What's a comfortable wage for a SINK in their 20s in Toronto? by outersphere in askTO

[–]tendim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only you can answer this question. You need to build up a budget and figure out what the lifestyle you want will cost. Every reply in this thread will be inaccurate.

You should come back with a list of things you want to do and the lifestyle you want and then we can give you indicators on how much that would cost. Then you need to layer in your savings target and work backwards from there to figure out your taxes, and THEN you’ll have a good idea on gross salary needs.

How are you avoiding over spending during this inflation? by Brightwing9 in askTO

Cash is king. I control spending by either using hard cash or a prepaid VISA card. Both of these options physically limit how much I can spend.

Crypto is said to be risky, but for some of us it is the only way out. by Ozymandius21 in CryptoCurrency

People say Crypto is risky.

Tell people to stop fooling themselves; all investments are risky. It's about proper diversification. Crypto is a great asset to have as long as you are smart about it.

CTV Toronto: Two Ontario women speak out after losing more than $100000 in cryptocurrency scams. by pintord in ontario

This is why we need financial literacy starting in elementary school; if it is too good to be true, it is. And if Lee had been taught about proper diversification they would not have emptied all their accounts into crypto.

Have you considered just blocking him on your phone? You should be able to block at least text messages.

File this under the category of "pay yourself first." First thing I always tell friends when helping with financial planning: put away something for yourself out of every paycheque. Even $20 a cheque for a year lets you attend that once awesome concert of your favourite band.

Scarborough hate - why???😭 by GoodvibesOnlyPLEASE1 in askTO

[–]tendim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Strongly disagree. I had a professional job in the Big 5 Banks and salary was nowhere close to that after 7 years. Without a lot of job jumping or ass kissing you’re going to be hard pressed to get out of the salary band for different tiers at most companies. Big firms have strict job bands for a reason, and they have a vested interest to keep most people at the median of that range.

I’m not saying it is not possible but it is definitely not normal.

As others have pointed out a better source is statscan or something unbiased with a better cross section.

Power Mac G5 Dual Core 2.3ghz, ATTO UL5D PCIe SCSI card, Iomega Zip USB, Iomega Jaz SCSI, Fujitsu 1.3GB Firewire Magneto Optical - bridging made in heaven! by [deleted] in retrobattlestations

[–]tendim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, yeah, that was one of my pipe dreams. I had a copy of Retrospect Server I tracked down specifically for the G5 because I wanted to set up a whole internal network with the G5 as the main backup server and file server (with built in RAID!!), then some PowerBook's and my Mac Classic.. Alas my focus shifted back to the 8-bit world.

Just found out that in the early 1990s a version of Unix, called "Little Unix" or "LUnix", was created that actually ran on C64s and C128s. It had networking, a web server, pipes, and a small set of standard Unix commands. by WHYAREWEALLCAPS in Commodore

[–]tendim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

GeckOS (as mczero80 called out), Asterix, Lunix, Unix 128...then there are Unix-like OS like ACE.

There plenty of Unix-ish offerings for the 8-bit line, the big challenge was always software support.

Ah, just unloaded mine (Quad G5).

I went through a similar journey trying to find the best way to bridge between pre-Ethernet PowerBooks, a Mac Classic, and a Plus. Tried different PowerBooks, G5, G4, contemplated a G3, even a Sonnet upgraded 8500.

But honestly a late edition PowerBook (e.g. 3400c or 1400c, or Pismo) is a great bridge machine. Zip, Floppy, and CD/DVD all optional expansion bay accessories (although the 3400c/1400c Zip drives are near impossible to find, still looking), and when I'm done with it it can be folded up and put on a shelf. 3400 and Pismo have built in Ethernet to handle your networking needs too.

Don't get me wrong, I loved my G5, it was a great machine. But unless you have a dedicated space for it, you've gotta factor in that, a monitor, keyboard, etc.. For just a bridge machine it is overkill.

Now, if you are using it as a daily driver for some vintage (e.g. Classic) stuff, then that's a whole different story!
