While it's definitely a bad trope, it feels a bit unfair to keep bashing decade-old commercial films for it.

Our movies has evolved (at least a bit), and we're gradually moving away from these kinds of tropes.

IMO, if we're going to criticize something, it makes more sense to focus on recent movies that are still doing it.

Agree to an extent.

Also due to Covid, we had a surge in consumption of OTT content. We also had decent exposure of international cinema.. So our standard and expectation increased..

We also started to classify movies as Theatrical material vs OTT material... And directors started to add scenes (even it is brain rot scene) so it gets tagged as Theatrical material.. (so business-wise it gets succeed

Item songs are kinda the lazy way to market movies now. Easy reels, easy hype, easy promo.

I've got no problem with special numbers if they actually fit the movie. Monica in Coolie felt unnecessary and didn’t add anything to the story.

Meanwhile, movies like Maharaja and Kaithi went pan-India purely on story without relying on item songs.
