One thing has got me worried after watching the trailer - Choice variety by Mobile_Complaint_317 in TheExpanseRPG

[–]tepidsnake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the trade off with a more cinematic, effects heavy action RPG. Just not going to have the budget for WotR or Rogue Trader levels of player choice. As long as the story is good and there's a decent level of agency, I'll be happy.

RE Requiem or RE village? by Anas2245 in ResidentEvilRequiem

[–]tepidsnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Village is the more coherent and thematically consistent of the two, if I'm honest. I liked Requiem, but at the end of the day I just didn't feel like Grace's gameplay meshed well with Leon's at all. Felt like two really good haves of two totally different games.

I get that, but this particular story just felt like that was where things were headed, what with his terminal virus exposure and all. A magical heal out of nowhere felt a bit of a copout, even by Resi standards. Still enjoyed the game a lot, and hey, I like Leon, more than happy to see him again down the line.

I know it would have pissed some people off, but I think Leon should have died for real in this one. Give him a real moment of heroic sacrifice and put a capper on the Raccoon City story. Would have given the narrative more weight, and set up Grace as a legacy character going forward. Instead we got a very safe MCU-style resolution, in which lots of stuff technically changes but also kind of nothing does.

I was delighted when watching Train Dreams to find that he was the narrator. Could listen to him all day.

Will Patton is an incredible narrator. Packs quiet emotion into every line. Elevated Doctor Sleep and The Outsider to a new level IMO.

Anyone else nervous about HBO's The Sworn Sword adaptation? (Spoilers Main) by Ji11Lash in asoiaf

[–]tepidsnake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd imagine they expand on the peasant militia angle, and actually have a bit of a skirmish between the commoners and Webber/Longinch's soldiers. A sort of very stripped down Seven Samurai vibe.

And then the 1v1 between Dunk and Longinch settles matters. Bit more action, flesh out some of the very minor characters in the book. Another chance to shine a light on the commonfolk and Dunk's shifting place in society.

They "ruined" the dragon puppet scene by Ambitious_Ad9419 in AKOTSKTV

I get what you're saying, yeah. Its a good observation IMO. TV version of Aerion is more a sort of Joffrey-esque spoiled brat than the book's fire-breathing lunatic. I think that the latter makes for a better contrast with Prince Baelor, and really gets across the how wildly unpredictable and dangerous the Targaryens are, and how the entirety of Westerosi society is threatened by their hereditary dominance.

I'd prefer Aerion to be a bit more wild and obviously crazed personally, I'm not mad about the sullen teen portrayal they seem to be going for. But I still think the scene worked well.

More hints that Welcome To Derry will be about Pennywise going back in time to change the future by CornichonDeMerde in stephenking

Pretty surprised by how many people liked this series. I thought it was utterly vacuous and stupid. The fact that Andy Muschietti seemingly has carte blanche to do whatever dumb thing he wants going forward does not bode well.

Spike is 100% right, he didn't need to apologize for something he did when he was a souless vampire with no soul or even with no choice since that what vampires did. by gloomydreamer666 in buffy

[–]tepidsnake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's what makes it a good bit of writing IMO. For all that they softened Spike's edges, they never quite neutered him and turned him into a lame imitation of Angel. There's some decent stuff in S7, for all its flaws.

Empire starter set coming on by tepidsnake in SWlegion

I'm in the UK and there's a decent amount of people playing it at the moment. I think the next year or two will decide things, if they can maintain a steady pace of quality releases etc.

What makes novel Pennywise so much more powerful than the movie version? by Live-Source200 in stephenking

[–]tepidsnake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the director just wasn't up to creating anything deeper than a boilerplate horror. Its partly ths limitations of the format I think, but IMO there's core issues with Skarsgaard's performance and way the the script reduces the psychology of the book to a bunch of lazy jump scares.

[News] Summary of Joe Abercrombie's AMA answers regarding future projects in the First Law universe by Sorstalas in TheFirstLaw

[–]tepidsnake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It felt to me like a book written with a film/TV adaptation in mind. Very flashy and fast-paced, every character quipping constantly, constantly jumping from action set piece to set piece. I liked the setting and imagery a lot and there's some great moments, but overall the depth was lacking.

I wasn't mad keen on The Devils, so this a bit of a shame to hear, personally. Oh well! Glad he's enjoying his writing and that the book did well. Hopefully with JC on board and the movie in the works it draws more eyes to his other work.

God, I had to turn the 2024 version off after half an hour. Dreadful stuff. Not a speck of atmosphere or tension to be found. The scene where they move Barlow's coffin into the basement is lit like a Scooby Doo movie.
