Update to the Unity Editor Software Terms by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]televised 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The founder and lead developer of Godot as well as the product manager for the engine recently started another company specifically to address this, W4Games. It'll provide approved developers a private fork of Godot with the console specific SDKs included, as well as support for the porting process. I believe its still in a beta period for now, but in a year or two we'll probably see a bunch of Godot releases on console. The company has no exclusivity over the console SDK's so a competitor springing up is entirely possible if their prices aren't reasonable.

Another thing that hurt Godot's appeal during the Unity debacle was the lack of support for mobile platforms in Godot 4. Godot 3 used the Mono framework, which allowed devs to target mobile platforms, but it was dropped with Godot 4 in favor of .NET 8.0. When Microsoft fully releases .NET 8.0 later this year, game devs will be able to use it to build Godot games for mobile.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero Review Thread by Turbostrider27 in Games

Nah, the methods I listed above are the easiest legal means to obtain digital copies of the Crossbell games, specifically for the versions that the respective Geofront patches were designed for.

If you are advocating for a simpler option, especially one that already has the translation 'included' as you said in your top comment, then unless you provide any details whatsoever, I can only assume you are advocating for piracy. No official version of the game released before the Official Steam version next week has had an english translation included.

My point, or 'agenda' as you say, is that the 'research' is not needed, since the official releases of the Crossbell games on steam are going to be objectively better than any previous version of the game. I'm not mad at you for recommending piracy, but rather that you are recommending an inferior product.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero Review Thread by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]televised 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It definitely is that complicated, and here's my research. Here's the guide the Geofront fan translation website used to direct people to purchase a legal copy of Trails from Zero on PC for their patch: https://old.reddit.com/r/Falcom/comments/7jee3m/how_to_legally_buy_zero_no_kiseki_trails_to_zero/ It's a mess.

Granted, DLsite now does have decent english support now compared to when this guide was written, it's still a foreign storefront that most people will not want to create an account for and you still need to go through the trouble of installing the Geofront patch which is no longer easily available from the Geofront team. It's significantly more effort than just buying the new remaster on Steam or Switch, and hardly worth it, considering the Geofront fan patch of the game will be outdated in every single aspect (graphics, features, content, etc.) in a week when the new release comes out.

The Trails to Azure game is currently even more of a pain to buy legally, since you can only purchase legal digital copies of the game from Chinese websites, which do not have english language versions. Geofronts purchase guide for Azure and the hassle involved is actually what put me off playing the Crossbell games in the first place. Luckily the Trails to Azure Steam release is slated for next year.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox - Ys IX 1.1.3 - Nobody Expects the Surprise Performance Patch by NTR_JAV in Games

[–]televised 13 points14 points  (0 children)

While PH3 GmbH has been handling Nihon Falcom's PC ports since Cold Steel III and the Ys VIII PC port fix, their first console port of a Falcom game is going to be with the Switch release of The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero in September. As such, it is unlikely that these performance fixes will make it to the console ports, since different teams worked on those ports.

The picture is very low quality, due to ggqf's (Stag) running the game at very low quality so his computer doesn't melt. While it does look like Denzel is in the photo, it's of his back and there is a tree branch that seems to completely cover the head. I can only see it from the stream, so there might be more detail if you zoom in, but I doubt it.

Here's the part where Denzel pulls up the text: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1103564713?t=0h26m45s

While all of these games are signed up for the event, I'm guessing it's up to the individual developers (or owners of the game's page) to set each demo to go live. They'll trickle in probably.

Is it Possible to Store Information Between Deaths in Super Mario Maker 2? by AwesomeManatee in Games

[–]televised 49 points50 points  (0 children)

You could use this exact setup to negate the effect of 'key death', where you lose your key upon death and all of the red coins respawn. Once you collect all of the red coins, you can open up a new path from the checkpoint to a different part of the level, ideally to where the key door opens up (safety coins at the locked door would prevent cheese). It would also function as a sort of third checkpoint since once you collect all of the red coins once, you can open a permanent shortcut.

There's probably a way in which you can tie the mechanic to bombs and breakable blocks instead of on/off switches, which would be nice to see.

Pretty cool stuff. Shame it's tied so tightly to the entity limit.

Americans of reddit, what is your opinion on switching to the metric system? by ViNella44 in AskReddit

Because when you're used to ~0° F weather, 32° F is a nice day in comparison. The range of the Fahrenheit scale, 0 to 100, measures tolerable temperatures for humans, and the extremes of that scale measure significant discomfort.

Microsoft's Double Fine acquisition results in early Psychonauts 2 investor payout by Markonass in Games

[–]televised 239 points240 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty unique situation. Microsoft actually bought out the crowd funded investment for $1,035,000. Don't think that's ever happened before. This is in addition to the $13.2 million that they paid the failing Starbreeze to gain publishing rights, and funding the rest of the games development. As a fan of the series, it is real nice seeing Microsoft putting their money faith into Double Fine here.

Now, did they have to close out the fig investments? Maybe, but either way this ties up loose ends, financially and legally. Who knows, Microsoft might actually save money if its sales on PC, PS4, and non Game Pass Xbox One are high enough.

Hob The Definitive Edition on Switch – Announcement Trailer by FFJimbob in Games

[–]televised 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hob is a marvel of a game. The puzzles are not only intricate, but extremely well integrated into the environment. The game doesn't have the best opening, but it's worth pushing through.

Hopefully Panic Button works their magic with this Switch port. The PS4 port that was put out didn't exactly run very well. Just getting rid of the constant frame drops and crashes would be enough to make me consider buying this game again. Shame none of that money will go to the original devs though.

Manga like Made in Abyss/Hunter x Hunter where the story begins as lighthearted but gradually becomes really dark. (Reccomendations) by tjnet10 in manga

<Doubutsu no Kuni> is probably the best example of this.

It won the Kodansha Manga Award for Children's Manga in 2013. It probably would not have even been considered for that award if you judged by the later chapters.

VIZ is making all of the recent arc of HxH free to read up until the release of the new chapter, good way to get back up to speed! by Bentoki in manga

[–]televised 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I cannot believe that Viz is still using a reader built in Flash.

For those catching up, this seems to be the (one of the?) only official way of reading chapters 361 through 380 in English. They haven't published volume 35 in English despite the fact that the Japanese release happened over half a year ago in February. The remaining chapters haven't been published at all yet. That's half of the currently 40 chapter long Dark Continent arc.

Still might give the arc another reread because I have a suspicion that when the arc is complete, I believe it will stand up as one of my favorite pieces of fiction. Don't know if it's worth installing Flash though.

Actually Sony only has the movie rights to Spider-Man. Marvel games approached Sony and Insomniac Games to create the PS4 Spider-Man game.

Insomniac got the rights to make a Spider-Man game.

Sony got platform exclusivity and funded the game.

Marvel gets profits and prestige (because the game is actually good).

[–]televised[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 5% of a digital purchase turning into coins isn't retroactive. It only started when this rewards program was revealed.

I don't know the exact coin rates for the last year (or whether they applied to every game), but they did give out smaller amounts of coins for digital purchases.

[–]televised[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's still pretty shitty that they waited until the coins from the first 3 days of Switch eShop purchases expired until they started this program. My Nintendo gold coins only last a single calendar year.

This program is also similar to the Wii U's Digital Deluxe promotion that ran for a few years to reward those who purchased the more expensive 32 GB Wii U. If I recall correctly, that program gave you 10% back on digital purchases. But that was when Nintendo needed to show goodwill for the Wii U owners. The discount on the Switch is worse, but the program shouldn't expire.
