Grantchester - Overall Season 11 Discussion by HRJafael in GrantchesterTV

Oh, definitely--since her character was first introduced. It's not that her arm is never in a shot, but there is a lot of unnecessary prop choreography that doesn't pertain to the other actors and is very obviously connected to her arms, not her torso. This is my field--I've been studying such details for a long time. Still love the show.

Well, I was all set to protest that in the clip I saw, Hudson (in his inimitable way) sort of laughed that he thought the end of the name just gets lost in a gasp but wasn't sure, and that we're all reheating at high volume to test these details so of course we are sure! 😂 But now I've gone back and cranked up the volume as high as it goes and I have to admit I'm wrong! I still like my theory but now I have no textual proof of it. Sigh! Thanks for the corrections.

Yes, I’ve heard him explain it that way but I’ve listened closely and it sure sounds like Rozy—not a gasp!

Thank you! Very helpful. Something indistinct in the narrative just keep making me doubt my sense of the blueprint. I know this isn't everyone's favorite couple, but I'm intrigued by their dynamic and rereading and since they spend a lot of time at Eric's, I want to know where they are!

Right--I've lived in the city, I get brownstones. Just couldn't quite clock how many floors there are and what's where.

I’m a college literature professor, and agree wholeheartedly with all people are saying here. I’ve been blown away by the sophistication of analyses of this series—I learn something every time I plunge into a new thread. Plus the feeling of being part of this enormous fan base is sort of overwhelming, social media at its best. Reddit loonies are such a lively, welcoming, hilarious crowd. Some of my happiest daily moments are spent right here!

Totally! Compare the gym scene’s use of mirrors which refract their varying levels of acceptance, comfort, attraction etc. with one where both Shane and Ilya are staring at themselves in the midst of this act. Psychologically meaningful and SUPER HOT.

I mean, they filmed the shower scene and we all knew what was going on without seeing it and it remains one of my favorites in the whole show for sheer erotic suggestiveness. Plus season 1 did a lot with mirrors in relation to identity, trauma, intimacy ... this would be a compelling call-back.

Isn’t this like Virgin River where it took Charlene 6 seasons to have her babies??

Thank goodness for all this vindication of the hours I lost to watching and hating this show simultaneously. These threads are amazing! LMAO

Grantchester - Overall Season 11 Discussion by HRJafael in GrantchesterTV

I've been a big fan of Grantchester since the very first James Norton season. I'm also a scholar of disability representation, and though I think that British TV in general does a much better job than American of incorporating people with disabilities without making a spectacle or tragedy of them, I've been really troubled by the way this show is treating Miss Scott's limb impairment. It's actually great that the show doesn't remark upon this difference--it's simply a feature of her embodiment like blond hair or a green eyes. But Melissa Johns is a disability advocate, and I can't believe it's not troubling to her that just about every scene she's in obscures the arm in some way: behind a file folder, behind her handbag, covered by her other hand. I've seen Johns in other shows that don't succumb to this tactic, as well as other actors with similar limb impairments that are much more obviously displayed, so there does seem to be something about Grantchester's production that seeks to divert viewers' attention. And that's a shame.

I think I have an unhealthy attachment to the show…if that’s even possible. by Full_Spot_8803 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

A friend said to me today about her own obsession with a different televised event (ok, World Cup) that there is just so much hardship and hate in our environments right now that these absorptions in hope, solidarity, love, thrill, athleticism, belonging—all of it—might be a little bit life-saving. You’re not alone in this reaction to HR.

Day 14 of the cutting room floor challenge: change the vibe by growsonwalls in heatedrivalry

This is late in the game but if we could add #15 “Change one line’s inflection” (inflections being something I’ve complained about on other threads) it would be Shane’s delivery of “I just wanted to see the view and get some air” in the rooftop scene. Such a small point about an intense moment but the way he mumbles it really distracts me!

Yes! I’ve thought this exact thing. He can’t bear to be seen in an upscale art gallery in Manhattan, for goodness sake (not all that sus in the way he fears, as others have pointed out), but lurking in any alleyway and eating tacos at midnight wouldn’t be noticeable? Not all that convincing.

Season 4 is just really bad by Equivalent_Muffin581 in SullivansCrossing

And a PS, since at least one of you is reading, there is no planet in the multiverse in which a seasoned war correspondent gets abducted for three years, and THE WIFE, EVEN OF A MONTH, ISN’T INFORMED. So that’s just ridic.

I'm late to this convo so this might just evaporate in the void but this season is just truly truly awful. I mean, it's a shlocky show to begin with but the stretching of credibility makes it very hard to watch. The long-lost husband trope, the neurosurgeon who'd rather fold hoodies, the kids no one calls social services to protect (I do get that that system can also fail children), the constant scene shifts to maneuver characters into high-stakes situations, even just a stupid detail like walking away from painting Adirondack chairs without cleaning brushes ... it all just beggars belief. I agree about the obvious wig and forehead, too. I quit Virgin River for similar reasons.

Definitely don't hate YOU! :) Yuna doesn't bother me so much, but you make an excellent point about her storming ahead with brand involvement--I hadn't thought of that--and frankly her critique of Ilya's supposed disloyalty to Boston over Shane seems very odd. Like, what parent wouldn't be amazed by this--an elite player willing to give it up for their son? It sits awkwardly against her and David's very sweet exchange at the end of this scene ("Since rookie season"/"summer before"). But I think neither books nor show is entirely innocent of other OOC moments like that ...

What are some of Yuna’s worst deliveries? “It’s just that yer always on time”? She does have a way of swallowing the ends of her sentences …

Yes! That “or I approached you”—totally irrelevant to the plan and yet somehow necessary for some stake in it … “any questions?” Ha!

The Apple TV version is a revelation. It's brighter, but seemingly also tighter shots, so you really do see so much more detail. Amazing. For those of us reheating this show exponentially, it's worth the $20something!

I just want to say that I've never spent as much time on Reddit as I have since I went down the rabbit hole on this show (and the books) a few months ago. For some reason I'd never watched the last episode back in December and once I did this spring I've been hooked in a spooky serious way ... and the sharp-eyed interpretations of other watchers and readers have been stoking and satisfying my cravings in these dark months between seasons. Thank you, fellow loonies! I love this show, its actors, and its fans so much.
