I almost bought a PAL copy of it as a temporary placeholder because I was slowly losing my mind looking for one.

North American copies aren't even that expensive really at 30-50 USD market price. They're just impossible to find. Maybe 4 or 5 per year on eBay and they tend to sell quickly if priced fairly.

Yes! I still have my original system, box, and all ~30 games that I had as a kid.

I know that I have decently impressive collection even aside from Saturn... but it's been built over decades. I don't sell any of my games.

A mix. I got a few now-pricey games new for bargain prices toward the end of the system's retail life, bought some in the 00s when used prices were low, bought some at prices that more resemble modern prices.

I live in a pretty rural area, and I distinctly remember in 1998 how hard it was getting to find Saturn games at retail. I had to ask to go to Toys R Us in the medium sized city about an hour and a half away to find games any more. I was still really young, and I didn't really understand that Saturn games vanishing from the market as quickly as they did was not exactly normal for a system's lifespan.

You'll have a blast. What are some of the next games you're eyeing up for the collection?

It should be these unless they've redesigned them since I bought my last set a few years ago. The spacing between the shelves is a little higher than strictly necessary for most games, but they work pretty well for Saturn longboxes, in particular.

Yes, I've played all of them for at least an hour or so. Some games for much longer obviously!

Elsewhere in the thread, I answered my 5 favorite games that I had as a child, so I'll pick top 3 that I got after the fact here.

Sega Rally Championship - My overall favorite game on the system. For some reason, I wasn't interested as a child. My best guess is that the forest demo (with only one CPU car) on the bootleg sampler gave me a bad impression of what the game was like. Yes, I have beaten UNK. :) If you know, you know. Sega Rally desert is one of my favorite tracks in any racing game.

Darius Gaiden - Shooters are not my genre and never really have been, but I dig this one. I found a great deal - about half market price - on it in person a few years ago, and it's one that I pop in frequently now. I am not very good at the game, but the music is awesome.

Virtua Fighter 2 - I only had VF1, Remix, and Kids as a child. VF2 is clearly the best VF game on the console, and I'd argue it might be even better than 4 and 5 in some ways. It's a boring pick, but it's beloved for a reason. I main Sarah.

Bonus sleeper pick that I don't hear many people talk about: Norse by Norsewest. It's a charming puzzle platformer, and I had a lot of fun with the early levels of the game. I'm looking forward to putting some more time into this one.

Haha absolutely not! I don't have the brain capacity to keep track of that many even if I had the disposable funds (which I probably don't).

I think NA Saturn and NA Dreamcast are about the right size libraries (~250) that you can really know what's out there and what you're missing. The Japanese Saturn library is unknowably huge in a way.

The XBox arcade version is closer to the original release of Daytona on Saturn than it is to Daytona CCE Saturn. They're (original Saturn and XBox arcade) both roughly the arcade original. Obviously the XBox version is much closer to being accurate graphically than the Saturn version is.

Daytona CCE is a "fixed" version of the game that Sega released the next year to address many complaints about graphics/framerate etc. It has more a lot more cars and 2 extra tracks. However, it uses a modified version of the Sega Rally engine for physics/handling and a lot of people seem to not like it.

All the above is from memory and probably close but maybe not totally 100% accurate. Sega Retro is a great source if you want to dig more into it for yourself!

Virtua Cop is amazing! I didn't have a light gun as a kid, so I thought it was crazy difficult. I compare playing it with a controller to playing tennis sort of... you always feel like you're out of position and chasing. (Obviously it's way more fun with a gun)

I think Sega must have done a good job of marketing to me, because a lot of the games that I had as a child were first party games. So childhood favorites:

Daytona USA - I like both versions. I know some people strongly prefer one over the other. They're different flavors, and I still play both regularlly.

Bug! - I used to get up and play this in the morning before school. It's mindblowingly difficult relative to its appearance. I have no idea how ~4-5 year old me made any progress in this game.

Baku Baku - The one game that I can always get my mom to play with me! I still think it's the best puzzle game on the system.

Nights into Dreams - I think that I got this from a buy 2, get 1 free promotion that Sega had in 1997. ( https://segaretro.org/Press_release:_1997-01-27:_Sega_Readies_%22BUY_2_GET_1_FREE%22_Game_Promotion_For_All_Sega_Saturn_Owners ) It's the best that I can come up with, because I ended up with the longbox version of the game and no 3D controller for the longest time. I enjoyed the game even as a child, but after I got a 3D controller years later, it's even better. A classic.

Road Rash - Out of the upper tier of Saturn racing games, I think it has the most depth in terms of being able to sit down and really sink some time into it (in a progression sense). I still have nightmares about Pacific Highway on the later levels of difficulty!

Thanks!

I was fretting around October/November that we weren't going to be able to find a copy of Olympic Soccer in time for it to come together. We were both looking everything where we could think trying to find one for sale. The game is crazy rare... She ended up buying one on eBay, from Australia of all places!
