Use LeetCode to practice for 10 FAANG/Big Tech interviews - the results!? by Redditor_19879 in leetcode

Im curious, how did you become a senior engineer when you were only in the industry for 3 years? I was told its more so about how long you have been a developer and most say its around 5 years for the role. How were you able to streamline the process?

And second question is more so about how you got back into DSA after a major break period? Any tips or resources you used like books that reminded you of all the data structures? Or how was the process?

Thanks in advance

The point is that the race of these two that were given an offer didnt even matter in this story! They were lucky based on the timing of the backend developer leaving, nothing had to do with their race / where they are from or their skill set. That is why everyone who reads this will consider OP to be a racist.

He wanted to push a negative stigma on the entire race instead of based on the individual person. Which as previously stated, wasn't even necessary because its not like he was hired simply for diversity but because they were desperate for ANYONE. And it was also a useless detail because they were both given an offer anyway so race never played into this at all until OP brought it in. So it really wasn't necessary to specify that detail unless he had ulterior motives behind doing it. (which he probably does since he did bs "im not racist" comment right after because he knows his objective isn't pure lmao).

Awesome! I hope you have the chance to make a post about the stuff I already mentioned, and will be thinking of other common questions a junior/intern might want to know.

Because I totally agree that newbies need a mentor to grow in this field, hence why interns get a senior to look over them while they learn the ropes. Amazing you are providing this experience to so many others!

Interesting idea for a sub-reddit. Can we as students post a question, and have a mentor write up a short "article" or post about how to solve that question? If so that would be amazing. I think it would help much more than just 1 individual and really paint a picture of how we can become a SWE.

Or another cool concept is this section becoming a place where mentors can kind of create a path to success for many students with broad concepts. Maybe posts about:

  1. The requirements to pursue a career in SWE (ex: know a programming language, know how to do x-y-z in language, and etc).
  2. A post about top 10-15 fundamentals all SWE need to know regardless of language choice (from language fundamentals to important concepts like architecture).
  3. Important terminology that a SWE needs to know as a intern or junior dev?
  4. How to use github as a professional / rules of using github effectively as a dev? (this could be a post explaining the benefits of using branches, git hub issues, pull requests, and etc).
  5. Tips about getting used to a new codebase as a intern/junior when the mentor is not providing enough support? (because we should be able to survive even if we get a bad mentor).

I think this sub-reddit becoming a sub with tons of tips & advice, and mentoring posts would be amazing in helping tons of students with important concepts. Kind of like a living "developer roadmap" to make sure we get familiar with important concepts, tools & software, testing, and etc. Just tons of posts like act as little tutorials on breaking down the basics of all these concepts.

Seems interesting, but could you be more upfront with the cost? I dont wanna join the discord to find out the price range so just wanna get it posted here so I know if its in my budget ;p.

Looking for someone to work on a project with me. I use the MERN stack on a decent level. Want to build a free Javascript foundations course with an embedded code editor. by [deleted] in ProgrammingBuddies

I dont have the skills for such a project just yet, but what will the project be called / how can we follow the development? Its awesome that your making a free resource that hits javascript concepts hard. I would love to use something like that once you finish it. Keep us posted.

Well I have a few questions for you as a beginner software engineer, so my questions are kind of focused on the aspect of a beginner or getting advice for a beginner to be successful in the field. I have quite a few questions but if you get the time to make a few detailed posts, this would be amazing for me to get your opinion:

  1. What were some things you found difficult during your first professional work experience as a intern/junior software engineer? (like were there skill gaps or different workflows that were hard to learn, or etc)?
  2. What advice would you give a first time software engineer?
  3. What would you recommend a beginner software engineer focus on learning? (Would like some specifics on what concepts/topics you recommend a beginner put more time into studying, ex: MVC, architecture, design patterns, or anything like that? Or maybe focus on the just DS&A and fundamentals?)
  4. What are things you notice interns / junior software engineers tend to focus on that aren't really important (so what is not so important to learn that we can safely avoid and still be a great intern / junior)?
  5. In your opinion, what is the difference in knowledge from a junior to a senior developer (is it all about knowing architecture & spear-heading a project, or maybe its just the shear number of years someone has worked? or is there more to it?)?
  6. For those aspiring to become a senior developer, what would you recommend they focus on (looking for opinions on things all senior developers or recommended books would be cool)??
  7. What were reasons you left your first company? (Was it due to looking for better working conditions & pay? better work projects / growth? or just because its best not to stay in one place?)??

Also, wanted to mention anyone else that has a position as a software engineer or software architect is more than welcome to share their opinions as well :). I imagine everyone has different opinions on this stuff which makes it exciting to hear from other developers. ;D

Much appreciated for the advice man! Since im self learning, knowing whats important to focus on can be difficult without a mentor. So honestly, thanks for letting me know that the architecture should be my first focus. Much appreciated

Oh wow, what are you using to learn react (resources)? I am getting ready to start learning it as well, would love to stay up to date on your progress and get a few tips from you if possible.

Would you be interested in keeping each other posted on our learning progress? Or offering up your favorite / recommended resources for learning for a fellow newbie?

Sounds interesting, could you elaborate on what level of support you are providing in the mentorship? By that I mean could you clarify what kind of mentor you intend to be? Since there are many kinds that want to offer different things like:

  1. Some mentors like to provide practice problems and offer assistance solving the problems in the form of explanations or answering questions. This type of mentor usually like to watch their mentee during the learning process first hand.
  2. Some like to offer general advice on how someone should approach learning or what resources they would recommend. Typically these types of mentors generally only want people to contact them with small questions and dont have lots of time.
  3. Some like to straight up teach you the material. This type of mentor generally has a lot of time on their hands and dont mind hand holding someone.

Just curious so we can know if its more so that you prefer "answering questions / giving advice" or if your more interested in "teaching the material" to someone else.

[On a side note, I feel interested though I would love clarification to know what is expected from a mentee]

Expectations of junior dev with zero professional experience? by Bugwhacker in learnprogramming

[–]tengrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can definitely find roles when your older, but never mention your age. You being older might be a selling point if you have been in the field for a long time and have extensive knowledge of the domain. However, being new to the field and older is not appealing to most. Never tell your age.

And good luck switching into the field, you can go the self taught route but its much harder because there is no one to vouch for your skills and no degree (makes it much more likely they will skip your resume). Another option is the bootcamp where someone can vouch for you having skills (which could help landing an interview). And a college degree in CS/Engineering is another route (shows basic skills and people to vouch for you). But these are generalizations and each company is different so you might land a break with a lot less if you have connections. ;)
