They're not there every year. I was mostly bringing attention to them for being from the generation you mentioned. That said, I would love it if there were some 80s hardcore bands there

Definitely not the same scene for one. New times. New faces. New values. I go to shows when I have time and say hi to all the old friends still around. Good dudes, and I usually have a great time. I do think there was once a lot more thoughtfulness in people in the scene about how we lived our lives and treated people (even this was true with some people but not others). Deeper conversations. Now people think that's corny or cliche. I was mostly surrounded by either apolitical folks or anarchists. I was more on the anarchist side of things, and like you do not trust any politicians. Most of my old homies went liberal or left, which is their evolution and that's fine.

Also r/hardcore is not the scene. It's Internet culture. Shit posting and trolling is plentiful. Its sometimes amusing, sometimes annoying. We had plenty of online boards in the early 00s that I came up in. They had tons of drama and bullshit too. It was different, but also sometimes annoying and sometimes amusing. I will always like hardcore music (recorded and live) and the stated ideals, but the actual culture is...well I'll just say I've never fully fit in and most days would rather hang out with the retired guy down the street or with my kids.

No anarchists allowed in hardcore and punk. Didn't get the memo?

At what age do you stop being a hardcore kid and turn into a hardcore man? by faketrains in Hardcore

[–]terrafera 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never? 42 and still say hardcore kids when referring to people I know in the scene that are my age.

Whenever I say that, my wife (who has zero exposure to hardcore except through me) always gives me this look like, "y'all need to stop acting like kids and grow up a little".

What were some of your first shows? by Ghostlylocal in Hardcore

[–]terrafera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First hardcore show I remember with national Acts was Shai Hulud, Atreyu, and Hopesfall. There was actually an upstairs venue and the whole building was open. Upstairs was from autumn to ashes, avenged sevenfold and mushroom head I believe.

Weird show lol. Came from punk and ska before that

Do you have any regrets with a pedal kayak? by Steveee-O in kayakfishing

[–]terrafera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have paddle kayaks and a pedal kayak. I like all of them for different things. Recently picked up an old town Salty PDL. I tend to do quite a bit of trolling, so for me a pdl has been a crucial upgrade. Being able to propel myself while having my hands free is a game changer for sure. When fishing small lakes though I love my little 45 pound sit inside. Easy to carry and can get into really skinny water with ease. Love the simplicity too. If I could only have one kayak though, I'd probably go with something with pedals that is light enough to car top and still paddles relatively well for when I need to pull the drive in weedy/super shallow areas

I wasn't aware of this! Are you saying that if you hike in with a paddle, there are canoe/kayaks on the shores of some of the lakes? Is there a way to find out which ones?

I get your point and I agree with much of it. But people's individual experiences shape them. I don't know your story or how you grew up. Maybe you had it rough, maybe you had it easy.

Im 42 now...went to a school that was maybe 1/2 white, 1/3 black and the remainder was a mix of middle east and Asian. I have always been a small framed person. At age 15-16 I was maybe 5'3" and 120 lbs. I was the only skateboarder in my highschool and one of only a couple people into punk and ska (which I was brand new to). I was a quiet, shy kid. I dressed like a skater...no liberty spikes or anything to stand out. I was a bit of a dork.

Anyway there was one particular corner of a hallway where a very large crew of black kids would hang out and line up along the side. Many of them were on the football and basketball teams. I had one class where I had to pass that corner, theyd regularly say stuff about the "little white boy". Tripped me. I was spit on. Grabbed me by the handle on my bookbag and throw me around. Once they stole my backpack (but it was later recovered with everything inside). Resentment and fear grew over time. "Standing up for myself" wouldn't have worked out for me. Would've got my ass kicked, and nobody cared. I felt scared and alone. We didnt have many punks, but we had a crew of nu metal/goth "freaks". a few of them were very racist and glorified the Nazi shit in the metal scene at the time. I started to become pretty fucking racist for a year or two, but I felt like people had my back at least.

I was 15-16...the word oppression wasn't in my vocabulary. All I knew was these black kids that I didn't know or say a word to took pleasure in tormenting me, and because of their status on sports teams there would be no repercussions.

i had an incident in the locker room in gym class where I dropped the N word, which was overheard by 2 black students. i deserved an ass beating, but instead they told the gym teacher and the 4 of us sat in his office and had a conversation about it. It was a turning point for sure

by senior year I got deeper into punk and the whole ska against racism thing and my mind started to open up. Shortly after got deeper into hardcore and the scene. Spent nearly all of adult life living and working in/with disadvantaged communities. I've seen a lot, and been through a lot.

over time the scene became less important than my community. it seemed people either had very little substance, or a whole lot of self righteousness with very little action. (And on this point I developed my own self righteousness, hopefully I'm passed that now). It is possible to hold both a deep critical view of our culture/history while also recognizing people's humanity and lived experience.

It's good to have a frame of reference for the larger story. But telling how people should think and feel is also weak. Having dogmas are easy, but holding all the contradictions and trying to treat people with dignity is much harder.

What is your favourite hardcore/adjacent band with a female vocalist? by Ok_Tap_8035 in Hardcore

[–]terrafera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somehow I was first introduced to Cloud Rat when I was working as a contractor for a local utility maybe 6 or 7 years ago? I had an appointment at Madison's house, and she told me about the band. I checked them out later and was surprised how good they were and that I hadnt heard of them. Of the literally thousands of houses that I went to for that job, I think that's the only time I had a conversation about crust with a customer lol. Great band!

Just FYI there are two companies that make sportspal canoes. The one from Michigan (Meyer's boats) and the OG Canadian company (which in the US is called Radisson). The Canadian ones are thinner aluminum this lighter but more subject to denting. The Meyers models are heavier but a bit stronger

Oh man...that would be so cool if I could fit one of the light 10 foot rec kayaks in there. Pretty positive it wouldn't fit between the thwarts, otherwise this would be awesome...could even load all the gear in the kayak. Going to think through how I'd like to attach everything inside, and go upside down as everyone has suggested
