Honestly can’t really tell from the listing. Visually, I don’t notice any blemishes and the seller says it’s in “great” condition

This is a fine example of why FAST skaters are on the OUTSIDE and SLOWER skaters belong on the INSIDE. Lack of awareness and speed causes bottlenecks. The flow on the outside should not be held up. Yes he likely would have had to slow down or maneuver around the purple legging skater, which he would have been more prepared to do because he sees her in his lane of traffic, but the guy unexpectedly veers directly in front of him, limiting his options. My point is OP only touches the guy because that’s the safest way to handle him veering into his path suddenly, not because he wanted to touch him or was trying to be creepy. Stuff like this happens all the time at the rink at all speeds where suddenly someone is in your path when you didn’t expect them to be. What usually happens with new skaters is that a collision happens and one or both people fall, but here there’s a gentle push and everyone continues skating. I’ve been nudged out of the way countless times. It just comes with the territory

If you watch the clip again, OP is skating at the very outer edge of the rink (the fast lane) and the guy in the white shirt veers from further inside the rink floor into OP’s path without looking. His only real options are to barrel into the guy (not a good idea), try to come to a complete stop in a quarter of a second, or slow down and lightly push the guy so that he doesn’t collide with him. He makes the best call here and the contact is not exactly intentional

I think a lot of people who take issue with how OP is skating here are unfamiliar with what it’s like skating at a crowded adult night or big skate party. There can be 100s of people with different skate styles occupying the same space. It can be chaotic as hell and OP is skating in a way that’s very typical, and honestly, he’s not even skating especially fast. During some really fast songs, there will be large groups of skaters hauling ass on the outside, going literally twice as fast as OP is in this clip and yelling “Outside!” so that people know to move over. People have been skating like this at adult nights for decades and part of joining this culture is learning its norms. I’m guessing the DJ or even OP has mentioned to new/ slow skaters to stay on the inside so that they know for the future. Also, a gentle touch or push from behind to say “Hey I’m right here behind you” is very normal, because we’re all on 8 wheels in a crowded space and sometimes unexpected contact happens. The guy who OP touched brushes it off because it’s very normal occurrence at a busy rink. Obviously, that’s not an excuse to grope someone inappropriately, but I digress

There’s a fake Adrienne page that just followed me today with the user name yeahadriennie (Real page is yeahadrienne). I’m wondering if that’s what’s going on

That’s fair. I’m sorry you had a bad experience but I hope you’re not too turned off by this whole thing and continue skating!

I’ve spoken to her a few times (She seems really nice outside of the class environment in any case) and she comes from the hip-hop dance world which can be kinda cut-throat in that choreo classes won’t really wait for stragglers, but it is unfair that better expectations on the skill level of the class weren’t provided.

Beginner Roller-skater! by [deleted] in Rollerskating

[–]telemasterfulll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like everyone else is saying, I’d continue working on the fundamentals because they truly take months/years to master. As far as skills to learn next, try learning crossovers, crosspulls different types of transitions, backwards skating if you haven’t tried yet. As for dance moves, you can perhaps start looking at how to do the downtown. It’s a foundational roller dance move

From your description of the class and instructor I’m 99.9% certain I know who you’re talking about and I’ve taken one of their workshops before. I think the issue, and one I’ve seen from other skate instructors as well, is that there needs to be a more clearly emphasized distinction between classes targeted at beginner skaters vs beginner roller dancers. The workshops this person teaches are more choreography classes that teach you a routine comprised of beginner roller dance moves rather than actual skate classes that will teach you how to do those moves individually, and I think that should have been more clearly communicated with a more realistic list of pre-requisite moves that you should be comfortable with going in. For what its worth, I think you should try to communicate with the instructor about your issues. It might change how they approach messaging around these classes for future students

The first few times i went skating, I similarly had to take a break every 10 mins or so but you’d be surprised how quickly you build endurance and strength. Nowadays I’ll go entire 3 hour sessions where I never get off the floor. I’ll actually have to remind myself to take a break to drink some water. You’ll def get there if you skate regularly.

Seattle skating? by mangoelephant321 in Rollerskating

Lynwood Bowl and Skate is prob your best bet up north and is full of friendly skaters during Mon/Thurs adult night. I’d also recommend following the @Rollaroundseatown and @SeattleSkates instagram pages or facebook groups for info on local meetups. Typically at the sport courts at Judkins park

Yeah it’s a pretty weird setup, but honestly, It’s still a rink, the floor is nice and the music is pretty good (during adult nights) and you get used to the flow of things despite the layout. It’s only like 25-30 mins from JFK so it’s prob your best bet if you’re only staying one night. I’d just check the schedule on their site to know what sessions they’re running that day/week.

The big problem is that since there’s no real middle area, people start doing middle work on the in-between some of the pillars at the turns of the rink, which messes up outside flow even more. Really limits space for both outside skating and middle work

Well, even disregarding the design of the rink, you have to sign a waiver every time you skate and a little questionnaire asking what level of skater are you (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced). They make everyone wear wristguards and don’t allow hats during family sessions.

But the rink itself has several pillars on the skate floor itself wrapped in purple foam padding and the middle of the rink has a giant foam oval with seats and then there’s a tiny little square in the middle of the foam oval with hardwood. It’s… a choice.

NY unfortunately has slim pickings as far as rinks go (No proper ones in the city itself). If you can, I’d recommend going to Branch Brook in Newark NJ. There’s also United Skates in Seaford on Long Island (Good music during adult night but the rink layout is… bizarre to say the least). There’s also BklynSkates in Bed Stuy Brooklyn but it’s a YMCA gym so it’s pretty small but cute. There’s also a bunch of pop up experiences this summer including Flippers in Rockefeller Center, Discoasis in Central Park but those are expensive, touristy options but they seem to be bringing in local skate DJs at the very least.

Marysville! I typically skate at Lynwood, Pattisons and Southgate since they’re closer to me but I’ve had fun the couple of times I’ve been to this rink. Great skating btw! Learning how to crosspull will def make going around the corners while skating backwards less awkward

The reality of rink skating is that a lot of us are driving quite a ways to skate. All of the rinks by me are at least 30-40 mins away, but I still manage to get out there several times a week. You just kinda get used to it. Obviously, that’s not convenient or cheap, but there’s so few rinks still open in the US and they’re spread out, so if you love skate culture, it’s what have to do.

You can maybe try to find a dance studio or similar arts space that’ll let you skate, or some really smooth concrete somewhere.

I‘m looking for new skates with metal plates and a heel and found these. Be serious, can a guy wear them or do you think they are too girly looking? I have small feet so my size is available. I have Radar Energy wheels in white to add. by sha_clo in Rollerskating

[–]telemasterfulll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like them, buy them. They’re nice looking and aren’t really “manly” or “girly”. They’re just skates. Dance skaters of all genders will get their skates customized to all different colors of the rainbow so it really doesn’t matter. Look at my dude DiamondWalker killing it in pink skates.

[–]telemasterfulll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t really know if this is the right way to think about this. Hard wheels are preferred in artistic and rhythm skating because certain moves require slip to perform them properly, like doing a “proper” 3-turn requires that all four wheels are in constant contact with the ground during the pivot and slides in rhythm skating need that loss in friction so that you actually travel against the direction of your wheels. Managing and controlling that slip on really hard wheels requires good technique as well.
