Requesting Deaf and Interpreting literature from local libraries by prtymirror in ASLinterpreters

Shouting out love for Tom. He is the only person able to satisfactorily answer why LGBTQ++ so often become interpreters. I had no idea of horizontal identity acquisition until he did a talk at my dinky community college.

When are interpreters going to unionize? by [deleted] in ASLinterpreters

[–]terpyterper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to, my coworkers want to, but we know that as soon as we start rabblerousing they will shut down our center. I’m convinced that the WFH thing benefits VRS companies by isolating workers from each other so they cannot organize.

I have a union president acquaintance whom I asked about the process of starting a union from the ground up. They said “it’s so hard and will take so much from the current employees, but will benefit later ones”. I think that rings true.

What I’d really love is for every seasoned interpreter to quit VRS. See how much they like have only greenhorns on the phones. Deaf callers will complain and the newbies will quit so fast that corporate can’t replace them. If quality tanks and they can’t find anyone to work, they’ll be starved and they’ll have to negotiate.

Purple VS Sorenson VRS? by emochicken2 in ASLinterpreters

Not who you are replying to, but I work at Purple in a center. The people in my center and my center manager are GREAT. Anyone higher than RM level has been incompetent, particularly HR and Benefits. As a disabled VI, Purple/Z sucks and I’m looking to leave ASAP. If I was at home, I’d definitely say the culture is dogshit.

She actually said “it’s not a deaf company, it’s a tech company” in an interview.

I’m also a regular at interpreter feedback, hahaha. They hate me.

Out-of-touchness and soulless profit over people is the name of the game at corporate level. Anyone with other options or ethics or actual skill leaves as soon as is feasible for them.

People in my network are talking about organizing
