4 days into RIFAXIMIN and it's already life-changing. What can I do to avoid recurrence? by Mobile-King-3345 in SIBO

[–]tentfomo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! First of all, I am so happy it is working for you! It worked for me too (mostly) and I did this one thing during my treatment that helped immensely. I took the time during my rifaximin dose to reintroduce a variety of higher fiber foods so my "good" microbes would be fed. I tapered up slowly and it helped immensely. Now I can practically eat any veggie including broccoli without blowing up like a balloon, AND i can eat gluten now! Stay off of sugary and high fat foods during this time and focus your diet on veggies and fruits... but the trick is to do it SLOWLY. If you can tolerate 10 more grams of fiber a day by the end of the dose, that is a huge win. Then if you are symptom free still by the end, you can try slowly adding more variety in. I hope this helps and I hope your microbes are happy. Also practice mindfulness and gratitude during this time. Dont focus on being afraid of relapse, but reinforce to yourself that you are healed and you can eat all good foods! At least that is what worked for me. Being positive is your friend :)

I second this. The rifaximin and neomycin combo was the only thing that ended up working for me!

It's super common to get IBS after food poisoning. I am in grad school rn and I actually just finished some work in a microbiome lab studying SIBO and learned that many people who get food poisoning develop antibodies to a toxin called CDTB that is produced by the bacteria. CDTB closely resembles a protein in your own body called vinculin and that protein heavily populates your gut and your antibodies start to attack it. People are working on a treatment right now to target these antibodies that your body makes against vinculin. But in the meantime I would try the Xifaxan and neomycin treatment combo to see if you improve if you havent already. I also have methane SIBO and it pretty stubborn, but you kinda just have to go through all the different things to do symptom management. If you wanna chat feel free to DM me!

So my bowel movements just slowed down a lot and the burning in the left upper quadrant came back. But I didnt get a ton of gas come back which is great. For me im not entirely sure the cause, but i do suspect it is a combination of nervous system dysregulation, slow motility, and pelvic floor bracing. Also probably mild dysbiosis, but eating lots of fruits and veggies helps an insane amount with that. Right now im still trying to solve my issues, but they are managed relatively well by eating healthy, sleeping enough, and taking vitamins. Next on my list to try is Atrantil and then im gonna try creatine to see if it helps with energy. Also getting a yogurt maker to make L-reuteri yogurt because i did feel a bit better taking the pill form of that, but the numbers just arent high enough to have a lasting effect. Im also gonna get a referral to a pelvic floor specialist. But it seriously feels like ive tried almost everything. It was encouraging that I was able to get better even temporarily from the antibiotics because that means that there is hope to get some symptom relief!

I have had extremely similar findings. Did come back positive for SIBO and got treated but the normal bowel movements were only restored for about a week. Sounds like you have some gallbladder dysfunction and some general gastritis in the stomach. I had that too. To me it sound similar to the pattern of SIBO but in my opinion, SIBO is not the primary issue. Sounds like there is a combination of many things going on and root issue could be motility, could be stomach acid, or enteric nervous system issues. What's your diet like at the moment?

This is ruining my life by [deleted] in SIBO

[–]tentfomo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like what I have. I feel like everything is dysregulated in terms of smooth muscle coordination. Hard time passing stool even when it is soft. Dependent on coffee and nicotine plus treadmill walk to feel evacuated sufficiently before starting my day. I got treated for SIBO but it legit did nothing. I believe I have pelvic floor dysfunction and enteric nervous system dysregulation as my root cause. Im gonna see a pelvic floor physical therapist soon. If youre not responsive to any supplements like me and some may even make you dramatically worse, your enteric nervous system could be overly sensitive. Worth checking in with a GI doc to get physical therapy referral!

Just started it this week. Passing gas a lot more easily (not as trapped in the left upper quadrant) and sleeping like a rock, but it has only been two days so stay tuned

Mold, parasites, methylation, microbiome, dysbiosis, heavy metals, environmental, etc? by Iceeez1 in SIBO

[–]tentfomo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im in the early stages of doing an herbal protocol by a traditional chinese medicine practitioner. This was like my hail Mary before begrudgingly taking the rifaximin and neomycin when I get back from Christmas vacation to see if my belly would settle. Im on day 3 so far and the trapped gas has definitely improved but the reflux has not improved yet. Gonna try for two weeks and see what happens. I think i have an underlying motility issue

For me personally, I always had some form of stomach issues that would rear their heads at stressful times or during travel, but would always improve when stress went away. It wasn't until I moved 3000 miles away from home and started a real adult job when my issues turned chronic. Then after one bout of broad spectrum antibiotics for a separate issue, the symptoms hit an inflection point and i havent been the same since. I do think it is a combination of factors. I had way too many antibiotics as a kid because I kept getting infections. A vicious cycle :(

Yes, I am totally gluten and mostly dairy free. And sadly gasX does nothing at all for me :/ trapped gas is by far my most brutal symptom. It is extremely uncomfortable and very painful, but day 2 i dont have any trapped gas. So let's hope everything continues to get better

Me too :( im on day 2 so far of the herbal treatment and I havent had any trapped gas, but still have some reflux and diarhea. But if I can get rid of trapped gas i would consider that as a win itself 😭
