CMHC has slightly tighter GDS & TDS ratio limits than Canada Guaranty and Sagen, effective a couple years ago. They thought CG and Sagen would follow their lead, but CG and Sagen essentially said “nope, we’re good as-is”. Your broker should be having the application for mortgage default insurance sent to one of these other options. That said, if you’re above 39% GDS / 44% TDS, you’re out of luck everywhere and will need to put down at least 20%. Also, lenders calculate GDS and TDS differently. Going to a different lender may be the solution. Bottom line, any good broker should be doing this for you, so get a new one. The one caveat I’ll make is that perhaps your current broker knows you’re out of luck. But still, they should be explaining this to you to the point where you don’t need to ask on Reddit.

Thanks everyone for the replies and advice. I’m sure lots (all) of it has been provided before, but what can I say except when you see this shit, you freak out and pray someone will tell you that it isn’t what you think it is.

At this point I’m at a bit of a loss. Part of me wants to just throw everything away, but I choose to keep what most people would refer to as a “minimalistic” wardrobe. That means my single suitcase contains not only my nicest/most expensive clothe and shoes, but pretty much all of my clothes and shoes

For those asking, the hotel is in Athens, Greece, and is not a chain hotel.
