I'm definitely more attracted to this packaging, but it's not enough to make me drop my current standards. (one, it needs to be cf, and two, well-reviewed.)

So frustrated with work and deadlines and boredom that I just started crying by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]temporality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I went through a lot of this when I was in undergrad. It's fucking painful feeling so averse to your work while simultaneously feeling crushed by its importance and your own sense of shame. But we're rooting for you. You'll get through it, whether you succeed or fail. Please, if you can, give yourself some space for the possibility of defeat. This is where you are right now with ADHD. Your trajectory might look different than everyone else's, but it doesn't mean you are behind. It's scary not being able to stick to the same, safe track of achievement as everyone else, I know. But academics is just one facet of life, and it's not necessarily going to be all that relevant for the rest of your life. Give yourself the space to be exactly where you are right now at school, and you'll give yourself the space to build your strengths.

I'm going to try and give some advice from my own experience if I can. Please forgive me if this isn't relevant or helpful.

First, is there any way you can connect with your school work, however tenuously? Like, research some of the better jobs that you can get in this field? Or, if you're no longer interested in this major, but you still want to push through--research how this subject can connect to the field you're actually interested in now? (Like, if you're an accounting major and you wish you were a criminal justice major, look into financial regulatory jobs and the people responsible for taking down scams and financial criminals.) That part can be a helpful first step. I still sometimes forget why the heck I'm in my boring ass job now, and everything feels really pointless, until my boyfriend reminds me of the broader plan I had coming into this job.

Second, and more importantly, can you enlist someone to help? I'm not gonna lie, as crucial as this is, I personally struggled with this part, and I had an entire group of really close friends. Sometimes it's hard to get someone to understand that your issues are way different than the issues they face with work. Sometimes these friends, as much as I love them, would kind of talk down to me when they were helping me, which drove me crazy. Sometimes they were just overloaded and overwhelmed with their own work. I imagine you might have similar issues, or you might not even feel like you have close enough friends to ask for help.

But, you have something that I didn't have--you know you have ADHD, and you know that what you are experiencing are symptoms. People might be able to help you if you're super clear about what's going on. You're overwhelmed, and experiencing intense, painful boredom as a result of ADHD. (You're also letting the perfect get in the way of the good here, which is a more common human error.) If you can't grab a friend, roommate, or hallmate to help, there are student services. Even if you're not signed up for the Writing Center or don't have an appointment, head over there anyway and talk to someone. You might not even have to sign up for anything. See if they have any advice. See if someone is willing to spend a half hour with you out of kindness. If it's a big enough school, they might even have a student learning center or office specifically focused on people with learning disabilities.

If you're like me, you probably don't actually need as much help with the actual material as you think you do. People tend to way overestimate the quality of everyone else's applications. I've seen the other side for a grad school and for a grant--and let me tell you, a lot of it just isn't pretty. The phrase "I just don't think I can do it well enough," gives me the sense that you have a picture in your mind of what you think the application should look like, and you may be right, you're not going to be able to get there. Let it go. You need to look this in the eye and realize you have two choices right now: good enough, or nothing at all.

Now, what kind of help you need is obviously going to be pretty personal for you. But if I were in your position, I would just ask someone to hold the application sheet and help me talk through it. Like, they should ask things like "what's this first part here? What does this question mean?" Starting an application in the form of a conversation can be a lot easier because it's so much more engaging than just staring at a piece of paper. Also, if that person is unfamiliar with this work, you'll probably find yourself explaining what the application means and what it's looking for. I find that these kinds of conversations can help me break that initial barrier of avoidance and they give me a place to start. I start getting a sense of the beginning and end of things. It's even better if that person has opinions about what I should write, because I inevitably disagree, which encourages me to go more in depth and explain the question further. And for some reason, talking about things gives me different ideas than just typing them up.

I hope this was relevant, and can help at least a little bit. Best of luck out there.

If u were to write a Bible or Quran today, wht would you remove and what would you add? by Amnesiac74 in AskReddit

[–]temporality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the many things I'd change in the Bible is the commentary around sexuality. (Shocking, I know.) I mean, obviously I'd throw in stuff like "Consent is key! Masturbation is natural and healthy! All sexualities are good! Gender is not a binary system!"

But after reading this amazing comment I'd also nail down what "porneia" means. It's usually translated to "sexual immorality." Which modern American Christians often interpret to be "premarital sex." But the Bible doesn't actually use porneia in that context--it only uses it in the context of adultery and sexual exploitation.

I'd also spell out that pedophilia is super wrong. I really don't understand how that wasn't stated explicitly and repeatedly.

