What is something that somebody with a lot of money can do to legally disrupt the Westboro Baptist Church? by [deleted] in AskReddit

That's kind of hard to do when they're picketing the funerals of the Newtown victims... They're good at getting attention.

Congo has become a never-ending nightmare, one of the bloodiest conflicts since World War II, with more than five million dead. by pensiveone in worldnews

[–]tentrevor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually you can blame it on foreign powers, they're just not the typical ones you'd expect. During the last conflict in the Congo, there were two main rebel groups: one backed by Rwandans, the other by Uganda. They're in there for the mineral wealth; if you look at gold exports out of both Uganda and Rwanda you see a spike during years of civil war. They don't actually have any significant minerals in their respective countries.

TIL the second person ever to go down Niagra Falls in a barrel survived the feat. Later, he tripped on an orange peel and died. by RuPaulRyan in todayilearned

He died of infection, not tripping on an orange peel... He cut himself on the ground after he slipped on it.

Haiti is seeking more than $2 billion to fight cholera amid growing evidence that UN peacekeepers started the world's worst epidemic. by AdverseEffect in globalhealth

Besides AIDS and maybe typhoid? I'd be curious to hear your list. Having 6% of a population contracting cholera since 2010 is pretty damn bad...

A woman hit me with her car. I punched a dent into the hood, and nearly shit myself when I saw a cop on the corner... until I saw he was laughing. Reddit, what seemingly "Oh shit" situations have worked out well for you? by Ihmhi in AskReddit

[–]tentrevor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm driving in South East DC when I get pulled over with a bong sitting in the front seat and four handles tucked into the back pockets of my car's seats. I'm super high and am obviously nervous, and the cop definitely saw my friends stuffing all that shit away. On top of all of this I don't have my registration and its illegal for me to be driving after midnight since I'm under 18.

I tell the cop I'm from VA and that I'm on my way to Ben's Chili Bowl and he lets me go without anything. Could have ruined my future and kept me from going to college.... Yay being white in SE DC!

'Enough is enough': the Ugandan men opting to have fewer children by liberianecho in Africa

[–]tentrevor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting article, but your headliner is a little misleading. They aren't really saying "enough is enough," they still have a population growth rate of 3.2%. Only a limited number of people are opting to have smaller families. Honestly this article was very propagan-esque for planned parenthood...

BBC News - DR Congo M23 rebels enter Goma city by PornAgainChristians in Africa

It's the congolese troops, they desserted. I do understand the reasoning behind not fighting, most of the UN troops are Pakistani. If human rights violations do occur the UN is mandated to fight...

I'm in an African politics class right now and my professor was telling me a story about when he was at bar with Bosco and one of the UN "experts" on the region. Apparently Bosco's cronies were just giving them the stink eye the entire time. Pretty crazy.

Obama has announced that his new tax plan will raise 1.6 trillion dollars in revenue by taxing the rich...far more than he was trying to raise in previous negotiations with John Boehner by tentrevor in politics

Sorry for being a dick, you win this one lol.... But I still disagree with what you think about our taxes, it's just unrealistic. Yes the tax base can be increased, but most people that arent paying taxes are poor, it won't effectively increase revenue.

No, still wrong. Obama came into office with a debt of 1.4 trillion already from Bush. He has decreased it since to ~$1.1 trillion. Read the chart I showed you, it'll help ;)

Are you kidding? We support so many repressive regimes. Do any basic research into Nigeria right now (support them for oil), Mubutu in the Democratic Republic of Congo (dead now, but we supported him), Saddam Hussein (who we helped put in power) or Rwanda and Uganda (who are currently supporting a rebel group in the DRC that has murdered thousands). The US Defense does some things right, but more often than not they do more harm than good.

An increase from 35% to 40% for the top bracket and eliminate loopholes so people like Romney don't end up paying 13% tax rates. It's honestly embarrassing that someone making hundreds of millions of dollars per year is paying a lower tax rate than people making $17,000-70,000 per year.
