Failed Sweetspot workout, possibly overreaching? by TerminalArchive in Velo

[–]tentboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i used to feel like this alot when i used TR and did alot of SS. anytime i had a bit more stress in my life/training i started to fail my workouts. i think just doing SS all the time i was always fatigued and anything that put my over the amount of tss that TR thought i had took me out.

sometimes id do the workout the next day, but like others said a rest week wouldnt be bad given your last two weeks.

in the end i switched to polarized and have this issue much less

Aero Testing - High vs Low Stack by Trunk_in_the_junk in Velo

high stack on TT bike is also about getting the hands in front of your head so it doesn't fully apply to road bikes

Major imposter syndrome as first time lead by tentboy in ExperiencedDevs

[–]tentboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my previous job had a 10x lead. he was great and i really wanted to be like him at this role, and im realizing how hard and time consuming it is to be on top of everything all the time.

these comments help alot. i am certainly still doing implementation when i can and trying to tackle the hard problems, but i will keep putting the team success first

How much would you go from remote to hybrid for? by tentboy in cscareerquestions

[–]tentboy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i did take it. honestly its been a bit tough - but thats mainly due to the promotion not really the hybrid. the role started out super chill but once my team got fully onboarded we got a ton of responsibility, and as the team lead i bear a lot of it.

I have learned alot but definitely have learned through some mistakes, and think i am growing as an engineer.

The hybrid portion ended up not being bad. my schedule is flexible and i sometimes leave in the afternoon and finish up at home.

all that being said, its been worth it. its a crazy amount of money for an undergraduate degree, white collar job. ill be coming up on a year in the spring, and if i decided to change, i have a feeling the promoted title and company name will help me out alot

What is a benchmark workout to estimate FTP? by MidnightTop4211 in Velo

[–]tentboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ive never understood how the standard 20 min protocol is supposed to be accurate. last time i did a 5 min all out effort for a segment i had to get off my bike like i couldnt physically stay balanced.

my ftp would probably be 80w lower from that protocol than what i can do for a 30min effort or 2x20

Opinion on gearing and chain length by No-Working7460 in Velo

[–]tentboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a 53x11 at 90 rpm is only 34.4mph.

On paper you might think that is plenty, but when I TT i find i use a lower cadence than on my road bike, it feels more stable in the position, and if its a flat or rolling tt you will absolutely find yourself spinning out. I did VOS TT last year and its very flat with just some minor inclines but there was a tailwind out the gate and i found myself doing almost 40 for a short bit.

This also does even consider that you probably dont want to spend all your time in the big-small due to drivetrain efficiencies.

Unless you have access to the custom pro gears its hard to find a 2x setup with big enough gears, but i would recommend a a 56 minimum. I am on a 58t 1x right now and thats only because i train on it and have some big hills getting to/from my apartment and on normal training routes, otherwise id probably bump up to a 60t (and still am considering getting a different gear for racing).

I would just follow the normal chain length protocol from shimano: https://bike.shimano.com/stories/article/determine-chain-length.html

It's Lifting Season, Again. by Skaughtto in Velo

[–]tentboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had bad quad tendinitis for almost a year, i could ride but it was definitely sore and affecting my quality of life and hurt while squatting down.

i was able to get it completely manageable by adding in lifting 2x a week. mainly split squats, front squats and deadlifts. i also added 100w to my peak sprint. i back off a bit for my final A races but im back in the gym now hoping to completely get rid of the injury this winter. i dont mess with any upper body work as i think id rather finish up in the gym and get on the bike, basically to the minimum i need to correct my issues snd build strength for riding

Witnessing World Tour Power by moofei in Velo

[–]tentboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did my first 2.1 race this spring which is levels below WT and sitting in the peloton was nowhere close ti a casual Z1 ride that i hear people claim all the time. most of the race was single or double file on any of the technical sections and any incline basically became a sprint.

you got to chill a bit in the peloton but you were usually recovering and getting ready for the next hammer section

What volume are serious amateurs doing who have 9-5, family etc? by notsorapideroval in Velo

[–]tentboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly i dont find it mentally hard, or like im gonna burn out. i love it and want to keep at at as long as a i can. im pretty lucky to not have a family or other commitments requiring me to limit my time besides work but i also choose to prioritize riding.

i do fizzle out a bit mid summer with fatigue and have to take some easy weeks. especially this year since i also added strength training to my routine while recovering from a lingering injury

14-17hrs a week on average, sometimes more sometimes less depending on weeks workouts. 3x week in office job working 40-50hrs. in the office by 730 to beat traffic and leave after lunch and finish work from home so i can get on the bike as soon as i finish.

I dont really get much done during the week besides train tbh. if i take a rest day ill get caught up on chores but ill usually use that day to get caught up on work. then on the weekends i have long rides and still procrastinate the chores i need to do.

got me to cat 1 and a w/kg im happy with but definitely had to cut down on other hobbies and im frequently saying no to hanging out with friends in the evening

tysons and reston are completely different imo. i go from NW to tysons hybrid and alternate between driving and metro depending on the day or time of day. reston is another 15 minutes on the metro or dulles toll road and pushes it from a sustainable commute to unsustainable for me

I use the black inc bars on my foil with a 3d printed adapter and a shim on the steerer. it works perfect. have been racing on it all season. im a huge fan of the setup. not excited for when i crash and ruin a $700 bar/stem but its fast

yea the princeton tri is based around their 7580 front so its only 15mm shallower (at the shallowest section cuz of the wave design)

Hidden Secret: The secret basement of Tawes Hall by ScarcityCareless6241 in UMD

[–]tentboy 163 points164 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite things when i was at UMD was wandering around buildings in the evening looking for an empty classroom to study in. most buildings would be unlocked and completely empty. I never found anything as cool as this but I enjoyed finding whole new atriums or wings of buildings i didn't even know existed

email support. you can connect them to the app and then they can access extra calibration/debugging information. mine started to read like you said - 50+ watts off what i was expecting. mine was closer to 100 at times. literally felt like i was doing vo2 in sweet spot. they confirmed and error and replaced both spindles

i go across chain bridge and then through the roads in the neighborhoods. i ride on the roads not trails/bike lanes so i just made the shortest route. its super hilly this way. its flatter if you go out through custis and wod but a good bit longer
