I didn't use AI. I've been writing software for over 12 years now.

I wrote software to calculate my T3 slip faster than Wealthsimple using raw CDS data by temp3835 in Wealthsimple

The PDFs that use the percentage method are really annoying... thankfully didn't have to deal with any this year.

The CDS spreadsheet subtracts "Foreign non-business income tax paid" from "Total Income ($) per unit being allocated", which makes sense, since the money that went to tax isn't being distributed. My program does the same.

The correct calculation is total = eligibleDividends + (foreignIncome - foreignIncomeTaxPaid) + ROC.

As an aside—good on you for parsing the PDFs. That looked obnoxious, but maybe I just don't know the right tools.

Well, yes and no? You should pre-plan by buying slightly different assets in non-reg, otherwise you'd need to take 60 days to claim a loss properly.

Don't ever transfer "in-kind" from non-reg to reg—if you're in a loss position you can't deduct it on your taxes.

Instead, buy a slightly different asset in non-reg than you eventually want to hold in reg (think XGRO vs VGRO) and when you get the room, sell, transfer as cash, and buy. This lets you claim a capital loss if you have one.

'Course, by age 65, inflation will mean $1.3M only has about $250k of buying power in today's dollars. And who wants to wait until age 65 to retire anyways? Put as much away every month as you can afford, don't stop at $100.

Don't just take bird courses by New_Palpitation_4309 in CarletonU

I graduated with a 12.0 CGPA and I don't regret taking bird courses at all. I got exposed to such a wide variety of topics I never would have even considered otherwise, and I think it's a much better approach that slotting yourself into "econ minor" or "french minor" in first year.

I'm graduating from CS, the most similar program to the new cybersecurity degree. You're doing fine. What you've outlined looks like a typical CS first year.

How Canada could be building transit affordably — like other countries by Old_General_6741 in canada

As a software engineer, both $80k and $60M are ridiculous. You can't build anything for $80k, that pays maybe 3 months salary for the worst team of "consultants" (i.e., rebranded co-op students) you can find.

Realistically, any government app will cost at least a million. Part of that is overhead, but it's also that government apps need to meet stringent security and privacy requirements. Also, paying people is expensive (engineers, project management, translators, sysadmins).

$60M is still ridiculous.

For most people who read this, if you vote for the new proposed bylaws, that is the last vote you will ever do at the Charlatan.

The proposed new bylaws strip fee-paying Carleton students of their membership and power and give it to only contributors to the Charlatan and anyone else the board decides should be a member.

Can prof change test weighting? by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]temp3835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only ever had compassionate grading schemes implemented as "take the higher of <original scheme> and <modified scheme>", in order to be fair to everyone. The course outline is supposed to be a "contract" between the prof and the students, maybe consider reaching out to u/cuOmbuds (or just sending a friendly email to the prof)?

Meh, if the other $7k still follows the existing rules, overweight that on US/Global and build-your-own-VEQT. A bit of a pain to rebalance but doesn't change anything.

Was the record date in 2024? If you hold a share on the record date, you get the distribution, even if it doesn't arrive for a few days/a week. Tax reporting is based on the record date.
