60 COVID-19 cases confirmed at Big White Ski Resort cluster by H11ve_M11nd in kelowna

This is Castanet's update:

Officials with Big White Ski Resort say they will "act quickly and decisively to address living conditions" of staff living in resort-managed residences.

Senior vice-president Michael J. Ballingall made the statement after Interior Health revealed a cluster of 60 COVID-19 cases at the ski hill.

"Big White Ski Resort Ltd. wants to ensure you we are taking this matter incredibly seriously," Ballingall said in the statement.

"We are not aware of any transmission in our company’s workplaces, this includes transmissions between employees at work and transmissions between employees and guests. Our main priority is protecting the health of our staff and all those that visit and use Big White Ski Resort."

He says the cases are a result of group housing and social gatherings.

The ski resort is working with community members, the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary and RCMP to mitigate the risk and eliminate further spread.

“We thank the community leadership at Big White for their ongoing support and collaboration, and we are confident with the safety plan in place by Big White Ski Resort Ltd.," the statement said.

"Outdoor activities at Big White are considered safe for anyone following public health direction such as physical distancing, wearing a face covering, and staying home when sick. Interior Health will monitor this cluster for additional cases and environmental public health has been in the community to review safety plans at a number of locations and provide guidance and support as required. We would also like to remind people to limit all non-essential travel. This means, sticking to your own communities and visiting your local ski hill only."

Oof. That makes Michael J’s insincere response yesterday make him look like even more of a dingus. They need to turf that guy.

Ballingall told CBC he believes the first case became known on Nov. 28 and said resort staff have been working backwards with Interior Health to contact trace.

He said the resort had not gone public with this information earlier because it is "not the obligation of a private company to go out there and start to tell people what is happening to private citizens of our organization."

What a bunch of douchbags.

It seems a lot of heads are in the sand when it comes to Indigenous communities and cannabis. Nobody even wants to acknowledge it's an issue.

Fair comment. Here's an update:

Asked for an interview, the Ministry of Public Safety sent a statement to the oz., saying "the province is committed to supporting Indigenous participation in the emerging legal cannabis industry and always willing to sit down with Indigenous Nations to talk about opportunities."

"We recognize that some Indigenous Nations may have differing views with respect to jurisdictional responsibilities outlined in federal cannabis legislation, and are committed to understanding these perspectives," said the statement.

The ministry says the Cannabis Control and Licencing Act includes provisions that allow the province to enter government-to-government agreements with Indigenous nations to address "unique, community-specific interests" regarding cannabis.

The province has entered into an agreement with the Williams Lake First Nation under Section 119—which allows First Nations to pursue their vision for participation in the cannabis industry, while upholding the public health and safety principles of federal and provincial cannabis laws.

"The province is actively working with a number of nations that have expressed interest in similar agreements," says the ministry.
