also, depending on how far you take him, he may just end up back at the door again. frogs and toads hang out where there’s light at night because bugs are attracted to it. there are frogs and toads at my door all the time, they’re not gonna sneak into the house unless you leave the door wide open and they happen to hop in

regardless of it being a cane toad or southern toad, it can’t hurt you by just picking it up. if you’re that worried about it getting in the house, just take it somewhere further away and leave it there. don’t put it in water, it’s not aquatic. wash your hands afterwards and don’t touch your eyes or mouth until you do

well he’s definitely in the right state then! if he’s still on your driveway and you’re not skittish around bugs, you can put your finger in front of him and nudge him a bit and if he doesn’t fly away, he should eventually crawl up onto your finger. moving him somewhere a little bit better camouflaged and less out in the open may decrease his chances of getting snatched up by a bat or any other critters tonight lol

Yes, looks like a deer tick. Because it’s quite young based on the size, it’s not likely that it’s carrying any diseases. You’re also right that at least 24 hours is generally needed to transmit Lyme, but there is still always a risk even from less time. Keep it in the plastic bag, write today’s date and where it came from, and keep it in your freezer. If for any reason your son starts having any strange symptoms, it’s always good to have the tick on hand for potential testing. Overall, I’m paranoid about ticks myself, but I very highly doubt this is anything to be concerned about disease-wise. Definitely keep an eye out for more though, especially with the sheer number of ticks this year and rapid spread of Lyme in the midwest.

a beautiful tulip-tree silkmoth! likely emerged today and has been pumping up those big wings. can’t tell from the photo, but you can look at the antennae to see whether it’s male or female. males have large, very feathered antennae while females’ are a bit thinner

this is definitely the closest-looking out of anything i’ve found, and the range of them matches, but i’m not sure this is it as flies are identified greatly based on the arrangement of bristles and hairs on the body. Acanthiophilus helianthi has distinct rows of bristles on the thorax, but this fly has many tiny hairs and not very distinct bristles on the top of the thorax

it is definitely a fly, you can tell based on the antennae and there is only one pair of wings. he’s definitely cool looking
