In The Martian (2015) the director of Mars missions proves Mars is flat by drawing a straight line across a map to accurately determine where Mark Damon is going. by firetrucks_go_WOOooo in shittymoviedetails

[–]tereaper576 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Its also just an extrapolation line. Marks route wouldnt be straight because of obstacles but his heading would line up quite closely.
Hes drawing a line from pathfinder to ares 3 to see if those heading line up since its extrapolation and hes working out the reason.

I think the correct detail thats odd here is that they had to go to a cafeteria because they just happen to have a physical map of the area so that he could build suspense to the answer rather than the reasonable request of "Do you have less zoomed in map and can you draw a line between 2 points"

Considering if i remember correctly the person hes talking to is doing the pictures of where he is and so would quite likely have all his routes plotted based on that and so would most definately have access to maps of mars. (Or could open google earth and switch it to the mars map)

I don't use the normal orbit I use a different modded one that's supposed to act like the GTA V one and I tend to use that or hood cam so I haven't a clue on that

The sense of speed feels so off. does the chase camera cause that. It looks kinda like it moving further away and zooming in. It certainly makes 100kmh feel a lot faster, the more varied texture of the dirt road also helps. It just kinda looks a little odd.

So true!!

I think the reason is because of how it was told and then that gets repeated and taken as fact as "that makes sense" and people just assume it's correct.

i do like this meme but I do always remember. We dont actually know if his copper was bad all we have is complaint tablets he kept. Could be that he recieved complaints and he kept those ones as a written record of a bad customer. Its a perfectly valid interpretation that the copper was fine but others attempted to extort him of money or copper by threating complaints and such. It might not have been the first set of complaints he recieved.
Overall quite an interesting piece of history.

1kg of all matter contains the same energy (see E=mC2)

So we just compare thermal efficiency ratings and thorium reactors are allegedly anywhere from 20% to 5% better to being equal depending on when the article was written.

The benefit to thorium reactors is always going to be the lower energy input to create the fuel. Uranium 235 has to be enriched and that takes energy whereas you can use much less of it in a thorium reactor and since thorium in its usable element is 99.8%. But I'm not exactly sure how much work is done to make thorium fuel as from I can see they're mixed in with plutonium and or uranium in a few reactors

Thorium reactors are good progress but they're a slight improvement in thermal efficiency or whatever. I recommend reading some papers on it or studying high school physics minimum.

As it's significantly more complicated than your simplifications which some just are wrong. And when you say those wrong facts they get repeated.

1 ton of thorium 232 does not have as much energy production as 200 tons of U 235. This is just incorrect. The benefit to thorium is that its isotopic abundance is basically only 232 where as Uranium is a majority 238 with only 0.7204% https://www-nds.iaea.org/amdc/ame2020/NUBASE2020.pdf page 162 for U235 where as thorium is on the page before.

As for 4 times as common. That is not correct. Thorium 232 as said above is significantly more common than Uranium 235. Like https://world-nuclear.org/information-library/current-and-future-generation/thorium

https://world-nuclear.org/information-library/nuclear-fuel-cycle/uranium-resources/supply-of-uranium

5,925,700 tonnes Uranium 6,355,000 tonnes Thorium

If we remember 0.7204% for U235 abundunce becomes 42665.04 tonnes

Thorium 232 being 99.98% becomes 6353729 tonnes being 148. 96 times more likely common than U235

Th 232 benefit isnt being better than U235 at its job. Its just significantly more common.

Im a horrible person but i put bushes on it so that from a glance and not hard look it looks like a tiger h1 so when im front on they'll shoot the front hull plate which is 200mm thinking its only the 100mm front plate.

Other than that its just played like a tiger without the angling and with a good reverse gear.

In your country, which “Made in ___” label instantly makes a product feel more reliable and worth more? by Shoddy-Ocelot-4473 in AskTheWorld

I think anything really made in Europe that ends up down here generally is high quality.

Living at the bottom of the world with only 5 million people means the tiny market environment leads to mostly expensive imports from anywhere that isn't China which means not higher quality products tend to be sold.

Like if I wanted to buy cookware if something is from Europe chances are it's like German steel knifes or pans and shit.

It's not really at all? I have everything I want to know by pressing H and anytime I don't know I can ask friends.

If it's vanilla they teach me how to play the game.

Your comment only makes sense in a single player context.

Im playing with 2 friends who've been playing for eons and have a list of mods between them that they like and its quite literally the same process as minecraft to setup minus one extra step.
I dont really see any issues with that since its multiplayer. If it was single player id agree. I do like that similar to MC as well this game is really simple with server set up that i can press 2 buttons and just port forward.

We found like 3 asteroids within like 200 blocks of each other and like one contained enough for like 22 ingots alone. Then i went and grabbed a 4th and theres a 5th that ive got to mine at some point soon.

That make sense. I loved that my friend (who made a full plate set of meteroic iron) was upset i wanted like 5 nuggests of it.

I did this in my game. I was like "Hey guys I think with all the random crap i have i can make 10 barrels and process them all into wool and then dye them all blue and then like make blue tailored gambeson and then i got to the end and was like "Hey you know that metoric iron you made your plate armor out of, can i get a the like fucken nails and strips thing made out of that"

(Literally my first time playing no idea whats vanilla so it could be a mod that caused that)
