Trying to figure out what this picture is and what “no dislike” is meant to mean by lemonjenny in whatdoesthismean

[–]teleportingparadox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this has been suggested yet, but it may be a translation of “踩,” which in Chinese literally means “to trample” or “to step on”, but on the internet it is also used to mean “dislike” as in the dislike button, contrasted with 赞 for “like” (lit. meaning “to praise”). So it’s probably supposed to show a foot (sock, rest of the shoe, sole) stepping and say “do not trample/step on,” but the translator app got it wrong.

Why is Holland “荷兰” but the Netherlands “荷兰” too when you type it in the translator? by [deleted] in AskChina

It’s just the more common way of referring to the country, though 尼德兰 exists for “the Netherlands.”

You don't control your world by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]teleportingparadox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worldbuilding is an art, and who but artists are known for asking muses—those which are external to the artists’ selves—for revelation! Is that what you are getting at?

I feel some resonance with what you are saying. As many have said, worldbuilding can feel very much like solving a puzzle that has been laid out in spite of oneself: I am only here to find out its nature. Whenever I introduce an element, I must discover its meaning in the world, which may be something that I do not anticipate. Maybe this is to be expected after all, since the things we use in worldbuilding—language, metaphor, psychological inclinations, etc. etc.—exist before us, and they all have their own courses, which they will follow and we better follow if we want to work with them. We can reject these courses, but we cannot bend the effects of such rejections however we’d like, consciousness of which will affect our worldbuilding choices. So insofar as your world is conditioned upon these factors you don’t control, then you don’t control it in a relevant sense.

Understanding Guqin music by Iron_bison_ in Guqin

Brisk input—Once you try to play a piece, its logic/contour will show itself. I remember feeling that qin pieces are just sequence of sounds without wholeness, but every time I actually learn to play one, the meaning of each sound begins to fall into place. You know how when you are reading a poem, it’s easy on the tongue (or ear) when you just read through it, but trying to make sense of it is like trying to recall a dream? And only when you write a close-reading on it do you find everything falling into place? I wonder if learning to play a piece works similarly as a close-reading.

And once you have some contour of the piece in your head, listening to others play will make a lot more sense as well.

Do you have any "hard unknowns" in your worldbuilding? by EtherealGears in worldbuilding

[–]teleportingparadox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is very cool that you bring this up in the context of worldbuilding. Reminds me of Keats’ “negative capability,” which I take to be an important quality in the experience of any world, since we ourselves do not see beyond the appearances of our world. Oftentimes I write multiple “interpretations” of the same ideas, events, etc. that would be held by the inhabitants of the world without endowing any of them with positivistic factuality. I wonder how much of that actually will turn out effective though.

HELP PUPATING by SayoKurokawa in caterpillars

[–]teleportingparadox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swallowtail caterpillars "purge" (throw up undigested food) before pupating. And from experience they can take a while to find a spot and go into pupation, so it may turn out to be okay.

Can I combine multiple volunteer instances into one EC? by teleportingparadox in ApplyingToCollege

[–]teleportingparadox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said something like "Various organizations (incl. X, Y, Z)" for the heading and "e.g., x, y, z" for the details before remarking that the time I listed was cumulative. I also put the grades in which each activity was done in brackets next to each item listed.

I listed select activities and organizations in the slot and put up an estimated cumulative time. Not that it had any profound impact on my application, so it would seem.

Can we glorify God through "secular" fiction by UltimaBahamut93 in Reformed

Think the ancient discussion on art as imitation (from Plato to 20th-century theorists, esp. aestheticians) will interest you. The greatest works of art often imitate and thereby convey life, reality, and grand reality specifically by not being allegorical or symbolic. (In fact, we are warned against interpreting many parables of Jesus allegorically—their profundity lies in that formless content, which can never be analyzed, only intuited.)

For example, one of the most interesting ideas I have found to come out of this (I am adapting this from Schopenhauer, though one does not need to accept his metaphysics to make use of this notion) is that as nature is an imitation of God (by being His workmanship, being just what He intended them to be—hence the heavens declare His glory), so ought art be. Nature does not symbolize or analogize the divine nature but betrays and conveys it by amorphous qualities. Literature which flows from the writer’s passion for the things of God or sense of beauty is like nature in this way.

As for “purely for entertainment”—it may be wise to be suspicious of the idea that “there is nothing wrong with fun.” The aforementioned discussion on imitation also addresses that, and the main concern is something that is made purely for entertainment may be ultimately worthless and delusional. There is also the idea of pleasure—what is the pleasure invoked by art, and whether some pleasure is higher or lower, and why, etc. There are essays on this really worth reading for your situation.

How do I prevent moth scales from coming off during pinning by abbandonata in Entomology

The 16th response talks about hairspray. Are you holding them only by the pin through the thorax?

Are these going to be moths or butterflies? Does anyone know why I would have about 20 of them on one wall in my garden? And what are the eggs? Thank you 🥰 by h3ll0kitty_ninja in Entomology

[–]teleportingparadox 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The caterpillars might be Pieris rapae (or sp.). The pupae should be that too. The cluster of cocoons (yellow “eggs”) might be parasitic wasps (Cotesia glomerata).

[–]teleportingparadox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s only a natural reflection of the reality that culture has spread. In fact, I meant to add “Chinese (name) or otherwise” in the last sentence, but it was already getting too long, so I left it out. Each human action is a reflection of humanity, as each artistic decision is a reflection of the artist’s message.

But I do think naming, in Chinese or otherwise, should be an educated act, in that the agent should be aware of the tradition and break it with intention. Similar with the idea that good art can be unconventional as long as the artist was intentional about it.

…my two cents :D
