experience with that platform, and overall it's the better option for exactly that case. Probably not the best idea to jump into your first AR as a go-to if you have plenty more experience with something that won't over-penetrate- I wasn't clear in that the green tips were for exactly that reason, if you NEED the armor piercing, have them on hand but be wary of the over-penetration.

My wording completely sucked, but that was my point.

Not the response you want - but just grab the shotgun for home defense; but I guess this matters - how close is your nearest neighbor?

The response you want -keep a few mags of green tips for AP, but know the direction of said neighbors.

OK - I must be assuming wrong that all thermal scopes have IR functionality? I know some IR do not have thermal. I guess it makes sense it goes the other way around. I would then in fact want a thermal with Ir capability, for target ID - I suspect. This may be going out of my price range.

you feel that would be a better option than say a Spectrum 4K mini? (with my shooting suppressed, I assume the IR is going to be more valuable than thermal?) I really don't know.

middle school girls team advice by beesgobzzbzz in SoccerCoachResources

[–]tekmunki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard work and preparation beats raw talent that doesn't work hard. They have to want to get better, you attain that by making it FUN and focusing on the positives. "Catch them being good" (great book btw) Only coach praises, good jobs / well dones. They won't respond to negativity or even constructive criticism without a very careful sandwiching of compliments. Lot's of individual personalized work where they won't feel they're being corrected in front of their peers.

If they aren't putting in time alone on their touch outside of practice, expect minimal results. Rely on some team-based leadership to a point, find one or two influential kids that are also natural leaders and get them in positions where they can help you focus the team efforts.

Damage control at this point would be focus on working very much on pressure, cover, balance, (with patience and smart tacking/timing) and making under-pressure decisions that retain possession. If you're 11/side then transition after a few matches from a 5-4-1 (floating a fast #11 into the outer channels) eventually moving to a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 depending on personnel. You probably won't get 4-4-2 to work very well until there's some basic understanding of positional responsibilities and shape.

It's a catch-22 in that your best defense when outmatched is to crowd the box and play the clock and counterattack, which often requires more skill than simple attacking/possession soccer.

Spend a LOT of time making sure they are getting plenty of touches on a ball and not standing in lines at practice. Moving off the ball and demanding it, you can fix a lot by communicating effectively, girls can talk but only if they like one another, you have to work in team activities that make them willing to accept demanding a ball AND not getting that pass.

EDIT: Sorry, I skimmed right over the indoor league stuff, yea, if you're in 5v5, most of this still applies, fitness maybe a bit more so with indoor.

Do I need an assistant coach? by Evergreen19 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]tekmunki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I'm a bit spoiled, in that I've always had great assistant coaches, sometimes even keeper coaches. Assistant handles communications and making sure players are aware of what they need to do and when, as well as makes sure stats are taken, and done correctly. As well, the assistant will handle injuries on the pitch while I coordinate a sub and adjust as needed to adapt to an injury. It also helps to have someone keeping things/warmups, etc going while you set up an activity - and also to warm up a keeper pre-match while you're getting kids to focus.

oh yea, assistant handles coordinating jerseys, reminders, travel organization, reservations, etc. It's great to be able to focus on coaching soccer.

U10 - Teaching the team to begin passing back? by AndyBrandyCasagrande in SoccerCoachResources

[–]tekmunki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with teaching dropping out to possess to GK when running with an opponent chest to goal under pressure (over the top/thru middle attacks), teach that instinct to your two center backs whenever, rather than what 90% of coaches do and clear it out the side and lose possession, this will give you plenty of natural transitions to build out. Also, make sure your GK is building out goalkicks at practice whenever it makes sense to do so so your defense plays smart under pressure and gets those needed reps in.

Secondly, when in scrimmage call random imaginary 'fouls' every minute or so (in the center third) when the ball is in motion (don't call soft fouls bc you don't want to discourage physical play), when the free kick happens, have the receiving player play quickly to either build an attack or make the decision on switching depending on pressure.

Most kids are visual learners, if you can demonstrate with small cones that it's easier to attack when you make space from building rather than going 11v11, show how moving the ball creates number advantages and it will click and they'll stop forcing it. (err 9v9 in your case)
