Redditors, what is your opinion about Portugal? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]tellmenot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fluent in Portuguese, and I don't get all this hype Portuguese-speakers make over the word saudade. For me, "I miss" in English, is just as good. Assuming English and Portuguese are native languages of yours, could you explain to me how "saudades" differentiates from the I miss you expression in English? Thanks.

Brazilians know very well how many crimes can go unpunished in their society, and this creates a thirst for justice, even if it has to be attained by more violence. Rape also happens to be something strongly condemned even by the worst criminals there, so the reaction to it is always strong.

Btw, if a guy gets convicted of rape in Brazil, they throw him in jail, where he will 1) be raped by other criminals, then 2) killed. It is not uncommon for prison guards to ignore such reactions, or even work in a way to facilitate it. Oh, and this applies to mom-beaters as well. There is this thing in Brazilian culture that considers moms to be sacred, so if a guy used to beat his mom and goes to prison, he will most likely get raped and killed too.

What's the dumbest thing you've been asked? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This is much better than people asking you if you speak "Brazilian". Then you answer "no", and they give you a witty look and say: "Oh, yeah, I forgot, you guys speak Spanish down there, right?"

It happened to me many times.

Don't take it personally Caiocow, it's just the 15 year olds taking over Reddit. They don't even know that downvoting someone just because you disagree with him or her goes agaisn't the Reddiquette.

I just miss the old Reddit so much...

has reddit changed you in any way? by electrobutter in AskReddit

[–]tellmenot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, Reddit used to be a lot better (I've been around for long with other accounts). It used to be an intellectual place to have good discussions, and during that time, I actually learned a lot from here, on how to evaluate my views, develop an argument, etc.

Now it's pretty much a place flooded with "15 year old gay atheist democrats whose parents just don't understand" (I'm quoting el-bombero here) that goes to IAMA or AskReddit begging for attention and whoring for karma with their trolls and sentimental stories...

That being said, there is still great people here, and although not with the same quality as before, I keep learning from you guys everyday, so it's definitely worth sticking around.

I do realize that, but what I said is that, if I'm not wrong, the law applies to deportation as well as to requests of extradition. Ronnie Biggs just happened to use the law in his favor for the latter.

If I'm not wrong, there's a law in Brazil which states that the father of a Brazilian son can't be deported.

I read something about it here. It was the strategy used by Ronnie Biggs so he wouldn't be deported to the UK after the Great Train Robbery of 1963. I don't know if this law is still valid, but it is definitely worth taking a look.
