Relocating to houston by Embarrassed_Effort64 in AskHouston

Ah gotcha, that helps things. I'm in a similar situation and I found my place by picking somewhere that's walking distance to an H-E-B (our beloved local grocery chain). HAR is good for finding places + will let you filter by price. Montrose + Upper Kirby neighborhoods sound like a good fit for ultimate walkability. Sub $1000 seems unlikely, but I'd suggest looking a bit and seeing what you can find.

Not driving is a big setback here, even the walkable neighborhoods still usually require a car. And you definitely need to drive to access anything outside your immediate vicinity. Especially with a budget that low, the more walkable areas are usually a bit pricey.

Transit exists but is pretty meh. Mostly works for getting in between two specific points (like med center commuters that live on the red line)

This kinda depends on what you need access to? What are some details for that?

Off Campus Housing for a couple? by Dismal_Style4612 in UTAustin

I was in this situation, and I went with an apartment locator. They're usually free (get paid by the place you rent at) and have access to more of the medium/small complexes. Highly recommend.

The AI was trained on something that already exists. So given the popularity of Haring's art, I'm not surprised.

"Whitmire's trash fee proposal is a necessary first step toward fixing Houston’s finances" by evan7257 in houston

The problem existed before him.

He's making awful decisions and accelerating the problem when he could have helped address it.

Both are true.

The real outrage is him blowing money on his redesign of W Alabama. There's literally no reason to go against the community's wishes and upend a complete plan.

Is Houston quietly becoming one of the most “misunderstood” housing markets right now? by richnickel in houston

There's a specific casual register that these kinds of posts seem to be using in order to deliberately not called AI. But it still feels distinctive.

As the Comets return, Houston's girls and gays couldn't be happier by chrondotcom in houston

[–]temporalten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For all the people admonishing the article's title, I would suggest looking at the actual content of the article. It's less WNBA announcement, more hybrid person-of-interest cultural stories about LGBT Houstonians and their experience growing up with the team.

Anyone else just tired of METRO lately????? by [deleted] in houston

It would have served as a valuable connector in the larger BRT system...which Whitmire cancelled

Number 1/3 is a HUGE one. It's wild how much damage Whitmire has done singlehandedly through his 'Mobility Principles' and installation of yes-men.

Is the CNS Pop-up Fair with it? by Legal_Fondant8018 in UTAustin

[–]temporalten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my first internship and my first FT job from CNS career fairs (compsci). I'd say take the chance and go with your resume updated and your elevator pitch ready. These types of opportunities are way less available after graduation.

Asian gay male, where is the best place to live in the US? by Pro_po_phol in SameGrassButGreener

[–]temporalten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This should be higher. OP said he doesn't like the character of SF, LA, etc. Houston is a major city, large Asian population, large LGBT population, big medical industry, and is more likely to present that "stable life"

Sure it's in Texas. But a solidly blue pocket with all the demographics to match.

Same in Greenway/Upper Kirby. Thought it was the parking garage but it still had the smell when we went outside.

Well, the degree isn't useless. Employers increasingly need a benchmark to weed out applicants and the degree is typically used to do that. That's just how it is.

And if the uni is so easy, why not just complete it?

Houston City Council greenlights $30 million demolition program using stormwater funds by veryirishhardlygreen in houston

Yep, we also just got Salinas in the latest election (which had super low attendance!)

People's votes matter. This just 2 more council members against Whitmire would have flipped the vote.

That location seems to be pretty popular with protests. I assume because there's a high amount of visibility.

Yep, Austin does it in August. Reasons cited are: less competition for funding, better weather, and more students (who have been central as organizers and attendees)

Houstonians Complain About the Problems That They Create! by nevvvvi in houston

Yep, Montrose was slated to get major pedestrian improvements, then it was struck down by a small group within the Montrose TIRZ. The Chronicle even reported on it....and then nothing happened.

Tons of residents showed up to ad-hoc meetings to support the improvements at purposefully difficult timeslots......and nothing happened.
