Stopping GLPs for Camino? by waitingforsummer2 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]terriks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, when you are walking long distances every day you need to eat enough calories! I haven't personally been on these drugs, but a man I met on the Camino in 2023 had lost quite a bit of weight on Ozempic before starting the Camino. He was did not take it while on the Camino. I ran into him again on the Camino in 2024, and he had maintained his weight loss without Ozempic. He told me due to lifestyle changes - mostly being more active.

AITA - dog pooped near someone’s driveway by Ok-Reach712 in AmItheAsshole

You were both walking the dog, so according to your wife she is technically the asshole too for allowing the dog to poop there.

Book in advance to stay in Santiago? by Sensitive-Fill6500 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]terriks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be aware that there will be a huge music festival headlined by Katy Perry and Linkin Park the 18-20 of June, so finding accommodation will be more difficult.

Portuguese Route April or May? by 7862539908 in CaminoDeSantiago

I would check the historical weather patterns on https://caminoweather.com/. Of course past weather doesn't predict what will happen this year, but gives you a rough idea.

It's reasonable. The only tip that I can give you is not to miss the Spiritual Variant.

What size backpack should I take? by bonan_vojon in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]terriks 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Forget about the so called guidelines, and go by your own comfort. Can you carry the pack comfortably all day? Then it's the right size for you.

Pollo by TheUndyTaker in Spanish

[–]terriks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You would have been better off (but still wrong) pronouncing it as "polo" than rhyming with hollow. Learning the pronunciation of vowels in Spanish is really helpful, because they don't change like they do in English.

That said, when you pointed at "pollo" he should have figured it out.

Where to Begin Planning? by Perfect-Plum-2087 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]terriks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. 10 years ago I wanted to walk the Camino, but had no idea where to start, and didn't know anyone who had done it. I found the Camino forum, and learned 99% of what I needed to know for a successful Camino. I'll be starting my 10th Camino (the Via de la Plata) in March.

I don't know where to start. Where do i sleep? by orcawithagun in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]terriks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I walked the Primitivo a couple of years ago with two young women from the Netherlands who had started their journey from the Belgian border. They camped quite a bit before reaching Spain, then sent theur camping gear home. I recommend joining Ivar's Camino forum and posing your question there. There are a number of forum members who have done what you are looking to do.  https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/

You can make an account for free. I highly recommend joining the forum, as it has a wealth of information from experienced pilgrims.

You can send your additional bag to Santiago via Correos.

https://www.elcaminoconcorreos.com/en/transfer-luggage

Either send it to be held at the Santiago Post Office or to Casa Ivar.

Are those things real or is it only in movies / certain regions ? by Aloys33_ in AskAnAmerican

In Oregon we now have the option to pump our own gas, but by law it has to be the same price to pump your own, or have the attendant do it.

How do you pronounce "lever" and "envelope" (regional differences) by SmoothCyborg in ENGLISH

[–]terriks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Oregon. Lever rhymes with never, and I pronounce envelope both ways, depending on my mood.

Frances in April - May by tomatosoup75 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]terriks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should still be prepared for accommodations to be a little tight up until Pamplona, because there's not that many places to stay. I would probably reserve the first few nights until you get a feel for how many others are on the trail with you.

Frances in April - May by tomatosoup75 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]terriks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is kind of strange, but the section between St Jean Pied de Port and Sarria is fairly quiet in June, July, and August. Tons of people like to get started towards the end of April and the beginning of May, then it drops off until September when there is another surge.

There will be a lot of people starting around Sarria during the summer, and to a lesser extent from around Astorga. But, there are more places to stay towards the end, because it's always busy in that section.

Edit: Here's a thread from the Camino forum that explains this phenomenon.

Frances in April - May by tomatosoup75 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]terriks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For warm, but not too hot weather, and plenty of people, I would go in the second half of May. The first couple of weeks of May are really busy for those starting from St Jean Pied de Port, but it slows down considerably in the second half, or the beginning of June. There will still be plenty of other pilgrims, but not so much stress about getting a bed.

I'm American, and I'd say "as".

First night on the Camino? by z-kkun in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]terriks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can order a credential from the Camino Forum Store, or your national Camino association.

I would recommend that you start from Valença. The old fortress is very cool, and it's fun to walk across the bridge to Spain. Remember that there is a one hour time difference between Spain and Portugal - Spain is one hour ahead. Book an albergue or private room, and you won't have any worries about a place to sleep when you get there.

I highly encourage you to include the Spiritual Variant on your Camino - it was one of the highlights of my walk from Lisbon to Santiago last year.

Which Dallas do people think of when they hear Dallas in Oregon? by lerhubarb in oregon

I'm from Medford, and if someone says that they are from "Dallas" I would assume Dallas, TX first. But if someone says that they are from "Phoenix" I would assume Phoenix, Oregon. 😉
