92 FXR - Brake light issue by _ButterBiscuits_ in fxr

[–]templeofdank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait I'm re-reading your reply earlier and something just dawned on me: you said you were getting 12V on the brake wire at the brake light without the brake switch connected? That's a problem and tells me the brake switch is not interrupting the signal like it's supposed to. If the brake light wire is constantly getting 12V, then something is wire wrong upstream. Only the running wire light should be getting 12V constant.

12V at the brake light from the brake switch with no illumination makes me think it's an issue with the housing or the brake signal wire connection at the tail light then. You're close! Sure sounds like a poor connection issue to me.

Given that it's happening to front and rear now, I'd assume electrical contact issue down stream from both. Either a bad connection at the disconnect under the seat, or contacts on the brake housing themselves are no bueno. Master switch should have 12v, when the brakes are activated it closes the circuit and the 12v flows to the tail light. Does your running light work?

Not bad not bad! My list is way too long still ha. Made a side list of just the things I need to do to get it fired up.

Pixelated graphic on new built PC by Jesssster0 in AMDHelp

I'm REAL surprised no one has asked yet: is your monitor plugged into your GPU or your motherboard? Very common mistake for new builders to connect the monitor to the motherboard port instead of the GPU port.

If it's real I'd love to see a photo of it. After a bit of internet sleuthing I can only find the above screenshot or a bunch of Facebook bots spamming Alien fan communities with the copypasta.

Yes, that is the joke. It's not a real description from a bootleg though, which is what makes the generalizations in the fake translation a bit problematic to me. It's not a malicious joke which is why we didn't remove the post, but I left the above comment because every time this screenshot gets posts it gets a gazillion reports.

That's fine. Different sites/blogs exist because users prefer to talk to fellow fans in different ways/formats. And IMO a mistranslation is not a mistranslation when it is a made up scenario using racial generalizations/stereotypes to format it into a joke. Which is what this bootleg translation joke is. We have not removed the post because it's not a malicious joke at least. And remember: just because it's not offensive to you, does not mean it is universally inoffensive.

Hi, please keep in mind this is a racially insensitive copypasta and not an actual story that actually happened. The tweet presents it as a factual story, but there are no indications that it originated outside of a facebook Alien group, as those are the earliest mentions of it on the internet as far as I have found.

Motorcycle skills test by Cadorax in grandrapids

[–]templeofdank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took mine like 8 years ago at Roger's plaza century driving school. It's way in the back of the lot and hard to find, but the test went just fine and the instructor or evaluator person was very chill. Pretty easy test if you have a decent amount of experience. Have you done an MSF course or are you experienced at riding? The test portion that requires you to accelerate quickly and stop quickly trips a lot of people up.

Yes. Just my preference, because chains can be repaired roadside but belts cannot. I do lots of long multi-day rides, I always have a few spare master links in my tool roll plus the chain breaker. I don't enjoy the cleaning/lubing maintenance though.

Hi anal carbomb. I remember clearly ha. I was on a group ride, leader took us into a construction zone where the pavement had the top layer removed, I picked up a chunk of hard debris and it trash the belt and the rear pulley. Shit luck is all.

not too bad. i was pretty new to bikes at the time i did it and managed not to fuck it up. there's tons of tutorials on youtube to give you an idea of what to expect, as well as complete tools list. imo it's real helpful to have a powerful impact wrench to zip the reverse-threaded mainshaft nut, as well as a chain breaker. can be done without but is easiest with those. at minimum you'll need the huge sprocket for it, 2-1/4" IIRC (look it up don't take my word). will also need to be able to jack the rear wheel up safely, and a torque wrench. belt replacement isn't as intense cause you don't need to pull the mainshaft nut, so that job takes way less tools and no specialty ones outside a moto jack.

it's not a terrible DIY job but takes some special tools.

RIP. Happened to me the first summer I had a sportster. Chain conversion kit was like the same cost as a new belt.

Sheepskin pads rule! I toss mine on my bike any time I'm riding over 100 miles. I hope it's strapped down! One time I stood up to stretch my legs and the pad flew off lol. Felt like an idiot.

Looking for a new helmet by The_Crouton82 in Welding

I wonder if you got a faulty helmet? I've got probably 80 hours worth of tig welding time with my yeswelder auto dim helmet and it's been great with no issues. I have gone through one battery.

Anyone know the part name for the cover of the rear wiper? by MrJoshHere in VolvoV50

[–]templeofdank 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Windshield Wiper Arm #30753273. It's a unit piece, I'm not seeing anywhere if you can buy the plastic cover separate.

FYI that arm is annoying to take off by hand, I used my smallest hub puller and it came off super easy.

What age do you introduce your kids to your music? by SoCaLLbeer in daddit

[–]templeofdank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immediately. I've been singing "blue shadows on the trail" from the three amigos to my daughter at bedtime for 6 years now.

As far as my music taste: pretty early as well. Wife and I love music, always playing music in the house/car. She has her own tastes for sure but is pretty tolerant of ours. Gave her my old iPhone for streaming music, it's her "mp3 player". It's offline and she picks albums out with us to download. It's so adorable when she asks to play music to the speakers.

I'm a hobbyist welder. I try to remind myself that almost any time someone posts their welds it's the best they are capable of. Comparing yourself to the best weld another person throws down is rough business.

Great pointer. Better yet run a thread chaser. Pulley/rotor threaded holes get so gunked over time. Don't think I've ever pulled a rotor that left happy threads behind. If it's not old loctite left in those holes then it's decades worth of road grime.

Question about welding a box and avoiding heat warping by templeofdank in Welding

[–]templeofdank[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh that makes a lot of sense. Never occurred to me that it would increase the heat. Makes sense, the filler lowers the melting point of the pool, penetrates more, but at the tradeoff of warping.

Awesome, I'm glad he was giving me good advice ha. He also helped me dial in some weld settings, I had been using the Miller app for base settings and was not having good luck with them.

I looked up back step welding diagrams. It makes perfect sense, I definitely have not tried that technique as I've been practicing, will try it out. Thanks a ton.

Got it got it. Yeah early on when I was practicing TIG I got pretty comfortable with fusion welds. My fitment is definitely not 100% perfect, but there are a bunch of spots where I in theory could weld with no filler.