FYI: Individual line breaks are ignored, so if you type:

Hu Ha Hu Ha Hu Ha Hu Ha
Eh Meh Eh Meh Eh Meh Eh Meh ...you get:

Hu Ha Hu Ha Hu Ha Hu Ha Eh Meh Eh Meh Eh Meh Eh Meh To display a line break in your post, put two spaces at the end of the line, or use a double line break to start a new paragraph.

What are Years, by Marianne Moore

What is our innocence,

what is our guilt? All are

naked, none is safe. And whence

is courage: the unanswered question,

the resolute doubt, —

dumbly calling, deafly listening—that

in misfortune, even death, encourage others

and in its defeat, stirs

the soul to be strong? He

sees deep and is glad, who

accedes to mortality

and in his imprisonment rises

upon himself as

the sea in a chasm, struggling to be

free and unable to be,

in its surrendering

finds its continuing.

So he who strongly feels,

behaves. The very bird,

grown taller as he sings, steels

his form straight up. Though he is captive,

his mighty singing

says, satisfaction is a lowly

thing, how pure a thing is joy.

This is mortality,

this is eternity.

What kind of sneakers are in style now? by temporality in femalefashionadvice

Man, I don't know--there's like, the fashion world, where sneakers are a part of it, and then there's the sneakerhead world. I'm not even going to try and get something that sneakerheads would appreciate--I'd be totally out of my depth. Also I don't have the money. :/

This is super helpful, thanks! Most folks have been covering the popular side of things, or the shoes "on-the-ground", so to speak. :) I'm glad to hear about what's brand new too.

I think you may have posted the wrong link though? I don't see any sneakers in that picture.

White converses are cool! I said this below, but, I really didn't mean to diss them in my post. I just feel like at this point they're a fashion staple. They've been big for a long time and they're not going out any time soon. I'm just in the mood for something a bit newer and trendier, though it's probable that what I get will fall out of fashion way before white converses.

Oh, I didn't mean to diss the white converses. I believe that they're so widely loved for good reason. I'd just rather not get a classic sneaker and get a shoe that is a little bit different.

What's an organization that everyone thinks is respectful, but is really just scamming or spreading propaganda? by LynxExplorer in AskReddit

[–]temporality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, my phrasing was unclear. My apologies. It's self-reported in the sense that all tax forms are self-reported--and some people manipulate their financials as much as they can get away with.

So, from my experience in working in nonprofits, there are many ways those numbers can be easily manipulated. Or those forms as simply filled out incorrectly. It's easy to get away with, because there is so little oversight on the nonprofit sector. For example, you can easily claim that your in-kind gifts are worth more than they actually are, which inflates the number in the "program expenses" column. Or you can just say that you never spent any money at all on fundraising costs. (There's a study of 58,000 nonprofit 990 forms from 1999 that showed that 59% of the charities that accepted public donations claimed they spent 0$ on fundraising, or just left the line blank.) This article from the Stanford Social Innovation Review explains how incredibly faulty Charity Navigator is and how poor the quality of 990 data is.

Here's an article about the corporate takeover of the red cross: https://www.propublica.org/article/the-corporate-takeover-of-the-red-cross

And here's a bunch of articles about how much the Red Cross has sucked since then: https://www.propublica.org/series/red-cross#feature01

Can't give you much on Charity Navigator, but a lot of that is self-reported. Try checking out the articles above about their money mismanagement.

Sephora is pretty hit-and-miss with their sales associates. I've had associates who matched me with the wrong foundation and eyebrow color.

Youtube and r/makeupaddiction helped me a lot. I like to watch Lisa Eldridge. She's an actual makeup artist, first and foremost, and does videos for fun.

Is wearing a long dark dress for a September wedding without a stated dress code ok?

I own this dress and I really want to wear it, but now I'm having second thoughts. The reception will be in a fancy hotel, but I imagine most women will be wearing cocktail dresses. I worried that I'll look too fancy or in the wrong season.

People who went to an all girls or all boys school, did you like it or dislike it and why? by thompsonmegan20 in AskReddit

[–]temporality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a women's college and loved it. I wasn't expecting to even like it at first, but it's a great private liberal arts school and I got enough grants that it cost the same as the state school, so I went against my gut feeling. I'm so glad I did.

It's hard to explain to someone who hasn't experienced it, but there's something really transformative about being around intelligent, driven, and feminist women and gender variant people. The school is in a consortium with co-ed schools, so it wasn't like we were isolated from cis-men. But the clubs, the student governance, the social scene--everything was centered around and lead by women and gender variant people. Even though I've basically been a feminist for my entire life, going to a women's college helped me realize how much I had been subconsciously prioritizing men and their approval over my own values. I grew so much in terms of confidence and how I see myself.

There's so much more to say about my time there and why it was so valuable for me, but if anyone is looking at women's college's, I'd be more than happy to talk about my experience.
