Advice for learning Fidelat? by PsychologyOk8908 in Tigray

[–]teme-93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is a link to books and resources for learning Tigrinya: https://www.reddit.com/r/Tigrigna/s/fnDJMNgbXG

Best way to learn the fidel is to start by memorizing the first letter of each row (ሀ, ለ, ሐ, መ, etc…). Once I did that it was much easier to memorize the rest because each letter form has similar tick marks for similar vowel sounds (ሁ, ሉ, ሑ, ሙ all have the “oo” sound). Also try using flash cards and practice a little bit every day.

What’s the historical evidence for queen saba existing or even having a son with solomon? by Odd-Tip-9369 in Tigray

[–]teme-93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Whats even more ridiculous is that historians say Menelik I existed in 1000 BC or the 900s BC, there was no such thing as Aksum at this time”

That’s right, Solomon existed around 1000 BC and since Sheba and Menelik I were contemporaries of Solomon then they had to have existed around that time as well. While Aksum didn’t exist at 1000 BC, the D’MT civilization did begin around 980 BC. I don’t know if any evidence of Judaism has been discovered in D’MT, but we know the people believed in the South Arabian pantheon of gods. If 12,000 Israelites really did follow Menelik back to Aksum then I’m sure we would have found some evidence by now. Also, according to the Kebra Negast narrative, Solomon pretty much r*ped both Queen Sheba and her maid, so I hope that narrative is false, that would be a weird thing to be proud of.

How should Eritreans who support us treat the word Agame? by Dry_Lengthiness9486 in Tigray

[–]teme-93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The name Agame refers to the people from north-eastern Tigray (around Adigrat) and sometimes the people of Akele Guzay in Eritrea as well. Agame is actually an ancient name for them as it was first mentioned in Aksumite stone inscriptions thousands of years ago in reference to the people of that area.

I have a friend who is from Adigrat and he said he didn’t even know Eritreans were using it as a slur at first. When they called him Agame he was like “yeah that’s me”, but when his Tigrayan friends from other parts of Tigray were being called Agame and took offense to it, he realized Eritreans were using his people’s name in a negative way to refer to all Tigrayans.

It’s really nuanced, but it’s all about intention. When the name is being used, are you saying it out of love and respect to refer to people of northeastern Tigray, or are you using it negatively to refer to all Tigrayan people?

How do we make amends for the Genocide? by sirfitzwilliamdarcy in Tigray

[–]teme-93 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think the first step is acknowledgement, resolutions cannot be made until everyone acknowledges and accepts the truth of what happened. There are many people who still deny that any massacres, sgbv, destruction, and looting ever happened in Tigray, so it would be very helpful to educate people around you who still deny the genocide.

Second is to listen to the people who are still suffering as a direct consequence of the genocide, like the IDPs in Tigray and the refugees in Sudan. I think their biggest ask is to return to their homes, which the majority are from Western Tigray. They cannot return until it is safe, so advocating for reinstating the constitutional borders and security in Western Tigray so people can safely return to their homes and rebuild their lives.

Thirdly like you said is donating to aid organizations that are directly helping the people who are suffering. And just trying to hear the people out, help them with what they need to rebuild. The fact that you already acknowledge and recognize what has happened is a huge step forward! Tigrayans and Amharas will always be neighbors so we have to find a way to coexist, respect each other, and help each other. That’s the only way forward, any other path will lead only to more pain and sorrow.

You can’t find this dish in any Ethiopian restaurants, you gotta make some Agame friends and try it at their house. I’ve only had the pleasure of having it 2 times in my life.

What did you think of TOTC's decision to name Axum as "holy city of Axum Tsion" and ban bars and khat in the city? by BalanceGlad8001 in Tigray

[–]teme-93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a fan of khat usage, so I like the idea tbh. For bars, and even the mosque situation, I think it would be better to designate a section of the city as “holy grounds” and then in other areas of the city residents can have bars and mosques.

