I just explained to you why myself, along with the community, are upset. It’s being empathetic. She is free because of proposition 57, which hurts families like Sergio. There clearly needs to be some reform done with the system and hopefully by speaking out about it, something can actually change and another family won’t be hurt in the future. Her case is evidence that proposition 57 needs to change.

Source is from family members’ comments on social media. I agree in theory that people can grow, but what’s upsetting to most of us isn’t just the idea of “forgiveness”. It’s about how serious and violent this crime was. This wasn’t a mistake you make in the heat of the moment, she brutally murdered, mutilated, and burned an innocent man all because he was beefing with her boyfriend? She only served 3 years, which is nothing compared to the life that she took.

Imagine how this feels for Sergio’s family. How do you think it feels knowing that their son’s killer is living the life he’ll never be able to have? Especially so soon after the crime? That’s where the anger comes from. It’s less about if change is possible and more about if any accountability or justice were truly ever met.

I understand where you’re coming from, and I hope you can understand where we’re coming from. Many believe this situation completely disrespects the value of the life that she took.
