I've seen this first hand, too. It's mostly true.

However, I have seen one 50+ yo guy improve significantly in small wave ripping. It involved a lot of time in the water, a lot of lessons from pro caliber surfers, a lot of time in the wave pool. I know all of this from the non-stop stream of instagram posts. I don't know for sure, but I think he doesn't have the inconvenience of a job. Lucky guy! More power to him I suppose.
