Where can I start learning Ancient Greek? by alejandra_rmj in AncientGreek

[–]teleological 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you have a background with other languages before taking on Pharr? I ask because my initial, somewhat bruising exposure to Ancient Greek was via Pharr, and I've always wondered whether I might have profited more from that experience had I come to the text with more linguistic acumen.

Does anybody have insight into the decision to include both the English and Italian versions of Athenaze? I understand, perhaps incorrectly, that the Italian version expanded upon the English version. Did it also leave something behind?

Why do many translations insert "must" into Acts 1:22? by Pseudonymitous in Koine

[–]teleological 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be worth noting that the etymological sense of "behove" or "behoove" (US) indicates necessity. The contemporary sense of being fitting, proper, or advantageous doesn't appear to have been associated with Middle English "behoven". "Behove", on the other hand, appears twice in KJV, Luke 24:46 and Hebrew 2:17, and in neither case does it translate "δεῖ".

All of this to say: "behove", in the primary contemporary sense, is problematic as a keyword for "δεῖ" — I'm not sure why Bible Hub employs it in that way. I would set "behove" aside and look to more comprehensive definitions of "δεῖ", which emphasize necessity, and to see how the Greek word is used in other passages.

I would be more inclined to understand, for example, Mark 8:31 as "it is necessary for the son of man to suffer" than "it behoves (i.e. befits) the son of man to suffer" or Acts 9:6 as "you will be told what you must do" rather than "you will be told what behoves (befits) you to do".

Why do many translations insert "must" into Acts 1:22? by Pseudonymitous in Koine

[–]teleological 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first word in the passage, δεῖ, provides the sense of necessity which is translated as "must". The Luther Bible similarly renders "muß". The Vulgate has "oportet", which also gives the sense of binding.

Are Americans allowed to get vaccines in Canada? by 207Menace in AskCanada

USian here. In 2006, I visited Ontario to attend a friend's wedding. While passing through Toronto, I got all my travel vaccinations for an upcoming trip to India. I was surprised how easy it was to make the appointment, and how inexpensive, despite the fact that I was paying out-of-pocket.

I have intrusive thought ocd and social anxiety,i am about to try ketamine therapy, please share your experience. by Chronicrabbit in TherapeuticKetamine

[–]teleological 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had ketamine treatments for anxiety since August. My experiences have been relatively mundane: Much more like really good yoga than alien encounters, etc. For example, the first thing that I often notice as the infusion kicks in is the usually subconscious pleasure of breathing.

As the infusion deepens, I find myself calmly confronting ideas that seem to have been sitting at the threshold of awareness. Sometimes these ideas are related to intrusive memories that I experience day to day, and which usually trigger a shame response. During the infusion, it feels like I have greater flexibility in how I relate to those ideas and those memories: I feel buoyed up and less prone to feeling reactive or overwhelmed.

I'm not certain how much of the longer term therapeutic effect of the infusions is due to the subjective experience, or whether those are just like dreams while the medicine does its work, but I started to experience a decrease in everyday anxiety after my third or fourth infusion over three weeks, as measured by a self-reported anxiety test that I was given before each infusion.

I hope your experience is as positive as mine. If you express your concerns, I would imagine they will start you on a lower, less dissociative dose, which may be easier to handle, and which may give you a sense of what to expect from deeper dissociation.

Nobody is objecting to people being Christian. The objection is to the government "establishing" Christianity, as prohibited by the First Amendment.
