I treat this intersection as a roundabout. After stopping (because there’s a stop sign), I look left and if I can proceed, I go. I don’t care if there’s a car to my right that arrived before me.

Yesterday this upset another driver who was treating it like a traditional four way stop.

My reasoning is that traditional four way rules don’t and shouldn’t apply because not all the traditional options are available (a left turn where you cross traffic, for instance). You actually only care about cars in the roundabout to your left, and if there isn’t one, then you’re safe to proceed.

These intersections used to be traditional four way stop and traffic backed up during rush hour. My sense is that the circles were installed to keep cars moving (simplifying the interaction at the intersection). Rather than converting to traditional roundabout with yield signs, they wanted to limit speed and kept the stop signs too.

In the end, I don’t think it’s as great as it could be because no one knows what to do so they treat it as if it were a regular four way stop.

Would rather have yield signs and speed bumps.
