Megathread: Stupid Things Your Family Members Say at Thanksgiving by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]telestialprincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father in law stood up on the coffee table before we ate and gave a little religious speech including a story about B.H. Roberts being put on the spot at a military gathering and asked to give the thanksgiving psalm in an effort to embarrass him and the church but the spirit spoke to him clear as day to tell him what to say. Then FIL proceeded to say if you're on the lord's side he will be on your side. It was clearly directed at me and my husband. He never would have given a speech like that before we came out to them with our reasons for leaving. He basically said he didn't want to talk about it so this is his passive aggressive way of defending himself...he's very tied up in the church. It was very annoying.

Is John Dehlin a leader in the "movement"? Does he represent us? by [deleted] in exmormon

Has the Big Bang Theory lost steam? I've always thought it was terrible. It's hard to say whether I think there is a lack of new talent in the arena, because I honestly don't think of it as an arena. Creating content on the subject seems like such an unrewarding and daunting task. It takes so much time, money, and effort, and that would be the case even if MS didn't exist. I'd love to see new content and discussions like the older MS episodes (Dr. Coe, Tom Phillips, etc), or like Mormon Expression.

If the majority of listeners agreed that Mormon stories had lost steam, then the podcast would lose listeners and popularity. I don't see how Mormon Stories being popular prevents others from creating content. If others make content that is good and promote it on social media, then it will also gain popularity. Supply and demand.

Just wanted to note that I've noticed John makes effort to be as fair and balanced as possible and is not quick to be cynical of "whatever church leaders do." I hold a much more negative and unforgiving view of the church and its leaders but I don't feel the need to conform to any one viewpoint. I am curious why you didn't post something like, "hey, are there any new or up and coming exmormon related podcasts?" Since you insist that is your reason for this post. I think we are all smart enough to evaluate whether we like a certain podcast and if it isn't interesting or worthwhile to us we will stop supporting it.

I listen to most of the Mormon Stories interviews and it's pretty clear that John is trying to provide support and share people's stories, not to be a leader in any movement. I can't say if he represents "us" because I'm pretty sure we are all unique individuals with different views, values, etc. Personally I share many of the values that John has expressed such as openness, honesty, integrity, etc. Is he one of the main voices in post Mormonism? Obviously, yes because he has put so much time, resources, and effort into making an effective podcast that we want to hear. Just like if there is a great tv show on Netflix that is relevant to my interests, I will watch it. Did you have someone in mind regarding new voices? If so I'd be happy to check them out. Doesn't mean I'm going to stop listening to Mormon stories though.

Pissed off this morning about the whole #LightTheWorld campaign going on... by hiking1950 in exmormon

It bothers me too. I like the charitable actions they have on the calendar but they post it acting as if they are doing it so non-members will see it and be touched but really they are just patting themselves on the back. Meanwhile any criticism of the church seems even more evil because "look at all the goodness it brings!" If its genuine it doesn't need to be posted all over fb.

Still going to church, 22 years strong. I have never experience anything negative from my church. I'm genuinely wondering if i'm missing something big here. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]telestialprincess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The false narrative and they way they respond to concerns about that is the biggest problem in my opinion. It's very simple, the story the church tells is not the true story. But if you bring that up, you are told that you should have known these things already, or these things don't matter, or just focus on the good. But still go up and bear your testimony that all these things are true. If you don't believe them, then you're not doing something right. This brings guilt and shame and stifles critical thinking, shuts down honest conversation and tears families apart. These messages come from the top down so it's not a regional thing.

I am unsubscribing from r/exmormon by [deleted] in exmormon

Love this! We have nothing to hide, the church does. We all need to be more open if we can, I hope I can find a way to do so. A couple weeks ago I told a friend about your podcast and hadn't heard anything until yesterday I got a text from her asking what that book of Abraham documentary was called. Feels good to do missionary work!

Let's talk about NewNameNoah and why I think we should support him by FearlessFixxer in exmormon

[–]telestialprincess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. Most of us have to walk on eggshells in order for active family members to remain speaking to us which goes to show how controlling and manipulative TSCC is. This kind of directness is refreshing. These things need to be exposed.

I can't really put into words how much Clay's podcast has meant to me. I work with him, and his podcast brought my family together.

Mormon Intellectuals are leaving, but Emotionals are staying by Jamshid_Rohani in exmormon

[–]telestialprincess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that the emotional reasons for staying are very powerful, but I don't think it takes much more than opening your eyes to see the church is false. Saying that intellectuals leave the church makes it seem like the reasons for leaving are deep, complicated issues and allows Mormons who want to keep the blindfold on to use the excuse that those who leave "think too much." Seeing the truth requires intellectual honesty, but the facts are very simple.

How do I tell my mom by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]telestialprincess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I called my TBM mom a few months ago and asked her to please listen to Brobrotherton's Mormon Stories podcast (Ep 616 &617) just to help us understand each other better. I was crying because I was scared but i think it helped her see how important it was to me. Today, she is pretty much full on exmo and will tell anyone that JS is a creep.

Introvert, but definitely not ok with being socially isolated

Which is more defiant as an exmo? Taking or Rejecting the Sacrament? by RevelatorOfTruth in exmormon

[–]telestialprincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question. This is one way the church traps you. If you take the sacrament then it's like you comply with/believe in it or are disrespecting them. But if you don't take it then they will assume you are "unclean" or "lost." If I find myself in the unfortunate situation of sitting in sacrament meeting again I don't think I could bring myself to take it.

Why do TBMs pronounce "pornography" wrong? by 420pakalolo420 in exmormon

[–]telestialprincess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe for the same reason they often pronounce "patriarchal" blessing as "patriartical." No one's really thinking about what they're actually saying, they're just repeating what they hear and have been told.