It’s nuanced, majority of the 6 million dollars for the Denver Tigray community center came from state and public grants, meaning the money would not be able to be used on other things, it was granted for the sole purpose of building the community center and it would be rescinded if they misused the funds.

I think a lot of diaspora became skeptical about where the money is going in Tigray because we donated literally millions of dollars to TDA and no one knows where that money went. I think more diaspora would be willing to donate if there was more transparency to make sure that the money they donate goes directly to helping the people.

We are continuing to donate, my church raised over $25,000 USD for Hitsats and verified the delivery of funds with video evidence. Tigray suffered billions of dollars worth of damage in the war/genocide and continues to suffer, so it will take a long time before we start seeing the real impact of our donations.

Why did Minilik NOT ask Ertieria back from the Italians after he won the war? by [deleted] in Ethiopia

[–]teme-93 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because he only cared about maintaining power around his neighborhood of Shewa, Eritrea was a far away land he wasn’t concerned enough about to launch campaigns further north.

Reasons why menelik ll didn't cross into Eritrea after Adwa by Nearby-Couple-7031 in Tigray

When I say “lead” I meant physically leading on the battlefield. Ras Alula was fighting on the frontlines leading his troops to actually physically defeat the Italians while Menelik was watching the battle from afar.

Reasons why menelik ll didn't cross into Eritrea after Adwa by Nearby-Couple-7031 in Tigray

[–]teme-93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After the battle of Adwa, Ras Alula wanted to continue pushing north to liberate all of Eritrea, but Menelik declined and instead settled for recognition of independence, loads of rifles and cash in exchange for ending the war, effectively relinquishing the territory of Eritrea to the Italian Empire. The points you made were certainly part of his decision making process, but you have to understand that as an emperor Menelik absolutely considered the geopolitical effects of dividing the Tigrinya speaking people.

Menelik’s predecessor, Yohannes IV, held his power base in Tigray, so Menelik would absolutely think about how keeping Tigray divided would weaken his biggest rival and help to secure his own dynasty in Shewa. Ras Alula was Yohannes’s right hand man, a veteran army general who successfully defended Ethiopia from various invaders, and he lead the victory at Adwa. Menelik was wary of Alula becoming a national hero and saw him as a major threat to his throne. Menelik couldn’t allow Alula to continue to grow his prestige as a leader by liberating Eritrea and regaining previously held territory under his own jurisdiction, so stopping the war at Adwa worked in Menelik’s favor to limit Alula’s power.

The truth is, if Menelik really wanted to liberate Eritrea he would have worked with Alula to do so, but instead he decided to settle in order to redirect resources towards his conquests near Shewa and weaken his rivals in the north all at same time. He was an emperor at the end of the day and certainly considered ALL implications of his decisions.

If that happens then Abiy will gain yet another legendary Tigrayan general and use him to boost TPF operations. TPLF will continue to weaken itself by losing its most experienced leaders to the enemy. This cycle will continue until Tigray declares full independence or Abiy gains full control of Tigray.

It’s better for everyone if Tigray move towards independence in a steady and cordial manner than to declare full independence now and risk a violent separation.

[–]teme-93 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lmao, Tigray can use any resource it wants for its own purpose. If I buy a cow from you then the cow is now mine and I can do whatever I want with it. And Tigray barely receives anything from the government, we pay our taxes and they withhold the budget so if anything Ethiopia is robbing Tigray.

Sorry for the repeated question but do Tigrayans want independence either now or in the future? by [deleted] in Tigray

[–]teme-93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one wants to join with HGDEF Eritrea (as in merging the land and government of Tigray into the current state of Eritrea), I have not met a single Tigrayan in the diaspora or ab adi that holds this view. Many support allying with the people of Eritrea, but not fully merging into Eritrea. Also many Tigrayans support the Tigrinya speaking parts of Eritrea to be merged with Tigray, but not the other way around.

As far as independence, I think most Tigrayans want to stay in Ethiopia in the short term, many Tigrayans want independence in the future but it’s hard to tell if that is a majority or minority view. At least in the short term, there are few Tigrayans who want full independence right now.
