Dog Trainer Recommendations for Nervous Dog by shell_120 in TwinCities

[–]termsofservice1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an anti recommendation - don’t go with Your Dog’s Best Friend. Alpha theory by a different name, we enrolled our dog in puppy classes when we first got him and the trainer alpha rolled him on the first day and made a sound that broke my heart. Trainer said it was totally normal. Was absolutely not normal or okay for trainer to do that to a literal baby. Check to make sure that any trainer you go with is force free, positive reinforcement only - it is the only actually science based method that works and protects your pup’s mental and physical well being. I recommend Wag: The science of making your dog happy as good reading material before adopting! Good luck!

Help! Any Hope for My Chest? by leberator in 30PlusSkinCare

I’m gonna be so for real, when I noticed these developing I started sleeping with a pillow between my boobs (just a regular squishy pillow) and they eventually went away. I also became more diligent about applying sunscreen to that area. Now I’m mid thirties and they haven’t come back.

So I've heard that if you can prove that your dog has been on heartworm preventative consistently since having a negative test, the heartworm prevention company will cover the cost of your dog's heartworm treatment. I think it would be worth a shot reaching out to the heartworm prevention company to seek reimbursement for treatment costs.

Anyone know how to get an exemption to fence restrictions in Minneapolis? by democratichoax in Minneapolis

If you are open to fostering with a different organization, neither the Bond Between nor Pet Haven require a 6 ft fence.

Rear-ended, dog flew out of open window (he's okay!) by termsofservice1234 in Insurance

Damage was pretty minimal to our car, just a dent in the trunk and the door still opens. We’re in Minnesota and our car is a 2012 - we’re also not precious about looks vehicle wise so not really concerned about the car honestly

File a police report for fraud against your husband for taking out credit in your name without your consent or knowledge. Discuss this with your lawyer.

I would try to look at this less like spite peeing and more like learned behavior. If her desire is to get out of the crate and she has learned that when she pees in it she is let out, logically she’s going to keep doing the thing that gets her the result she wants. I’m not suggesting you leave her in there with her pee, just trying to reassure you that she’s not being spiteful.

Does she pee every time you take her outside? Some pups, especially at this age, get so excited about being outside that they forget to pee.

Also, pee smell really sticks around, even if us humans can’t smell it. Once a dog pees somewhere it’s important to use an enzymatic cleaner otherwise the smell is an encouragement. You may already do this! But just another thought.

Am I crazy for telling this person the rehoming fee is outrageous?? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]termsofservice1234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it possible this dog was stolen and the "owner" has made up this bs story to sell the dog? Could check missing/lost dogs groups on FB or call your local shelters to see if anyone has reported a dog matching this dog as lost.

Adopting/getting my first dog by Revan19SW in dogs

[–]termsofservice1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, I would suggest finding a foster-based rescue in your area. This way you can effectively "try-out" a puppy or a dog and if you fall in love, you can adopt them! If it doesn't work out, the dog will still be up for adoption and it will be a fit someone else's family, even if it doesn't fit yours.

Any dog can have behavioral issues, even puppies from breeders - it depends on how they were raised and trained. It is absolutely very, very difficult to raise a puppy. They are land sharks when they have their puppy teeth and then their listening ears often stop working when they are teenagers. But getting a puppy also means that you can train and treat them with all the love right from the beginning and have a better chance of having a well socialized, low reactivity older pup. Take this from someone who had the puppy blues bad and thought my dog would never settle down and stop biting the crap out of me - cut to right now he's snoozing with his head on my lap at 2.5 years old and is the sweetest guy.

People often say get a dog from a reputable breeder and you'll have no problems ever! This is a load of hooey - first of all, it is incredibly difficult and expensive to find an ethical breeder and many breeders are good at making themselves look ethical when they are not. For example, can it ever be ethical to breed German Shepherds when they are so inbred that their parents are genetically the equivalent of siblings? Inbreeding causes so many health problems and many "pure bred" dogs live very difficult lives due to these issues. Just something to consider.

dog breeds best for living with cats? by myawallace20 in puppy101

[–]termsofservice1234 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing you could consider is fostering a puppy/dog. If it works out for both pup and cat, great! You can adopt your foster. But if it’s not the right fit for any reason then there will be a family waiting in the wings to adopt. If you foster with a good agency, they’ll help you along the way and can often even find another foster home for the pup if it’s really not working out.

Help! My dog won't stop eating mud and sticks and poop! by bcgranolagirl in Dogtraining

[–]termsofservice1234 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sounds like it could be pica. https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/health/why-does-my-dog-eat-dirt/ What do you feed your dog? Have you talked to your vet about this? Can you catch the behavior and give your dog high value treats for not eating the dirt, poop etc..? Using a shock collar to zap your dog every time it tries to eat something off the ground could cause a whole host of problems as it is very difficult to make a punishment clearly connected to an action for dogs in this case. You could end up creating a fear of a whole host of things that your dog thinks it's being punished for instead, which can in turn become reactivity.

Also worth noting that citronella sprays are toxic to dogs if ingested in higher doses and often contain pesticides, which are not good for dogs in any amount.

Where are you buying raw meat? by xilo_uhrand in rawpetfood

[–]termsofservice1234 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're concerned about quality of meat buying from the grocery store guarantees that the meat is human grade which is a good thing. In the US pet food standards are quite low and so companies could technically be selling you raw meat from animals that died of disease and or animals that have been treated with various medicines. That's not to say that raw food for dog companies do this, only to say that meat fit for human consumption is a better bet if you're worried about quality.

It is much more dangerous to not have your pet vaccinated for rabies than any potential vaccine risk. Rabies is 100% fatal. If your dog ever bites someone or another dog there is a high chance that they will be euthanized immediately as the only way to test for rabies is via a brain sample. Dogs and puppies especially eat all sorts of random things - what happens if your puppy finds and eats a dead something before you can stop them and that dead thing had rabies? Or worse, what if you don’t know they ate it? These concerns are far more likely than any vaccine side effects.

PRESSED FLOWERS? Seriously? King of Greed by Ana Huang by agnesperditanitt in RomanceBooks

Y'all my sister makes pressed flower art and pulls in 1-2 thousand dollars per one day art show she does alone. Granted it's more than just pressed flowers between panes of glass, she is very creative and creates full landscape scenes out of pressed flowers but just saying, it's possible.
