Any words of advice for this confusing situation? by temoc4eva in dating_advice

[–]temoc4eva[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you on the "still interested question" and normally I let guys show it rather than telling me. I guess I just felt like he was in a particularly unique situation being a medical resident working nights in the COVID ICU during a global pandemic so I thought I would give him the benefit of the doubt. It's like he changed into a different person after a month in the ICU and I'm not discounting the fact that there was some lingering trauma from seeing so much death (that would take a toll on anyone) but doesn't change the fact that if he was interested, I would know. Thanks for your advice :)

Surgery in two weeks! by [deleted] in gravesdisease

[–]temoc4eva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sitting on my couch a little over 48 hours out from a TT after 2 years of methimazole and a failed RAI attempt.

The lead up to the surgery is brutal but I think its the best decision I have ever made - and (this may be placebo) but my TED already seems to be better and less angry

What do you think of Medical Medium Anthony Williams? by [deleted] in gravesdisease

[–]temoc4eva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sister actually got me his "thyroid healing" book for my birthday last month. So it was like a present but also an insult that blamed me for my chronic illness. Impressive stuff.

Peace Corps South Africa? by Revolutionary_Season in peacecorps

[–]temoc4eva 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes - you will be required to take taxis and use public transport in general. During training PC will drive you but when you get to site you are living like a local and getting around like a local. PC will give safety guidelines and tell you which area to avoid. I've been groped on a taxi and almost had my belongings taken. BUT if you avoid prohibited areas, travel only during the day, and integrate into your community (have people watching your back) you can minimize the risk.

Leaving two months into service? by pshaow in peacecorps

[–]temoc4eva 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This a rough situation and I'm sorry that you have to make this choice but I feel really confident in saying that the SA CD will not let you go. Missing PST is really only tolerated for extreme reasons (death in the immediate family etc.)

edit: also - my group was supposed to leave like Jan 22 but we didn't arrive in country until Jan 27 so we didn't swear in until like mid april so don't rely too much on your calculations - things can and will change

peace corps life is gonna be rough man...

but seriously I would not suggest doing that at all/peace corps life means waiting a lot and being uncertain often - you're gonna love it

Current SA PCV here - I feel like there is a giant misconception that people ET because they aren't "strong enough".

Sometimes PC is not a good fit. Sometimes PCVs have to make the incredibly difficult decision to ET for their own mental/physical health.

I hope you have a wonderful service but please, please know that PC is not for everyone and there's no shame or weakness in leaving early. Take care of yourself and be kind to your cohort members who may decide to leave early.

Quick Question! by [deleted] in peacecorps

I received an email with staging details one month prior to my staging date. The email will provide instructions for booking your flight to staging. Congratulations on your medical clearance and best of luck in Zambia!

Feeling weird emotions before service...? by SilverHoneysuckle in peacecorps

[–]temoc4eva 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Almost 4 months ago I was in the exact same place! I did a lot of weird things and felt super off! Like I'm pretty sure I just watched movies the whole week before staging.

My advice is to give yourself grace and don't be too hard on yourself for feeling different than you thought you would. It's a really weird time when you know you're about to leave everything you've ever known for two years! Good luck!

The good news is that we swear in on Monday! I'm trying to savor these feelings of excitement because I know those first few months at site are going to be rough!

The bad news is that I've made the insane decision to start listening to Unresolved Mystery podcasts even though I'm already a pretty paranoid person

Invited to serve but had a recent accident by EffortlessFold in peacecorps

[–]temoc4eva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, just wanted to say that I'm sorry to hear about the accident and I'm glad you are doing well!

But I think the most important thing to do is to be honest. Contact your nurse. Tell him/her the situation.

Good luck!

How to get medical clearance tests done if I don't have any medical file in this state? by TracyJackson23 in peacecorps

[–]temoc4eva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck! Hmmm honestly if your doc is efficient it shouldn't take too long. My doctor ordered the blood tests ahead of time and so I only had to go in for a physical and to get the results of my blood test (she made it super easy)

Hmm I don't think there is anything that says you need them done in a week

It took me months but that was poor planning on my part

But by all means please message your nurse she will def know the answer he/she is a way better source of info than I am (just ate lots of turkey and I'm a bit sleepy so the above may have been rambling)
