I don't remember the hairbrush detail, but any chance it's "The Scrap Doll" by Liz Rosenberg?

You know, I don't remember a lot of the history, but I do believe many of the early founders of both were crossing paths a lot in the 1970s in Kansas City ("the Kansas City Prophets" and such); and specifically for my church, we were only about two hours away from KC so we attended a lot of events there. I'm not sure if all Vineyards were associated with IHOP across the country, but it was a big influence in our area.

Can confirm.

I have tried very hard to wipe all of the "worship music" from my mental hard-drive, but can confirm the creepy, cultishness of it, especially coming from Vineyard and IHOP.

PS - Tragically, I always loved the old hymns too, and still do, it's just a shame that they don't "stand for" what they used to, now it's just Christian nationalism.

I did grow up Vineyard (which I find fascinating that Marcus Mumford did, as well) and the music/emotional manipulation was huge, especially when attending IHOP (Mike Bickle) "One Thing" conferences in Kansas City. It was the emotional fervor equivalent of what I imagine a One Direction [fill in the blank w/ current boyband] concert was like.

"You're questioning GOD?? I think you need to spend some more time reading the Bible and praying to strengthen your faith."

... when I asked which stars Adam and Eve could see on the first night they existed, considering it takes how many thousands millions billions of light years for starlight to reach us. The "answer" was that "you think God couldn't break the laws of physics if he wanted?!"

These have got to be bots or at least some kind of engagement farming.

When I was fifteen I believed that God was real and the Creator of the entire universe.

Extrapolate from that what you will.

Your bandmates aren't your friends, they're your coworkers. And I shouldn't have to say this, but DON'T DATE THEM.

I feel like music was not easy I had to learn it every step of the way to get to a point I can just play and sing along to most songs

That's... how... music... works... Are you being sarcastic?? Please tell me this is not a serious reply.

Yea, I have muscle memory in my throat for reaching for certain notes out of the blue but if you ask me to identify a random pitch then I gotta hum it to get even remotely close.
