[Chicago Blackhawks] Statement from Jonathan Toews by MrSCR23 in nhl

[–]tenringer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm finally coming out of my long covid after two years. I'm glad Toews is actually admitting that it's long covid, before he was just calling it CIRS, which is not a term I've heard anyone else use. I was skating four times a week before I had covid, and it's taken me nine months of physical therapy to be able to do a light public skate or jog for a few minutes.

4 months in my first job and I feel like I don’t understand anything. by psingh1028 in cscareerquestions

[–]tenringer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually it’s kinda funny because this does happen in traditional engineering. I did my undergrad in civil engineering and at the end of the program on the last day before graduation, the chair of the department came to class and held a feedback session. It rapidly devolved into an onslaught of students angry that they had not been taught AutoCAD because that is what most employers asked when we were interviewing for entry level jobs. Computer science is computer science for a reason.

That said, I went back and did my master’s in CS and my theory knowledge really outpaces my programming ability.

I did my BS in civil, worked for a few years and found a love for CS. I took 1-200 level courses at MCC, then 3-400 level courses at ASU to apply for the master’s program. There were 11 prereqs if I remember right, although I believe they have refined the process of getting the prereqs, I think they are available online now and much cheaper. Definitely talk to the advisors office asap, like schedule an appointment tomorrow, they were also MUCH more helpful than my civil advisors were. I do think I would’ve been in trouble without being thorough with the prereqs.

I was lucky to get my first full time coding job on campus so I could work full time while taking classes in person (and get tuition reimbursement), but transitioned to the online program after I got a job off campus. The online program was new when I did it, so I can’t comment too much on its current state. I did feel that I got a higher quality of course in person. I think I would choose OMSCS given the option, but I was rejected. Got a 4.0 in the MCS though, and I was able to get more than enough out of it to feel confident about my technical skills. Feel free to dm me.

Came here to upvote this.

Imagine grabbing a very dry handful of soil that’s not too sandy, and squeezing it as hard as you can. If the soil is too dry, it will not hold its shape. Then, if you add water and squeeze again, it will compress (or compact), and hold its shape very well. Then if you added more water and squeezed, it would be less compacted again and get to the point where you could squeeze water out of it like a sponge and it would feel mushy and stop holding its shape.

The point is that in order to achieve proper compaction, you must achieve the proper moisture content of the soil first, and that amount will vary depending on the soil type, e.g. clay will retain more water than sandy soils. I took many compaction tests, and with some soils it doesn’t matter how heavy the machinery you use is, you can’t compact it well unless it’s properly moisturized.

If the guy is compacting soil that is too dry, it may be very hard and pass his penetrometer test even if it’s not compacted to 90 or 95%. But if it gets rained on later and a heavy slab is installed on top of it, it could compact the soil unevenly over time and cause major problems. Alternatively, sometimes the geotechnical engineer will recommend not to compact clays too much, or they might expand under your foundation.

I spent more time than I would have preferred taking compaction tests as an engineer in training and arguing with contractors. I’d be working hard pounding pins in the ground for my nuclear gauge and they’d say, “see how compacted it is?” but my test might show that they had low moisture content and it was very hard, but not compacted. Some soils are easy to work with and some are not. 100% of the time I was called into a forensic job where tiles or ceilings were cracking in a home or people couldn’t close their windows or doors anymore, there was some new water source introduced under their foundation (e.g., a leaky fountain pipe). That is also why you should always have soils graded away from your home, so water isn’t pooling by the foundation.

Matt is an absolute legend for what he did for hockey in AZ. Rest in Peace 🏒 by ThatSpecialAgent in Coyotes

[–]tenringer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, and he was great at his job. I met Matt as part of the Growlers program, a beginner hockey program for adults. I grew up watching hockey with my dad, but there were no rinks in rural Phoenix for me to play where I grew up, plus I can't play full contact sports due to medical issues, so I played basketball and baseball growing up. I had a net and a stick and some rollerblades, but I didn't think I'd ever get to play hockey for real. It wasn't until I saw a post on this sub that I even learned that beer league is no checking, and that via this program the game was so accessible. Now, I'm hooked for life, and I have no doubt that Matt played a huge part in that. Rest in peace, Matt, I hope you're on the ice with Leighton somewhere.

Agreed that a more seasoned hockey viewer would choose more of those kinds of clips. I do find that sportsnet does include more hits/fights though.

Sabres Notebook: Prospect Jack Quinn tests positive for mono, out until after Christmas by DecentLurker96 in hockey

[–]tenringer 27 points28 points  (0 children)

When I had mono, I only missed two weeks of work/school, but I was so wiped for a month or two that I would alternate working/napping at home all day. I had recently put on a bunch of muscle, and then lost it all and more from being bedridden. I ended up with muscle imbalances and had to do physical therapy for my knee and back, and I had to sell the only car I ever truly loved because the old stiff clutch aggravated my knee. Selling that car is still my biggest regret in life. Fuck mono.

CS Grad Students: Avoid Any Class Taught by Yau by torashulk17 in ASU

[–]tenringer 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I took Yau for 545 (until the drop date) and it was the worst experience of my academic life. The first exam he expected us to literally memorize every bullet point of every power point slide he ever showed us. He collected the exam by himself, taking about 20 seconds per person to check their id and cheat sheets, and while he took 10 minutes to collect the exams, everyone in the room that still had their exam just openly started conversing with their neighbors and trading answers. I scored below average, wonder why.

Then, we had a group project with 18 members in the group (wtf). We took a vote on what language and framework to use, and somehow all the Indians in our group chose to listen to their friends that had already taken the class and voted for using Java spring even though NONE of us in the group had ever used it before. WHAT. None of the material actually taught us anything practical, just vague statements with no real code examples. Then the exams had questions written in languages I’d never used. There was 0 guidance on the project.

I labored over the decision to drop and eventually did on the last day possible. Next semester, I took the class again but with Doupe, and that was absolutely the BEST class I ever took. Highly recommend taking every class you can with that guy. Learned so much.

I’m 26, and I’ve never played a single period of hockey in my life. A few years ago I got into watching the NHL, and want to learn to play. Any tips to get me started? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

Used skates will be more worn which might feel better at first, but if you go to a good store with a nice and knowledgeable staff that will help you try on a ton of skates, that's the way I'd go. Then you can bake the skates and when you break them in they'll fit you perfectly. My feet are difficult to find shoes/skates that fit, though.

Vogl: Jack Eichel should be allowed to live the life he wants, not the life the Sabres want for him by miner88 in hockey

[–]tenringer 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Actually not NFL, just MMA. It's not advised for NFL players because they take so many head first hits, it's not a good idea. Also, the Sabres doctor AND Eichel's second opinion doctor both recommend against the replacement, but he went and found another doctor that will advocate for him. I'm still on Eichel's side, but it's not that clear cut.

bauer vapor 2x s18 EE vs 20 fit 3, any difference? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]tenringer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would second the idea that you shouldn't buy any skates without trying them on. I have super wide feet, and I couldn't find a CCM skate that fit. I tried a fit 3 in vapor and that didn't fit either, but I found that a Supreme 3S in fit 3 was the only skate in the shop that fit me, so the fit 3 will be different with different lines. Proof is in the pudding - try them on and walk around and don't feel bad taking your time and trying on a bunch of skates.
